Wacken Open Air

I'd love to forge there's just one slight hitch' date=' my vision impairment, it's pretty bad meaning really I would only be able to attend if I could convince a couple of people to go with me and that's pretty unlikely even with my amazing powers of persuasion, and they are amazing, when you can convince someone who hates the AFL team you support to give up their Sunday in order to attend one of that teams home games that's pretty incredible[/quote'] How much help do you need getting around? I think that they can assist with those kinds of things at airports, and everywhere you go you can take a cab or a train. I would imagine that you might need help reading signs, but most metalheads would probably be willing to help you in that circumstance.

since I wouldn't be able to take my guide dog (if I did he'd be quarantined for a month or more) I'd need a heap of assistance firstly with boarding and exiting the plane, then getting through the airport, locating taxis (trains would be out of the question) and being a very unfamiliar place I'd need assistance actually getting around on foot, honestly as badly as I would love to hit up Wacken and HellFest it's not practical unless I can get a few mates to come along, if we get a few more Aussies coming here maybe I can organise a group to head over there or something

Well I might next year with some friends. I'll meet ya there and help you out if ya need it buddy. It is like Mecca for Metal heads, everyone should go once.

I understand why you'd want a group of mates there but all are catered for and looked after. Everytime I go there I always meet awesome people, its an amazing community and we all look out for one and other. On another note, this years line up is not as good as maybe some other fests ie Hellfest looks spectacular!, but c'mon! RAMMSTEIN on German soil.... think I may weep!\m/

You're talking several thousand dollars to get there and that's just airfare and sleeping accommodations, not car, gas, food nor ticket/merch prices. I think the only way I'd ever be able to go would be if NTNR magically got big enough to play there.

I did 3 Wackens -2010, 2011 and 2012. FOr this year I had no money and tickets were sold out waaaay too early. But it was wonderful and crazy:) Last year tough was the best. It was raining a lot, it was cold and we were all preeeetty unprepared for it! We had nylon bags on our feet and there was so much mud that walking was damn hard! I am a huge Gamma Ray fan, and since they're not a big headline on Wacken, they played at noon. While everyone was sleeping and the new rain has destroyed the organisator's efforts to make the ground stable, I had the most difficult walk in my life but I managed to reach the stage and they opened with Dethrone Tyranny, It was one of the best concert feelings ever!

Just found this forum and it is my first post but just had to get into this discussion and tell you have awesome people are at Wacken! Been there for 4 times in a row and I am going this year also. But my point is: I once saw a guy going through the crow and telling everyone his mate was comming through and he would love us to help or just move a bit. Everyone did and a few seconds later some guys carrying a guy in a wheelchair came through the crow!! They needed to carry him up where he could see the show in a wheelchair. How awesome is that!!!! There is place for everyone in Wacken, and everyone should go!

I've been in Wacken twice, 2011 and 2012, and I love it! Even the last year with all the mud, I had a very good time. The problem was that It was raining for one month without stopping, so when we arrived there and it started to rain again, the mud was everywhere, and it was deep and so slippery! But funny, because there are always people who like to swim naked and drunk on the mud, that is a great show hehehe. Wacken is the perfect holiday of a metalhead because of the heavy metal atmosphere, that involves everywhere and everybody in the town. The food is great and cheap, and there are a lot of different kinds. But to taste viking food, or to see an entire pig rolling on the skewer while roasting, is necessary to go to Wackinger Village. The stalls have amazing things, as well as the ones in the Metal Market. And the sound of the concerts is great. I will go next year, because is the 25 anniversary. And for those people who think than Wacken is not affordable at all, I think it depends of many things, but I didn't spend so much money when I went and thinking about all the things that Wacken offers, is worth going once in your lifetime!

I will never forget that. I thought I had lost the thrill of Wacken, it turned out that mud made it come back. I might go next year as well, since I'm skipping this one. As far as affordable-it's a big financial shock for me, and thanks god we first pay the tickets, then the travel, and then what we need there. If it all happened in one month it would be impossible. But yet you are from London and I am from Bulgaria which explains why food seems so cheap to you :P And yet I spend all my money on concerts, travels or festivals, so I think every cent is worth it:)

I'm from Spain, I am living in London ;). To me the food in Wacken is cheaper than in Hellfest. But I don't know more Europe festivals, I only know some in Spain, and of course, the food there is the cheapest! and the best!! hahahaha. But yes, your are totally right, Wacken is really expensive, and pay everything in one month is absolutely imposible. First thing this year after Wacken is buy the tickets for the next one!

oh I'm thinking about it too. I want to make both Hellfest&Wacken, but I have other bold ideas for next summer as well. We'll see :D Besides I really like the northern cities in Europe, Hamburg is one of my favourites and I am always glad to spend some time in a city on the cost. Actually the sea is really important for me as my hometown is on the cost as well-so I always end up looking for water in my travel-times :)

I want to go so badly!!! But I missed the release day of the tickets. I thought it was going to be this December but I read later that it was in August! So early. Dammit. I've never been to Hellfest but hearing you guys talk about it (and Wacken) makes me want to go so badly :D I hope Tickettauschbörse works...

I've been to Wacken four years in a row, starting from 2007. It was an amazing experience, especially the first time and I have lots of good memories to think back to. However, I started to really dislike it quite a bit the last time I was there. In my opinion, Wacken is ridiculously crowded. Having the air crushed out of you as you're being sandwiched in between people twice your size multiple times, and losing a boot once in the process of getting out, kind of ruined it for me. Also, I felt the atmosphere had changed and people were fucking about more than before. But I wouldn't know what that's like now. Anyway, I would recommend at least going there once, just for the experience.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
