  1. Re: Female Players Wow, I had no idea what a can of worms I was opening here! (Funny that none of the female members of this forum have responded though - since there are clearly a fair few I would have thought that they would be among the first to get involved!)
  2. Re: New Purchases/Acquisitions Yeah, I think that I said that the album was quite poppy in another thread (stare vaguely into the distance and scratch head like a drunk ape). Anyway, thanks for getting back to me and it's nice to know that you like it, even if it shames you deeply to admit to it (cue Samuri sountrack and talk of Hara Kiri in terribly beautiful locations). I hadn't thought about Sharon's vocals like that before, but I think that you are right. Perhaps age is catching up with her!
  3. Re: some good gothic metal bands? No, NTNR, Epica are not cookie cutter. They have pushed the boundaries of classical crossover further than anybody else as well as having seriously philosophic lyrics. I think that they are pretty Goth, but if you don't that's absolutely fine. However, they are not power and, as I say, they are certainly not cookie-cutter.
  4. Re: lyric game: guess the song Sorry NTNR, but until now I have never heard of My Dying Bride (though I am sure they are great).
  5. Re: Kiss Vs Motley Crue People think Kiss started Black Metal. That is sooooo funny - I can't think of any band less Black Metal!
  6. Re: 5 word thread! Pizza is the best food!
  7. Re: music theory I have heard from a lot of guitarist that theory and more specifically scales took their soloing to another level . I also played around a bit with a strange scale (not that I am really a guitarist) called the Phrygian Dominant, which provides and awesome Middle Eastern sound!
  8. Re: Megadeath help! Murph, I promise I will listen to those songs but again I have no time! P.S. Is Machine Head thrash again, or are they still too Nu Metally?
  9. Re: How would you like to die? As painlessly as possible, after a long life but before my mind and body have degenerated so far that I am a vegetable in all but name!
  10. Re: LOKI'S CHILD -- a satire of music, culture, and politics
  11. Re: Kiss Vs Motley Crue I don't really knw much about either band but I have a Kiss CD so I guess I'll go with them - though the only song I love is I Was Made For Loving You Baby!
  12. Re: Dragonforce...the most popular power metal band at Hot t Boo Murph (and I never wanted too say that !). These bands are not posers. If you don't like their punk influence or commercial sound, that's cool. So too if you hate slipknot's stage antics. But lots of people love their music and they are talented musicians who have worked too hard for them to be lumped in with all the other lazy pop acts out there. And anyway, modern metal is punk derived, as the NWOBHM bands took inspiration from punk when the first metal bands had run themselves into a self-indulgent rutt.
  13. Re: Rate and Slate Yes, Satan59, the weather is wonderful!!!
  14. Re: LOKI'S CHILD -- a satire of music, culture, and politics
  15. Re: Megadeath help! Thanks Murph, I listen to these when I have more than just a moment to spare on here!
  16. Re: Rate and Slate Rating: That Shri Lanka are 129 for 5! Slating: It's monday.
  17. Re: New Purchases/Acquisitions Cool NTNR, I've just seen that you have Within Temptation's The Unforgiving - I'd love to know what you think! My new aquisition is Unto the Locust, by Machine Head!
  18. Re: some good gothic metal bands? I like that quote, Satan59!
  19. Re: dreamzone: the ultimate concert Thanks Murph, will do. I already have Endgame and I love it to bits! Sepultura is a new name to me so that's especially exciting!
  20. Re: Internet Comedy Oh, I just have to show you guys this thing, it absolutely slays me with laughter! 0ncTg3YXHGQ
  21. Re: Metal Core Hi, Metal Core is awesome! Incidentaly, I found a couple of quotes on ol' Wikipedia which are bound to raise a few eyebrows here. "Avenged Sevenfold emerged with a metalcore sound on their debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet but their style had evolved by their third album and first major label release, City of Evil into a hard rock/heavy metal sound." "Metalcore is distinguished from other fusions between punk and metal by its emphasis on general heavy metal characteristics as well as breakdowns,[3] which are slower, intense passages that are conducive to moshing.[4] Sepultura, who has been credited to "lay the foundation" for the genre,[5] and Pantera, who influenced Trivium, Atreyu, Bleeding Through and Unearth,[6] have been influential in the development of metalcore" Bad luck Murph!
  22. Re: NWOBHM for the beginner Whoa, even I know Bon Jovi are not metal. Me!
  23. Re: Rate and Slate Good on you Murph! Now go write those lyrics! Rating: Machine Head - I just got Unto the Locust today for a cut price as somebody had stolen the dummy so the shop had to bodge one up (lucky as I usually have to order my metal - or go further afield than where I live). A review will follow shortly just as soon as I have absorbed it's awesomeness. Slating: Heartburn - that Tart Tintin I cooked earlier is coming back at me a bit !
  24. Re: Ghosts Very, very true Murph. By much the same reasoning I currently believe in some sort of God, though I do not subscribe to any religion and am pretty sure they are false - but you never know.
  25. Re: some good gothic metal bands? Well, the thing is that the general opinion was the Symphonic was too diverse to have its own catagory, so bands like Epica have to go somewhere, as they sure as hell aren't Power. I plump for goth due to the dark atmosphere and deep and heavy chord progressions. To answer Satan59, I think the point of pidgeonholing is partly to help guide discussions/future listening choices and partly because, in keeping with metal in general, it is a male dominated genre. Thus, unto the laws of metal came the edict of the hairy man, that pegs shall be forced into holes, mattering not neither how square be the peg nor round be the hole!
