  1. Yup, too much writing today and getting my terms mixed up. I see your point about Death (maybe not the best example for making that point). No one has really topped what they did and the imitations are indeed cringe worthy. TBH, most progressive death I hear is pretty bad. It just seems to be the hardest mix of styles to get right in my opinion. I probably buy the least amount of music in this particular subgenre. Not to say there aren't a lot of good examples of getting it right, just a lot of bad ones. As for the kiddies digging old school bands, I wouldn't disagree. I'm just saying that those bands just don't have the same impact as they did when they first broke and absolutely no one sounded like them.
  2. Listening to Cannibal Corpse put hair on my chest and a tingle in my loins as a young lad. Sabaton doesn't do much for me. I lump them in with Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat. Crap that is very successful commercially and probably maintains that entry level spot for drawing interest to metal amongst the youth but not of much use to the seasoned vet. Speaking of manly music, so far today: Archgoat - Worship the Eternal Darkness - this is good, but I liked the last one a lot better. The evolution of their style works for me, but the songs aren't as strong. Apsu - Apsu - you just can't listen to this and not compare it to Tara. Technically very competent, but it pales in comparison. Still pretty decent. Probably dig Tara out later today. Culto Negro - Abismal Speed Metal Void Ceremony - Entropic Reflections Continuum
  3. I agree that they are 2 different animals. I respect them both for different reasons (Venom - originated a style/attitude, Death - musicianship/creativity), but honestly I've never really been into either band. I agree with @Sheol on the time and place thing. Both bands had a bigger impact when they were fresh and new vs. looking back in retrospect. I'd say that's true for most of the classic bands whether it's Possessed, Celtic Frost, Metallica, or Mayhem. Don't get me wrong, I like all of those bands and remember when most "hit" or I picked them up very young. A twenty-something today looking back at them now probably wouldn't be as impressed especially with the dearth of great bands out there now who took those early influencers and built a better product on that foundation.
  4. I'm a casual fan of the early stuff. I stop at Love at First Sting. The stuff with UJR is good shit. Going to see them in March and I'm a bit unsure of what they will sound like (50th anniversary tour). Klaus has an amazing voice, but he's 73 for the love of Satan.
  5. Love me some Priest, but I have to agree they have some real janky tunes I could live without. Could say the same about Maiden and plenty of other old school bands. I think the good stuff far outweighs the bad though. The later albums are mixed at best for me. Painkiller and Angel of Retribution have a few good tunes. I liked the title track from Firepower. Never heard anything from Nostradamus. Probably a few more songs here and there, but when I go to listen to Priest, it's normally Defenders back (74-84).
  6. I was usually on night shift at the hospital if I was out at night. We also lived in Tierrasanta where it was a bit warmer than closer down by the beach. I probably did bust out a sweatshirt now and then, but it's been 10 years since I was there and details fade. I do miss SD, especially the weather. The fires, traffic, cost of living maybe not so much. And hell, when it gets in the low 60's in Florida I'm in a parka and building a bonfire, so you're right.
  7. I was a bit underwhelmed myself. The new Suffering Hour left me with the same meh feeling. What we need is a new Chthe'ilist album. For the afternoon push: Ares Kingdom - Return to Dust Ares Kingdom - By the Light of their Destruction Hyperdontia - Hideous Entity
  8. Blood Incantation have a new one on the way in February: Metal Sucks: Blood Incantation’s New Album Timewave Zero Coming in February – The Ossuary (the-ossuary.com)
  9. All over the place today: Rahu - S/T Rahu - The Quest for the Vajra of Shadows Def Leppard - High 'N' Dry Sacred Reich - Ignorance In Flames - Colony Grand Belial's Key - Mocking the Philanthropist Autopsy - Mental Funeral
  10. Yeah, I've made no secret my love for Immolation over the years. If the new one continues in the vein of Atonement, I'll certainly be happy.
  11. I don't think I ever broke out a sweatshirt or hoodie when I lived in SD. Maybe a long sleeve to throw on in the morning on the way to the beach. Maybe post wetsuit depending on how early in the day it was. Coastal Eddie can make things a little cool first thing, but not quite sweatshirt level in my book.
  12. Paradise Lost - Icon Rudimentary Penis - The EPs of R.P. Parliament - Mothership Connection Butthole Surfers - Hairway to Steven
  13. Old school black metal on tap this morning: Mayhem - De Mesteriis Dom Sathanas Demoncy - Enthroned is the Night Inquisition - Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult Burzum - Filosofem Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
  14. Bandcamp splurge: Wolves in the Throne Room - Primordial Arcana Primordial Serpent - Hail The Serpent Inferno - Paradeigma Chain Cult - Shallow Grave Vomit Spell - Vomit Spell Archgoat - Worship the Eternal Darkness Albionic Hermeticism - Psalms to the Father Recluse - Stillbirth in Bethlehem & The Black Famine Rahu - S/t & The Quest for the Vajra of Shadows Plus a few others: Ancestral Shadows - Eldritch Illuminations Concrete Winds - Nerve Butcherer
  15. I think I'd rather have herpes than cassettes. Fucking scourge of the music world.
  16. Agreed. I've listened to several things by him and I'm always a bit confused why it keeps getting the metal tag.
  17. Man, Miles is definitely in my top 3 artists of all time. Birth of the Cool is a great collection. Today, checking out a few more newer releases I've seen on a few lists this week: Suffering Hour - The Cyclic Reckoning Warloghe - Three Angled Void Tomahawk - Tonic Immobility
  18. I tend to agree on much of that O Eternal Macabre one. I go through phases. Classic Rock/Punk/Thrash/Post-Punk as a teen, death metal as a young adult, black metal and prog after, goat metal (anything rough, nasty, abusive, and evil) over the past 5 years or so. Most recently I have been cycling through all of these with some regularity. What sounds good to me varies every day. I just like music, so I fill my day with whatever the current mood suggests be it bluegrass or war metal. I'd say my pallette has become well developed. Once in awhile something gives me that feeling I had way back when I first heard one of my favorites, but it's exceedingly rare these days. I guess the one thing that has changed is that I could no longer give any fucks whether or not anyone else likes the stuff I do. At various times that was somewhat important to me because I wanted others to see and feel what I did out of the stuff I really loved. These days I realize that it's just not in the cards. Once in a while something clicks for somebody and it does bring me happiness (my wife discovering acoustic Opeth and Anathema last year for instance). Everyone's different and that's cool. If it happens it happens. As an aside, I was listening to NPR on the way home today and it struck me how the little interludes between pieces reminded me of some newer Anathema. I don't know if that's an indictment of the band or an endorsement of the show.
  19. I wasn't crazy about it until I saw them live. Looking over my notes, it's likely top 25 rather than just outside the top 10. That linked list reminded me of quite a few releases I've forgotten about. I have the Suffering Hour queued up for tomorrow as one of those that had slipped my mind.
  20. This list although flawed had me laughing out loud at the category titles: Machine Music Presents: The Best Metal of 2021 | Machine Music - מאשין מיוזיק For the TL:DR crowd 6. INFERNO - Paradeigma 5. Dola - Czasy 4. Antichrist Siege Machine - Purifying Blade 3. Kaatayra - Inpariquipe 2. Suffering Hour - The Cyclic Reckoning 1. Grey Aura - Zwart vierkant I can't see any of those in my top 10 for this year although that ASM is badass and would be in the running for an honorable mention.
  21. Ancestral shadows - Eldritch Illuminations EP Ancient Mastery - The Chosen One EP Inferno - Paradeigma: Phosphenes of Aphotic Eternity Svrm - Розпад
  22. Toby Driver is the driving force behind both bands, thus the link. I've always intended on checking out Kayo Dot, but I can't remember every getting around to it.
