I like horror movies that rely on psychology and atmosphere.

    Session 9

    The Babadook

    The Silence of the Lambs

    The Thing

The Fly (this is much more gore but it's good)

    The Shining

    The Conjuring

    Misery

    28 Days Later

    Ginger Snaps

    Dead Silence

Eraserhead (I don't see this as a horror, more like some weird atmospheric dread abstract Lynch trip)

The conjuring and dead silence are badass. Cool list man.

I'm not familiar with all of those, but the few that I've seen are pretty good. I'm not so much into the modern torture porn Hostel type stuff, but Martyrs is a pretty good film in that vein that actually possesses a story and some sense of atmosphere. I wouldn't call anything by David Lynch horror, despite how creepy and weird it can be, but he is one of my favorite directors. I prefer Hitchcock's suspense flicks to Psycho, but the man was a genius, so I can't argue with its inclusion. It was the first horror movie that I saw when I was a kid, and it scared the piss out of the 5 year old BAN.

I consider David Lynch to be existential horror but there are some films that fall out of that category. I think Psycho has scared the piss out of every 5 year old. It' one of my favorites for sure;I named my cat Norman after Bates.

  3. I am a huge horror geek and thought it'd be cool to discuss our favorite films. My top 10 favorites are:

    Cannibal Holocaust

    Green Inferno

    Nekromantik

    Hostel

    Psycho

Eraserhead (Or anything directed by David Lynch really the man is a genius)

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original only)

    The Hills Have Eyes

    The Amityville Horror

    American Mary

If there is another related thread I apologize.

Scrambled tofu and soyrizo pickled carrots and Japanese shishiro peppers. Call or whatever you want it was delicious.

Oh, there was a full pitcher of coffee involved. Brought home some awesome-looking beers from NH but I think I need to hold off on that until next weekend.

With me a full pot of coffee is necessary for living so I can relate.

Sorry dude not been active for a few days.  In all seriousness that would be great but unfortunately I'm a bit tied up with the current group and other real life shit.  Will bear that in mind for the future though.

Any time dude just let me know.

I love most all of them, started with Dream Theater back in high school and got into Circus Maximus, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Pagan's Mind and Symphony X from them. I was interested in the darker and heavier stuff so I started listening to Dimmu, Wintersun, Winds of Plague. I love power metal, folk metal too. Nightwish was such a great band back when Tarja and Anette were there, but in my opinion they've been going downhill since Dark Passion Play. I think that may have been Tuomas' "magnum opus" ;)

    Right on man, welcome.

I think it might have more to do with the tempo and the short attention span of the average metal listener. I don't think it's unreasonable to state that most people just want balls out aggression because they need that constant stimulation, hence the rise in prominence of so many blast first, think later bands from across the extreme metal spectrum. That's not to say that doom can't be basic, but it seldom ever tries to ram riffs and drums down your throat.

Agreed. Admittedly if it hadn't been for Eyehategod and other sludge metal bands I don't think I would have delved past Sabbath either.

I would love to have the time to do so, but with work, a struggling marriage, two kids, and a band, I don't know how I would fit it in.

Totally understandable dude, just thought I'd throw it out there.

  9. I think anyone who seriously listens to Black Metal and extreme metal in general has the ability to differentiate between the dark imagery and subject matter and real life. I think the same goes for most people who perform it. I will concede that there is some bullshit within Black Metal but the same could be said for a lot of musical genres. Are you anti rap as well? Anti country? Regardless you are painting with a pretty broad brush and I think you should reconsider your thinking.

Just saw the date of the post. My apologies.

I think it has a lot to offer. It is the most diverse metal genre, and has a wide breadth of sounds beneath its umbrella. It's also the heaviest metal genre, so it's strange that those seeking heaviness don't often fall in love with it like they do other genres.

I think that is due to the "trendiness" of black metal and other forms of extreme metal like we were discussing in the other thread. I feel like people tend to gravitate towards death and black and don't give other subgenres much thought because their needs are satisfied there.

It has been many years since I've played Dorks & Dice, but I always enjoyed it. In a recent push for common ground, I did attempt to track my wife to play Magic: The Gathering, and I think I even caught her enjoying it a couple of times. Thrash and nerdy shit FTW.

I use an online service to play DnD if you guys were seriously down I could organize a group.

Another Scot here (more specifically Edinburgh)!  Here for some intellectual chat about all things metal.  Into most sub-genres but in particular thrash.  Apart from metal some interests include films/TV, games, bit of DnD (normally combined with alcohol but that's neither here nor there ;))

    Download 2018 anyone?

Cool man. I love thrash metal and Dungeons and Dragons holds a special place in my heart. Which bands are your favorite?

It has always been the black sheep of the metal family tree. Pretty sad, considering that it was one of the main origins of the whole genre.

Yeah that is kind of counterintuitive. It has become by far my favorite subgenre due to some excellent suggestions found on this forum.

The irony of liking something that hipsters like before they thought it was cool is staggering.

Laughably enough, said hipsters would mock you as trendy.

It's not really that US bands are overlooked, it's more because doom metal bands are overlooked.

I suppose that's accurate. I simply don't see Doom as a niche genre, excluding Funeral Doom obviously; But I suppose other people might.
