You really can't go wrong with them, even their groove metal albums are head and shoulders above the shit that most thrash bands became in the 90's. Their first 5 are the old essentials, but I enjoy I Hear Black and Bloodletting from their groove phase a great deal, and newer albums like Ironbound and White Devil Armory are also sick. Those Guitar Hero worshipping pizza-thrash losers can't keep up with the new material of a bunch of 50-something's, so I'm surprised that the movement hasn't expired already.

Sick I'm going to the record store after work I'll keep an eye out.

if I ever got anything, it would be the Minor Threat black sheep - my avatar - on my calf, and possibly the valknut on my wrist...
but I can never justify spending money on a tattoo...
Whatever you do, dont go looking for "cheap" tattoos. You get what you pay for.

I was afraid to do this kind tattoo, but I had done it and it wasn't so awful
At first I thought that I will do a tattoo like #9 from here http://inkprofy.com/ear-tattoos/ but than I decided to art a roseDude that's really cool. Never seen anyone with anything like that.

To me they kick so much ass. I know they're pretty much a municipal waste side project but nonetheless I really dug the album crossover ministry.
-
Not overly familiar with this band. Which albums should I look out for?

Any Iron Reagan fans?

I have Black Flag logo on my left bicep, DRI on my thigh, crimson ghost on my foot, storm trooper helmet on my right shoulder, poetry from the ring of power on my right bicep followed by the triforce of courage. I have the corpse bride on my other foot and a stick and poke slice of pizza on my rib cage. Oh and a deathly Hallows symbol on my right forearm.
Additionally I have a scarification piece of the star wars imperial cog on my chest

You're absolutely right. Definitely not too proud to admit when I'm wrong. I suppose I allowed my adoration of Slayer to get the best of me.

By far one of the best DM records ever... The thing which sells it for me is how they keep a consistent tone and feeling throughout the whole thing, it's really a "composite piece" as I think people say. Like classical music, everything ties together so nicely. If you listen to the riffs, you notice this 1-4-3-4-2-4-3-4 motif coming up all the time (Chapel, Maze, Rites), I find it cements a certain atmosphere throughout the record..
There are other things they do this with as well, sometimes particular parts (or even kinds) of solos at specific points, bringing back certain drum or vocal rhythms later on, the whole thing feels like it's been built (or "grew") with one vision, one ideal in mind.
Probably the baseline for DM, as far as I'm concerned - if it's not up there with Altars of Madness, I don't have time to listen to it anymore... Good review, man, reminded me why I love this record so much
I would certainly agree. I think Slowly We Rot by Obituary started my interest in DM but Altars of Madness really sealed the deal.

wow - Cirith Ungol...brings back sooo many memories of looking at their album covers and geeking out on the fantasy vibe. Old school D&D nerd here as well.!! I remember buying Grim Reapers See You In Hell and CU's King Of The Dead on the same day.
They were pretty bad though. We always joked around about how "unpolished" they were. I could only listen to one or two songs and then had to go to something else for a while.
See I find that endearing as someone who found value in the vocals of one Darby Crash (retrospectively of course, he died over a decade before my birth). Musically speaking I'm definitely more moved by the energy of a record than it's technical prowess. But I can definitely understand your point, especially regarding the vocals which are definitely the weakest point.

yeah....Metallica dropped out of Big 4 status after ...And Justice....replaced by a flood of other awesome!!
at the time though, I would have done:
1. Anthrax
2. Slayer
3. Megadeth
4. Metallica
I am probably in the minority, but I always loved Anthrax's vibe..the whole thumbing their nose at "leather metal", and their punk/street/skate/NY thing. They were nerds of a sort...and so am/was I. I got into them via listening to Suicidal, DRI, Agnostic Front and other hardcore stuff....
Punk was my first love. I always have favored slayer for their aggression in that respect.

Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning interchangeably. I definitely dig And Justice For All and was mildly amused by the first half of Hardwired.

Dude, I can't believe you would even say that. Megadeth. Always Megadeth.
Megadeth would be a close second for me followed by Anthrax and then Metallica. If Metallica had not.. done whatever the hell St. Anger was.. then that list would be different but St. Anger was an unforgivable album.

So, I won't lie to you guys. I had not heard of this band and had certainly never heard of this record before I glanced over another record in the Doom 101 thread and upon looking up the band I stumbled upon this gem. From the opening track (atom smasher) to the title track (king of the dead) the heaviness of this record is made apparent almost immediately. However what really stood out to me, even more so than the vocals (which were really unique I might add) was the bass playing. As a big fantasy nerd I definitely got a kick out of this record lyrically speaking. Overall while I would definitely categorize the band as closer to classic heavy metal than doom. Definitely would recommend and will be looking into further.

Hey, I'm from Arizona as well. I'm in the Phoenix/Glendale area

Well that certainly explains your music preferences. Godspeed you peerless altruist taking upon yourself the unrelenting negativity of the nation's aggregated dimwits, assclowns and shitheads. I worked retail part-time for the last year and from what light interaction I had with customers in that capacity I can't even begin to imagine how stark raving mad I would have gone if I were in your position.
Oh dude you have no idea. The stupidity I deal with on a daily basis is fucking astounding. It requires copious amounts of thrash metal to get out of bed in the morning.
-
Dude I can't believe this is even a discussion. Slayer. Always Slayer.
-
Definitely not my favorite Maiden record but Id be lying if I said I haven't listened to it more than once.

I go to Zia Records every time I'm in Vegas and always find plenty to splurge on. Not sure if it's better or worse in Phoenix, but the ones I've been to were great.

Oh I'm not arguing that, just saying that's what we have. What I miss most about the Bay Area is a place called Rasputins. They bought out Tower records and their selection is fucking rad.

Sorry to hear that mate, Hope tomorrow brings you better fortunes.
Also some very cool bands on that list of yours. I'm a huge fan of Doom, BM, and DM along with thrash, some folk, some power, and some progressive metal. Alongside a bit of grindcore, punk, blues, classical.
Thanks man. Just some economic bullshit it'll pass. Right on in regards to the music, I can get down with all of those genres. Do you like any funeral doom? I feel like much like BM it can get a bit ridiculous but when it's good it' heavy as shit.

Oh dude that place looks like it was the shit. But alas I suppose I will have to be content with the metal section at the record store.

I dig some DRI, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, early Death, Morbid Angel, dig Possessed's first album but haven't heard anything else from them, dig Venom's first three, and Darkthrone are godly. I visited Phoenix a couple of times in the early 00s. There was a cool metal store, I think it was called Metal Devastation. I spent about $250 there. Are you familiar with that place? is it still there?
Not familiar unfortunately. Do most of my shopping at a place called Zia records. I'm originally from the bay area but I've lived here for about 4 years. I will definitely look into it and if it's still there I'll report back.

Also I know you guys don't know me but today has been a truly shit day so some good vibes, prayers, Germanic chanting, whatever is your deal would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum. What are some of your favorite metal bands? Are you the boy or the girl in your avatar picture?
I'm the guy although my girl also depicted digs metal as well. Some of my favorite bands are Slayer, D.R.I , Iron Reagan, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Possessed, Deicide, Venom, Dark Throne, 1349. And then of course Maiden, Priest and Sabbath. As far as my taste in hardcore goes Black Flag and TSOL are pretty high on my list. Uhhh other than that I'm from Phoenix, Arizona. I work in a call center.
