I'd love to visit Arizona one day. I did the LA to Vegas drive once and those deserts are amazing, so going on to Arizona and New Mexico would be great. I like the idea of being a cowboy and I really want to visit Tombstone in New Mexico one day. And of course, eating genuine barbecue - something that, as far as I know, isn't really available in Australia. Not in the proper, US style at least.

Well, if youre ever in town let me know. Ill make sure you hit all the right places to eat. Arizona is best known for killer mexican food. Additionally the Phoenix area has quite the restaurant scene of all different types.

I'm not into genres, or even metal exclusively (about half of all my albums are metal), but tend to like "the musicians' choice" in terms of what's interesting, remarkable, well played, etc. It's all very subjective, of course, but I like to think that I'm into quality. My favourites tend to change with my overall mood ... but like so many others, I love most that which had an impact on me at the tender age. Which in my case means stuff from the 70s, and modern productions that have a similar kind of groove.

My eternal favourite band is Motörhead. My other true love is Black Sabbath.

Fuck yeah dude. I have a Motörhead tattoo. Were gonna get along fine. Welcome to the forum.

That could have easily been a Hannibal Lector "I'm having a friend for dinner" type of comment. I'm only about 700 miles from Phoenix, but I hate the heat, so I tend to avoid the desert. I have family in Las Vegas though, so I end up in the desert heat more than I would like...

I agree man, i moved here from the east bay area like 5 years ago. Ive gotten pretty used to summer, but its still pretty ugly. Youre in Utah if im remembering correctly?

It's been a while since I've had good barbecue. When it's done right, it's hard to beat. We have a couple of good places here in town, but ever since my wife had her gallbladder removed, she's had a hard time eating really fatty meats. I usually only get to enjoy it when I'm on my own or out with a friend.

Come visit, friend. We will grill up meats of all kinds.

You know upon posting that i realized it could be taken out of context. Lol

Spoken like a true Texan. Are you a Texan?

Tonight we're going out for Chinese in the local Chinese population hub. I love the whole experience, it reminds me of going to Hong Kong. I'm going to eat like a maniac.

No i am an arizonan. But texas style barbecue is amazing. Also chinese food is delicious enjoy.

I certainly hope so. I bet theyve already hired private investigators to harass me for leaving the church.

That statement on its own, while troubling, wouldn't really register on my radar. I'm sure that there are informed individuals who really feel that way, but when people make sweeping statements and represent them as the product of loads of research they haven't really done, or have weird preconceived notions about something that they haven't bothered to explore and try to pass them off as facts, that kind of thing needs to be corrected.

I think the point of any kind of internet discussion forum is to exchange ideas and that means that sometimes there is going to be contradiction and disagreement. Anyone who cant handle that probably doesnt belong here.

My wife uses cola when she makes a pot roast too, I think it achieves the same thing. They usually turn out really well, so even though I don't drink soda, I can't argue with results.

Indeed. I do drink soda out of habit from when i quit smoking but im trying to limit it.

Just made some Thai green curry with tofu and mixed vegetables. Rice on the side. I don't know exactly what I'm doing when it comes to tofu, but it's come out well the last few times - stir fried in coconut oil with salt, cumin, and garlic, until it turns a bit golden and crispy outside.

And those ribs sound interesting - Dr. Pepper, huh?

Yeah. It comes out really tender. Probably the acid in the soda and the sugar blends really well with the barbecue sauce. We always slow cook these though, ive never tried it as a regular marinade for grilling.

Also green curry is awesome. Love me some thai food.

I saw them live once and they sucked. I had no desire to see them again after that, I prefer to remember them how they were and not how they are now.

I have heard that as well. Thats a shame.

Other than being drunk and getting tossed around during Obituary's set at MDF a few years ago, it's probably been about 10 years since I've moshed. I always felt like I was missing the show, and I'll headbang if I'm really getting into it, but otherwise I just prefer to take it all in and watch the performance. Since it's a classic/iconic album, and Blind Guardian has a pretty devoted following, the whole venue sang their asses off with Hansi during those huge choruses. I've never really felt the whole "metal unity/brotherhood" concept that many seem to espouse, but that feeling of everyone singing together was really cool. Their performance was on another level, absolutely stunning.

I definitely share that sentiment. I feel like it was okay when I was mainly going to punk shows because moshing is just a big part of that. But i feel like metal, to me, is something i want to be present for.

I would say start with the formative bands to get a feel for the origins and work your way forward. Here is a list of albums to get you started:

Thergothon - Stream From the Heavens
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet, Ethere, and Lead and Aether
dISEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence Into the Peripheral (not truly funeral doom, but they were a massive influence upon the genre and some of their songs fit within that context)
    Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency
Mournful Congregation - Tears From a Grieving Heart
    Ysigim - Whispers
Worship - Last Tape Before Doomsday

Thanks BAN. Ill listen through and report back.

At this point, they were pretty standard power/speed metal, albeit a lot more epic and aggressive than most of their contemporaries. They added symphonic and progressive elements later, but this is the sound I prefer from them. Seeing this album played live start to finish was a highlight of my time listening to metal, they were flawless.

Dude that sounds like such an experience. As i get older I am less interested in jumping into the pit at shows and more interested in experiencing the music from a sonic perspective.

  14. For me Slayer was one of those bands that just blew my mind wide open and changed my worldview forever. I think they have a career of great albums and while some of those albums stand out amongst the rest, they all deserve my respect. There isn't a Slayer album that incites disgust in me the way St. Anger or Load Reload does. So while I agree that some of the more recent albums are far cry from Show No Mercy or Hell Awaits I am still sad I didn't get to see them before they disbanded. I will forever kick myself.

Krypts is some nice spacey death metal, I like all their material with a slight preference on their 2009 demo over anything else they released, but the last two albums are still great. I'd reccomend them if you are into Burial Invocation, Corpsessed and the likes

Totally agree. They have a super interesting sound.
