well Port Adelaide were defeated for the first time in 2013, beaten not by our opposition North Melbourne but by the umpires, 27 free kicks against us only 5 for us in the entire game including the most rediculous free kick ever payed where one of our players was tackled around the neck from behind and rather then recieving a free kick from the umpire who was standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM said umpire gave a free kick the the opposition IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE PLAYER STILL DISPOSED OF THE BALL LEGALLY (even the commentators were appaled at that one)

as an AFL fan I am absolutely shattered. To see one of the oldest clubs in the land, Melbourne, become completely irrelevant is horrible. The tale of today was pretty telling in the end Melbourne lost by 83 points and the line used to describe the game was "This feels about right, Collingwood aren't good enough to beat Melbourne by ninety points plus but Melbourne aren't good enough to lose by under eighty points". There were fifty five thousand people at that game today at a ground with a capacity of over one hundred thousand and with ten minutes left in the game the stands were literally empty, even the supporters of the team that was winning had enough and walked out.

That's not good for your game never mind the team. You always want "your" team to win but you have to have good competition othewise it's dull.
in an 18 team competition we're halfway through the season and just completed the first of three bye rounds where a third of the teams have a bye and the ladder stands as 1. Geelong 10 wins, 1 loss, 2. Hawthorn 9 wins, 1 loss (they had the bye last week), 3. Sydney 8 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses, 4. Essendon 8 wins, 3 losses, 5. Fremantle 7 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses, 6. Collingwood 7 wins, 4 losses, 7. Carlton 6 wins, 5 losses, 8. West Coast 6 wins, 5 losses, 9. Richmond 6 wins, 4 losses, 10. Adelaide 5 wins, 6 losses, 11. Port Adelaide 5 wins, 5 losses, 12. Gold Coast 5 wins, 6 losses, 13. North Melbourne 4 wins, 7 losses, 14. Western Bulldogs 3 wins, 7 losses, 15. Brisbane 3 wins, 7 losses, 16. St. Kilda 2 wins, 9 losses, 17. Melbourne 1 win, 10 losses (fourth time in six years they have been 1 and 10), 18. GWS 0 wins 11 losses (but they have only existed for two seasons including this one now)

I can contribute to this thread with just one post-so why not now? I'm deeply uninterested in following sport events on the TV. When I was in France this February I stayed with a friend who is a big football fan and wanted to see the Paris Saint Germain's game with David Beckham. He bought beers and wanted company, so he lured me into watching it with him. He told me "we'll play a drinking game-you pick up a football player and when the commentators say his name, you drink. If he scores a goal, bottoms up. So he said-I pick Beckham, it's his first game with that team, you pick what? Since there was only one player I knew, I said Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He was mentioned. A lot. He scored. A lot. I got one very unpleasant hangover but I managed for once to enjoy a football game.

good weekend for AFL, Port Adelaide's under 18 women's team won the premiership in their competition for the second year running, Port Adelaide's top grade women's team secured a spot in the finals, in the SANFL Port Adelaide defeated Norwood by five points in a game where 177 tackles were laid (the average tackle count for a game is about 40) seeing Port Adelaide win their third consecutive game and giving them a good shot at playing finals, and in the AFL Port Adelaide snapped a five game losing streak in emphatic fashion defeating GWS by 75 points

an AFL/SANFL matter here The media in South Australia today decided to put to the SANFL exactly how they should go about making room for an Adelaide Crows seconds team (a team for the Adelaide listed players not on AFL duties) whilst at the same time getting rid of the most hated club in the league. They suggested the SANFL remove the Port Adelaide Magpies from all level of competition and replace them at all levels with an Adelaide Crows side. This would mean removing a side which has played in 71 SANFL grand finals in its 143 year history and won 36 of them, the most successful club in the SANFL, a club which has won 6 premierships in the last 20 years surpassed only by Central Districts who have won 9, this would also mean removing the best development setup in the state, Port Adelaide's junior, under 16 and under 18 sides are regularly among the best in their competitions and in the national under 18s competition this year six Port Adelaide players are representing our state. Perhaps the most important consideration though is that the Port Adelaide Magpies bring in $700,000 of revenue every year direct to the SANFL making them the largest source of funds in the SANFL. Of course the media know all of this but they don't care they just want to be rid of one Port Adelaide side so they can focus fully on bringing about the downfall of the AFL team.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
