  1. In answer to the question that led to this thread, any rational and informed argument to form an opinion on being "anti" anything is necessary yes. When we look at the examples of burning churches then we are firmly beyond the realms of rationality. We get into the area of fanaticism, incitement and arguably terrorism. I've just read an interview with Satyr (from BM band Satyricon for those unsure) who said that the whole controversy around the BM scene was down to a very small circle of people with a conviction to not just sing about their philosophy but a determination to act it out also. Others were just drawn into the circle by stronger characters who made no attempt to make them understand the extent of what they were involved in. The need to belong to something extreme, to feel a part of something that represents your anti political or anti religious beliefs isn't necessarily satiated by the music or lyrics of certain bands for some people and they resort to random acts of violence or vandalism. Whilst I agree with the "giant middle finger to the norm" mentality of metal as a music format and how attractive that is to people (especially the young) there is a limit. Alice Cooper for years has used shocking theatrics to deliver his performance and generate interest in his music but he has a limit still. The lyrics and imagery of Slayer have suggested penchant for the darker side of beliefs and derision for traditional values of religion, but they have never professed to be Satanists or moved beyond using their music as a platform for their opposition to or questioning of religion. There is an important distinction to be made between using dark art and lyrics because you think it is cool (which isn't my view) or a gimmick and using such formats because it's what the artist/person genuinely believes. "Anti" religion is valid as a standpoint, it's how it is delivered that determines it's overall relevance and acceptability. In the same way you should be allowed to express your christian, islamic, etc views through your music also. If you don't like it then don't listen to it.

  3. Wii bowling, metal and beer! Fucking awesome!
  4. As mentioned elsewhere finally got to visit the pub in town that only serves single malt whiskeys, traditional ales and craft beers. Sampled a Japanese single malt called Yamazaki which was amazing, really sweet with vanilla and caramel and def made better by being aged in Bourbon barrels. Just priced this up online and it's £100 a bottle - maybe a bit of saving needed. On the beer front I had a Brooklyn Lager which was really peppery in the aftertaste yet smooth and comforting at the same time. The porter on offer was 1872 and it was heavy with coffee and chocolate - in fact I struggled a bit with it having had a couple of Samuel Adams at home before heading out. Finally I had Pennine Natural Gold which was a golden ale (surprise surprise) full of fruity notes - notably pear - with some honey aftertaste and biscuity malt. Because the gf was with me and she is not into her ale that much we moved to some rum specialist bar and I had a pint of Brahma which was frankly fucking awful. Given what I had just consumed it was like a soft drink so gassy I had to leave it. Final bar of the night had Samuel Adams Boston Lager on draft so I was happy to end on a high note.
  5. 2nd hangover in 3 days - both of them entirely worth it. Last night I finally got around to visiting the pub that only serves traditional ales and single malt whiskeys. Will populate the beer appreciation thread with the detail.

  16. Started my Kiss collection off today with their debut. For so many years I liked the idea of Kiss more than I actually liked them as an artist. The irony of dressing like an armoured demon, breathing a fire and then singing about partying all night long has not been lost on me either, however I can now see past all the gimmick and realise Kiss have some really good songs hiding behind all the pomp and circumstance. The debut is some great 70s rock and has been a great starting point.
  17. Been to my niece's baptism today and her head is too big for her body (not massive but disproportionate at least). Mother in law says scans have shown an "abnormality" in the rear of her brain but she seems healthy enough so the doctors are just keeping an eye on her.
