Yeah, I love first wave black metal and listen to a ton of it. This list is nowhere near all inclusive, but it should hit on most of the big first wave players: Venom Hellhammer Celtic Frost Mercyful Fate Bathory NME Sodom (up to Sodomy and Lust) Destruction (up to Infernal Overkill) Kreator (debut and demos) Tormentor Sarcófago Vulcano Bulldozer Mayhem (Deathcrush, PFA, etc...) Treblinka (Swe) Morbid (Swe) Poison (Deu) Sabbat (Jpn) There are plenty of bands from the start of the second wave that have a similar feel, as well as more atavistic bands of today still making music along these lines, but that should be a solid start for you. It's all good dude, I've been at this for a while and am constantly finding gaps in my collection, especially when doing recommendations/"show and tell" with albums. It's when compiling lists and recommendations that my omissions become more obvious, and that's usually when I try to fill in what is obviously missing, whereas otherwise I just tend to shop based on availability. Sounds like a fun gig to be able to do it at a record store though, please report back with how it goes.

The record store by my office is closing up, so they're liquidating everything. All of their used CDs are down to $1/each, so I took advantage and loaded up.

For German thrash, I tend to reach for Holy Moses, Deathrow or, Protector, and for Bay Area thrash, I'm all about Dark Angel, Sadus, Vio-Lence, etc...

I think that the biggest problem, by and large, is that genres are represented by the music media as extensions of the pop garbage acts that dumb down the sound of said genre until it's an almost unrecognizable pastiche of that genre's worst elements and pop dogshit. People think hip-hop sucks because they hear Lil Wayne on the radio, not A Tribe Called Quest. People think punk sucks because they hear Blink 182 on the radio, not Dead Kennedy's. People think heavy metal sucks because they hear Avenged Sevenfold on the radio, not Manilla Road. There is good stuff to be found in most every genre, but that's exactly the problem, you usually have to go and find it. Most music consumers are not music fans, that shallow easy to digest pap is what they want to hear, and since they're in the majority, that's what gets sold. Depth of music requires depth of thought and emotion to appreciate, and let's face it, most people just don't have what it takes to even make their own decisions, let alone analyze and decipher the thoughts and feelings of others through a sonic medium.

They pretty much alternated on the older albums. Ventor sounded more gruff, Mille was higher and more raspy.

I love it when one metal black metal bands are started by drummers, because the drums are usually the weak link in those projects. With seasoned drummers though, that is not the case, so bands like Arckanum and Leviathan have an advantage in that way.

Definitely. Arckanum is one of the best black metal bands from Sweden IMO, they deserve a great deal more attention than they receive. Same goes for Avsky, and also the band they remind me most of, Craft, whom I like slightly more.

Flames of Hell may fit the title of this thread more than anyone. They recorded their one album in the basement of a YMCA in Iceland circa 1987, were kicked out following that recording along with the producer, pressed 1000 copies of said album, and then fell off the face of the earth. It's pretty weird sounding stuff too, lots of guitar solos, bizarre atmosphere, and some wild vocals.

You forgot Branded and Exiled, but yes, I agree that they would get even better. Under Jolly Roger doesn't grab me as much as their early albums, but Port Royal and Death or Glory are two of the best power metal albums ever.

I'm also training a dog, dog sitting two others, saw Pentagram last night, seeing Anvil tonight, then Chelsea Wolfe on Tuesday and Voivod on Thursday. Life is good.

Thanks dude, I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm in a similar field, dealing with fewer, but larger shipments and a larger area, as opposed to a bunch of small shipments on a local scale. I'm also working with a great bunch of professionals for better pay with less hours, and my boss is one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever met. Needless to say, the last job coming to an end might have been one of the biggest blessings in disguise of my whole life.
