  1. Re: Anti Black Metal Valfar, I did listen to Ghost...honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh, their music just sounds so passive, chill and groovy that it's hard to believe they're Satanic. You should listen to Gorod's 'Hidden Genocide' - it's a great car stereo song, because no one around here listens to music that heavy and that funky. Anyhow, Ritual was entertaining: I loved the monastic-style robes that the bassist and guitar players were wearing. The riffs were also substantial and jazz-based, which I liked. You might like this, it's unorthodox with some good piano in it and still manages to convey a dark sound. z6ePvrgSu1Y I had actually always wanted a kind of 'monk metal', if you will. Something based on hymns or Byzantine-type singing, along with guitars based somewhat around central pipe organ melodies, where all of the members wore robes like that. It may well be something original to bring to the scene, especially with songs structured like hymns with the same long, basic theme repeated over a couple of verses, with added elements thrown in. You could very easily take in classical elements if you're composing long melodies, so that's an added bonus. I think it would reach back to older church history and provide something original to the metal scene. So I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked Ghost's lyrics...but the music still had merit, hence I'm not completely against it.
  2. Re: Rate the user above 9.3/10 for asking me what it meant instead of just ignoring it and pretending like you thought it was good.
  3. Re: Rate the song above you! 5/10...I disliked the vocals, the drumming was average and the guitar was groovy but not spectacular in my mind. kaorQ7AdQbw
  4. Re: most unusual instrument you seen a metal band play Alchemist have used didgeridoos before as well. I also think Suspyre used a saxophone at one point. Heidevolk has used a Jew's harp which actually worked well. But this here... JL8UTjXoJwg IZ EPIK.

Re: Tattoos So this is what the Priest tattoo looks like: I want this on a shirt, as a general statement to the Twilight fans of this world. Something along the lines of a thorn branch twisted into knotwork, tattooed to the forearms, would also be amazingly cool. What is the meaning of that four-pointed star? It's like the HIM heartagram, I see it every now and then... By the way, MetalMaiden, did you do the artwork for your signature? It's very talented material. I tend to shy away from colors and stick to just pencil for sketching because I can't readily get the lighting to look anywhere near the real thing. However, I do have some very good colored pencils which can produce good lighting if need be.
  6. Re: Oh, I didn´t see this forum before... Good to have you. I like Kai Hansen as well, he really rocked on some of Iron Savior's mid-year stuff.
  7. Re: Rate the song above you! Solos were awesome, great clean sweep picking. I thought they upheld the heavy metal banner very well. I do wish the vocals had been stronger though. About 7/10 or 7.5/10, I think, mainly because speed/traditional metal is not really my style. aokXtA6XCKc A relatively unknown progressive metal band with some harsh vocals from Christian Alvestam. Guitars done by Jani Stefanovic - I think this guy is very underrated.

    bands?

Re: Good folk metal bands? So do you play bagpipes? I've been to several Highland games and the bagpipes sounded very similar to Folkstone's to me, especially on Briganti Di Montagna.
  9. Re: Your Artwork Well, I have a couple of band logos I've drawn. They're a bit rough and the paper I drew them on has some graphite residue, but I hope you like them. I might submit some more, depending on whether I summon up the motivation to do so.
  10. Re: Anti Black Metal Well, I know we're at least 25% similar because my grandmother was off the boat Irish... My mom got me an awesome Ireland t-shirt, it's got an elaborate knotwork design on the front. But as for diversity in metal...heck yes. People love stereotyping this genre to pieces, most people here in the USA only know about traditional metal and metalcore, and think those two encompass all of metal. I've actually been on long car rides when I wanted to put my music on; people on those trips thought metal was metalcore, so when I ask to put on Theocracy and I say it's metal...they say I can't play it, because they think I'm going to put on August Burns Red or Haste the Day. Interestingly, folk metal is a great display of diversity since every region has its own themes, instruments, melodies, etc. Speaking of which, check out Shangren, you might like them. RCmjw-PtQj8 ROf35CVBCWU And I can play the intro/opening melody to this one on guitar, too.

    bands?

Re: bands? Well, I refer you to my post in the "Good Folk Metal Bands" thread: It depends on the region. There are folk metal bands for almost any ancient culture you want to pick. I'd say people have got the Finnish folk scene and Celtic folk metal pretty well covered, although I didn't see Cruachan or Moonsorrow pop up and both of them are pretty good. South America: there isn't much here, but Peruvian bands seem the most authentic. Chaska is my favorite. They're a folk/death combo. Celtic areas: Folkstone is an Italian band, but their bagpipes are pretty authentic. They sound like they're directly from the Highland games. Other than that, fairly typical folk metal fare. Leaves' Eyes new album Meredead has a lot of Celtic and apparently Old English influences. Cruachan is also Irish folk/black metal and I like them. They use flute and bagpipes...they also have a female singer who does sound a lot like what you'd expect in a Celtic band. Viking/Norse Pagan: Svartsot is great: they have penny-whistles and immensely folky, powerful guitars mated to brutal death growling. Heljareyga is a side project of Heri Joensen from Tyr, ostensibly with a viking flavor. Heidevolk, while Dutch and Saxon, still qualifies as Norse pagan since they mention Wodan and Donar, which seem to be variants of Oden and Thor. Plus they bring clean vocals into folk metal, WHICH ALMOST NO ONE SEEMS TO DO. Heidevolk is my absolute favorite folk metal band. Eastern Europe: Oddly enough, my favorite one from here is a very little-known group called Oskord; they use flutes as their prime folk instrument. Middle East: Narjahanam, Arsames, Orphaned Land, Melechesh, Myrath (a bit more progressive). Refer to the 'arab metal' thread for more about these. East Asia: Shangren is a Chinese group which does actually sound Chinese. I can't name the instruments but check them out anyway. Rudra is a powerful black metal assault from Singapore who sings about some history in the area. Alchemist, from Australia, uses dijeridoos in one song, Austral Spectrum. Dijeridoo is an Australian aborigine instrument. Africa: Sorry...nothing south of the Sahara.
  12. Re: Rate the user above Quid pro quo. 9.2/10. Thank you.
  13. Re: Threshold He's only done live shows so far, but apparently a new album is in the works. I personally liked Hypothetical and Dead Reckoning the most out of all their work. In addition, Long Way Home is my absolute favorite metal song...the lyrics read a lot like a prophecy about my life, so I can relate to them very well.
  14. Re: Anti Black Metal Fair enough, I'll be sure to listen to them later. What I was trying to say was that you were willing to admit these bands had talent, whereas ReturntoCarthage called them 'hacks', 'losers' and 'rightful outcasts'. I did not misquote you in any way either. I won't deny the roots of black metal are anti-Christian - I can't anyway. But from a purely logical standpoint, to say that since black metal has always been anti-Christian, and therefore must stay that way, is a textbook case of a fallacy of chronology. The linchpin here is that you said it's your opinion that the lyrics don't really suit the music. This argument I can understand. What you're not doing is calling these people 'hacks' or 'losers', because you clearly think they do have at least something to offer, as you didn't just comprehensively dismiss it all without even listening to it. You're also willing to say that it's your preference as well, whereas ReturntoCarthage just dismissed the whole genre. I also didn't care for his vitriol. You said you liked anti-Christian and anti-social music, yet you've never tried to tell me that I was a moron and a sheep. In addition, you've been willing to carry on a discussion about different black metal which I've enjoyed, and I think has been perfectly civil. As a matter of taste, of atmosphere, yes, this will be an ongoing argument and I won't bother arguing it. If it seems incongruous to you, that's fine - I won't try to change that.
  15. Re: glam and gothic metal Well, I'd say glam is a variant of heavy metal, and khaos has a lengthy gothic metal thread in this very category.
  16. Re: Claim Your FREE Metal Forum T-Shirt! Some of the reasons here are actually pretty nice to listen to. I hope we all shall be good emissaries for metal out there in the shallow, dismissive, smug, style-obsessed and auto-tuned world that is the pop charts... "I don't always play my music. But when I do, I prefer the heavy stuff. Stay metal, my friends." \m/

Re: Tattoos Good call, I don't really want anything I can't remove. Although I do think that having a big honking cross tattoo on my forehead like the protagonist of Priest would be cool. I also occasionally write band names across the knuckles of my left hand. I've done Svartsot, Firewind, Morifade and Sabaton.
  19. Re: Ban the user above you! Banned for a non sequitur...Judas Preist, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Slayer, Rhapsody of Fire? I like them too. It's just that I find Thy Majestie ever so much cooler.
  20. Re: Rate the user above 9/10 for waiting.
  21. Re: What Are You Listening To? 'Independent Harmony' by Division By Zero. \m/
  22. Re: Christian Black Metal I've already seen this, apocalypse922 showed it to me But yeah, I always liked Evoken's Antithesis of Light even though it was simple...because it was downright scary. Speaking of which, ever hear Mirrorthrone? That's probably the most frightening music I've ever heard.
