  1. Cloak - The Burning Dawn I still can't get over how good these guys were last night. They took forever to set up and disappeared for like 15 minutes and the crowd starting getting restless, came back looking like I don't even know...some black metal version of Motley Crue from hell or something before unceremoniously tearing into their first song and delivering a faceful of metal. Totally wasn't expecting that. Then again I have no idea why I'm trying to listen to anything right now after 1349 ripped my eardrums apart lol. Aural hellfire, indeed.
  2. Dudes, I had the grandest time tonight! 1349 was incredible - I knew they'd be great but they still way exceeded my expectations even without Frost. Dominator is a total beast and a loud motherfucker. I can safely say it might very well be the best show I've ever been to. I don't think I've ever felt like I've received such an ass-kicking at a show before. I feel like I've just run a fucking marathon in the freezing rain. I'm going to sleep now because I've been awake for like 21 hours and I can barely move or hear. Best highlight of the night - I was so in awe of 1349 and over the moon about seeing them that I realized at the same moment Ravn looked directly at me that I was grinning like such a dufus while throwing up the horns and being completely mortified about it but then he threw up the horns in response. Oh and also when he grabbed my and a bunch of other people's hands in the front row before they left the stage. I even got a little corpse paint souvenir on my knuckles for about 2 minutes before I got drenched in the rain outside the venue haha. Still it was rad! ??
  3. I'm going to see 1349 (sans Frost) in like 24 hours. Very excited. I've never seen them before because they're finally playing somewhere that's a halfway reasonable driving distance from me. I'd post some pics in the pic thread but I hate to be THAT GUY with their stupid phone in the air at the front of the stage. I always want to punch people like that in the face.
  4. Some of my most favorite black metal lol. I love all three of these albums. They just had a bit of a different atmosphere/overall sound than what everyone else was doing at the time. They should never have let Nocturno leave after they did Nemesis Divina haha. I love the keyboard arrangements on that album, especially the riff at the end of "Forhekset". That might be my favorite song these guys ever did, even more so than "Mother North". ? ...okay, gonna go listen to some early Satyricon now, thanks guys!
  5. I always thought Jonas Renkse's vocals on early Katatonia releases sounded pretty extreme/tortured, considering he destroyed his voice over them. Might not be quite what you're looking for, though. At least it's something other than black metal (despite how much they were clearly influenced by it...) I was also fucking impressed with Mgla's vocalist first time I heard them. But then again, for black metal it's par for the course. I can't really think of anything outside metal, either, but I too would love to hear some examples if anyone could provide them.
  6. It's so underrated. When I hear people talk about this album, the only songs they usually mention are Embers Fire and True Belief (both great songs) but in my opinion the entire first half of the album is what really shines. I love Forging Sympathy, Joys of Emptiness, and Dying Freedom as well. Also totally just realized where your username is from. Can't believe I didn't see it before hahaha.
  7. Paradise Lost - Icon I typically go right for Draconian Times but Icon has some great classics on it, even if it's sort of front-loaded and begins to drag halfway through. Love the guitar work. You can really hear that this is where the groundwork for Draconian Times was laid. Can't get enough of that clean tone on "Remembrance", damn.
  8. Some pictures from the cemeteries I visited today. Ugh, nevermind the files are too big. I'll try to post them if I can make them a smaller size.
  9. Thank you! Haha that would be awesome! I would love a war hammer. And also a war chariot so I could roll up to the office in style lol.
  10. Today is my birthday so, naturally, I'm visiting some cemeteries today and listening to all my favorite Norwegian black metal: Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times Satyricon - The Shadowthrone Satyricon - Nemesis Divina Might get around to listening to some Gorgoroth and 1349 too if I have time.
  11. Lol right??? Most of the people I hear bitching about it are the younger generation. Which really doesn't surprise me lol.
  12. Mayhem - Live in Leipzig Seriously, of all the people who bitch about the recording quality of this album, it's pretty standard fare if you're used to listening to bootlegs from the 90s. Sure, for anything other than a bootleg the quality is shit, but the performance completely makes up for it. Maybe it's the headphones, but I've always thought they sound fucking great here. So much raw power. "ARE YOU DEAD? HUH??"
  13. Haha yeah I figure, but I'm still dying to hear that rapid-fire heavy artillery in person, you know? And getting the chance to witness a black metal legend playing live in the flesh, of course. Haven't had too much luck seeing any of the real masters out here. ☹️
  14. Driving around with my 65-year-old father listening to Slayer, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral, and 1349. ?
  15. Depraved

    Witchcraft

Anyone else listen to this band? I just discovered them a few weeks ago, really like their take on doom. Kind of sounds old school yet new and innovative at the same time. ?
  16. Apparently finding out that Frost is not on the North American tour (AGAIN) with 1349 is the only thing that can really make me throw a tantrum at my age. Not that I'm surprised. Still woefully disappointed, though...I'm really beginning to give up on ever getting to see this man play live...
  17. Morning commute was rad: Katatonia - 12 Opeth - Godhead's Lament 1349 - Slaves
  18. Yes. That main riff from "Unchain My Soul" gets stuck in my head all the fucking time. Even if I haven't heard the song in a while.
  19. Probably some sort of ambient prog rock or something. I don't see anything they do in the future would be much different from their last few albums. Unfortunately I think it's nearing the end of the line for these guys as far as innovation (more like 3 albums ago) and I don't really see them doing anything terribly new or exciting again. I'm cool with that I guess. Stagnation is the final evolution of just about every band, I'm afraid.
