  1. I don't really listen to metal when I'm angry. Usually when I'm feeling pretty chill or melancholy. I'm more likely to listen to hardcore punk when I'm angry. Especially AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset. Honestly the angriest music I have ever heard. Never fails to make me feel better. And it's one of my favorite albums of all time. But I suppose for metal, Suicidal Tendencies is always a great choice as well.
  2. Hey there. I dislike (read ---> hate) facebook and twitter and whatever too. And I also love black metal and early doom and dislike most of the newer derivative genres. I'm kind of stuck in the 90s haha.
  3. Haha yeah I couldn't stop laughing. There are some killer riffs on that album though. I'm going to listen to his other material when I have time.
  4. All I could think was "if Maiden played black metal" haha. Especially "Under the Banner of the Sentinel". The vocals that come in right in the middle of that song are totally out of left field lol.
  5. I'm listening to Diabolical Masquerade Ravendusk in My Heart for the very first time ever out of curiosity because 1) Anders Nystrom (goes without saying) 2) The tracklist made me laugh Instrumentally it's no surprise given how phenomenal his work is with Katatonia but I'm fucking impressed with the vocals.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised by that. I personally don't mind a bit more melodic approach, although I kind of feel like the opening and closing riff were kind of just tacked on to make the song more...I don't know...palatable? I guess what's important to me is that they still maintain their signature despite the more melodic (dare I say progressive?) aspects, because nearly all of my favorite bands have thrown away what made them unique in order to "evolve" into a generic sound. This makes me even more curious about what the new album is going to sound like, in any case. I don't think I could pick a favorite album from them. It's true they don't really tread any new ground as far as the genre in question, and I probably like them a bit more than I would otherwise simply because Frost is behind the kit. I guess if I had to pick a favorite, maybe Hellfire? That being said, I believe this band is very much an acquired taste. The first time I ever heard any of their material it was almost unlistenable, if that makes any sense. But I became enamored with their sound and couldn't stop listening and now they're one of my favorite current black metal outfits. I remember hearing Liberation for the first time and I immediately imagined Dante's Inferno or something, the atmosphere was just incredible. Also I've been dying to see these guys live for years and have never gotten the chance. From the videos I've seen they put on one hell of a live show (pun intended?)
  7. Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town Boston - Peace of Mind ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin' Billy Idol - Rebel Yell Judas Priest - You've Got Another Thing Comin' Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart Warlock - All We Are Motley Crue - Looks That Kill Suicidal Tendencies - The Feeling's Back WASP - Cries in the Night But this is my work playlist, so no extreme metal.

I think it's a crime this band doesn't have its own thread yet, so I'm starting one. Anyone else hear the new single? I've been waiting rather impatiently for these guys to put something new out and this doesn't disappoint. It's better than I was expecting it to be and I'm happy the production isn't an ultra compressed wall of indistinguishable sound that like 99.9% of bands are doing nowadays. This is by far the most excited I've been about new music in 3 or 4 years at least. Can't wait to hear the new album.
  9. I know this thread is old as hell but I can't believe no one has mentioned Turisas - Battle Metal yet. It's a folk metal masterpiece. The Varangian Way is brilliant as well. I don't listen to folk metal all that much. 90% of the time it annoys me. The other 10% of the time I hear its beauty and genius and I wonder why I don't listen to it more often. Finntroll, Turisas, and Korpiklaani are essential in my opinion. There are other great bands from elsewhere in Europe of course, but the Finns rule this genre.
  10. I like classical music. I don't listen to it all the time of course, but I like it for some moods and situations. Usually when I want to enjoy a quiet evening or when I need to focus on something, like studying. I like French composers, especially Debussy and Satie, and Russian composers. Most metal fans I've spoken to like classical music as well. I believe it's probably to the complexity and emotion in both types of music. Just like classical music, metal is music for intelligent people, in my opinion.
  11. He was the leader of the tour and also a history professor at one of the universities here. XD
  12. I wish!!! I'm almost 30! And yes, that picture in the photo thread was taken only a few days ago. Although it's true I got into the band a few years later, but I always listen to earlier albums first and then travel chronologically through the catalogue. I do that with all bands. So I suppose you could take my comment to mean chronologically rather than in real time, as they had already released Host and Believe in Nothing by then. I just hadn't heard them yet. Yeah I noticed that too after a few days of stalking the boards. In which case your taste in music is fucking excellent in my opinion!
  13. Ha yeah, when I first heard it I was like "what is this shit?" and for a moment I thought it was a different band. I don't hate it as much as I did when it was first released, but I ask myself if I'm going to listen to Satyricon, why on earth would I choose that album? Pretty much all the songs bore me, with the exception of "Phoenix", but that almost sounds like Satyricon trying to be a cover band... Deep Calleth Upon Deep I thought was better, but it's not really the sort of thing I'd sit down and listen to. Maybe to just have playing in the background, but when I listen to music I really like to listen to it, without really doing anything else. I really like "To Your Brethren in the Dark" though. The main riff feels very haunting and I love the lyrics. But yeah, if I want me some Satyricon it's going to be one of the first three albums 99% of the time.
  14. Yeah I love that poem. It's one of my favorites. I'm not all that familiar with Arcturus but I have a long list of bands/albums I want to listen to.
  15. I feel this way all the time too. Except I have no family and only one friend and she lives on the other side of the world. I often feel like I'm a different species from other people because they don't understand me and I don't understand them. I find most people to be very shallow and selfish, they seem incapable of any sort of critical thinking and they think nothing of stepping on other people to achieve their own ambitions or satisfy their own desires. It's like a rampant narcissism plus extreme stupidity, and I find people's behavior toward others very disturbing on a daily basis. I have PTSD from growing up in an extremely abusive home, and so people don't understand the way I am, and if I try to explain I usually get bashed for being "crazy" too so there's just no point. My experiences have made it so I view the world very differently from most people, and the accepted way of things, and if I share my perspective with anyone I get told I have a shitty attitude or I'm a horrible person or whatever. So around strangers I am very withdrawn, and I don't like getting close to people. People think I'm really weird and strange and they talk about me behind my back (or sometimes right in front of my face!) that I'm bizarre or a freak and stuff like that... I've been able to make a few simple but important connections with like-minded people, though. There's really no way to predict how and when that will happen; each time I met someone like this it was by complete accident. I feel like the less contact I have with people, the better. That being said, I do have some quotes from some of my favorite musicians which have helped me feel less alienated, which I can share with you. [Translated] "I was always the guy who felt different and like an outsider. I felt that other people had a connection with each other - but I was never a part of that." - Frost "When you look and think different, it brings out the worst in some people." - Nikki Sixx Maybe you're not quite as alone as you might think.
  16. That's cool. I live in an area that has a lot of Civil War history so there's quite a lot of old cemeteries and monuments and stuff here. There was actually a mass grave where they said something like three dozen soldiers were buried. I've never seen anything like that before.
  17. Opeth was actually the band that really got me into metal in the first place. I was 15 I think when I heard "Patterns in the Ivy" and I was intrigued. I picked up Blackwater Park, and the rest is history, as they say. Their Candlelight stuff is great. Orchid has some of the most beautiful and memorable riffs of any album in my opinion, and it's my favorite from them despite the unorthodox songwriting. I also love Still Life, though I still can't follow the supposed concept. I personally can't stand anything after Ghost Reveries.
  18. Yeah, I'm a little girl. Shut up. XD I went stomping around this old cemetery last night. A lot of graves were from the 19th century. There was a tour as well but sadly most of my pictures are way too dark to see anything.
  19. Yeah, Rain Without End is great. I like some of their other stuff too, even though it's more progressive. A Thin Shell is a rather nice album.
  20. Yeah, same for me. I like Discouraged Ones but it's pretty obvious Renkse wasn't used to using his singing voice and I find the performance rather shaky. Nothing can beat their first two albums for me though, For Funerals to Come and Sounds of Decay. That shit is gold in my book, musicianship be damned.
