    IMMORTAL

Who else here absolutely loves the drum production and performance on Immortal’s seminal soundtrack “Pure Holocaust”? The subtleties of technique displayed, along with the way in which the overall mix allows for such percussive showcasing, make this album an indispensable pleasure when one is craving some substantive drumming.
  4. Spiritual Healing is at least worth mentioning, both the song and the album!
  5. Yeah, the closet thing I can think of is Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ Constipation Blues lol.
  6. Thank you for the examples so far! I imagine most will be black metal vocals—or some derivation thereof—but, out of curiosity, does anyone know of tortured vocals in other, more distantly related sub-genres or even in another genre altogether, possibly before the advent of metal?
  7. What are your favourite vocals that sound tortured? I just recently discovered Austere‘s “Withering Illusions and Desolation” wherein the singer sounds like someone being tortured to death, for example, and these are already a favourite of mine.
  8. Thanks for the question, Balor. The self-titled debut is best imo. It goes without saying that the album presents a powerful atmosphere for the listener; however, the guitar sound and vocal production specifically are transcendental. (Ergo, the worst album is “From the Depths of Darkness” because it replaces both.) A close second for me is either “Filosofem” for similar reasons, along with its beautiful artwork, or “Det som engang var” for the dark grandeur of its storytelling and sound (which his worst album also replaces and ruins.) I’m also curiously fond of select synth pieces by Burzum such as Illa tiðandi from “Dauði Baldrs”, though the album as a whole is unexciting. What are your thoughts on Burzum’s discography?
  9. Lyrics are what separate the Beatles from the Rolling Stones. The former clearly surpass the latter in this respect. (Obviously not on every individual song, but overall when one considers their respective discographies.)
  10. themusicofthehermit.bandcamp.com The Hermit is a lone wolf musical project based in Lethbridge, Canada. His recent digital release “Enclosed Exposure” is self-described as Nintendo Black Metal due to its nostalgic simplicity of sound. Best listened to with headphones.
  11. Greetings all! My name is Bruce. I’m a longtime metal head whose favourite band is Black Sabbath. Lately, I’ve been listening mostly to black metal bands such as Burzum & Gorgoroth. Looking forward to discovering some more metal here.
