If I didn't have kids I probably wouldn't do anything for Christmas either. They're usually not home for the day of,  but I try and be festive otherwise.

I listened to 'The Hourglass' by Atten Ash just today for that purpose and it worked really well. It's also excellent doom besides.

I think the "popular contributors" thing has to do with how many "horns up" people get. I don't see that field on my phone, but I noticed it on the desktop version. New bells and whistles with the new look, you see.

For those who have never heard funeral doom, but are curious as to what it's all about, here are some general characteristics of the genre. I can tell you that it's not for everyone... - Very slow, heavy music; with few "riffs". Relies more on chording or a few riffs to eventually build into a soundscape. - Snail-slow drums with sparse fills; traditional drums are often replaced with timpani (Skepticism does this frequently) - Almost always employs keyboards or organ. - Vocals are usually guttural, almost to the point of being indecipherable; often sound pitch-shifted; will also employ chanting or spoken verse - Lyrics are as sparse as the music; often not following traditional song structure at all - Songs usually clock in at anywhere between 8 to 14 minutes, and are often intentionally repetitive Very quickly, funeral doom unofficially "began" with the recordings of the Finnish band Thergothon in the early 1990s. The production was horrendous; the songwriting, stellar. From here, a number of bands emerged. Skepticism, another Finnish act, would follow in the vein of Thergothon. Esoteric, out of the UK, would release some very essential work as well. diSEMBOWELMENT would mix the "funeral doom" pace with grindcore and ambient/world music. Funeral doom peaked in the early 2000s, with the release of Shape of Despair's "Angels of Distress" -- often held up as the gold standard of the style. Finland is considered the "nexus" of this style of doom. I was having wicked vivid dreams all last week that I was involved in another crash on my tandem bike going downhill because we were in a hurry to catch my brother racing at the track. Here's where it gets freaky...Sunday morning my pilot told me he wanted to catch my brother's race so we'd ride out, climb a hill near there, and get to the track around 9am. We crest the hill and I instantly get goosebumps and a really bad feeling. We are NOT the type to hold back on a descent - he loves to go downhill fast and so do I so when I say we should be cautious he knows something is up.
 
Want to know what really freaked me out though? When my pilot told me a car had crossed onto the wrong side of the road at a corner, a corner which we would have been taking at exactly the same time any other day.

I like painting, but there's no way we would even be able to paint our apartment if we wanted to. The wife and kid and I are crammed into a two-bedroom that she rented for herself when she moved to the city. Home improvement will have to wait.
