Alright, I have to say "Surgical Steel" is growing on me. A few listens in, I'm enjoying it. I like it better than Heartwork, though that's not saying much...

As far as rants go, I have to walk six miles with my kid to get the kind of diapers we need today, because we couldn't order them, so now we're out of diapers, and they don't sell them in my neighborhood, but my wife is at work, and the stroller is in the trunk of her car, so it'll have to be a back carrier, and ever since I hurt my knee, carrying him in this thing SUCKS, but I don't really have a choice, so off we go. Sorry but I couldn't think of anything else to whine about. It's not actually that bad.

No ORCumentary tattoo? Probably a good move honestly, I've considered getting band tattoos before and I'm always glad I didn't at some point. Though the orc face would have been kinda badass.

A lot of bands fall apart for me live. I've been bored to the point of leaving the show by Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Nile, Cradle Of Filth, Arsis, Insomnium, Rotting Christ... eh... some others I forgot. By contrast I'm always blown away by Opeth and Enslaved, and Type O Negative and Isis put on some unforgettable performances as well. I've always heard great things about Meshuggah and Necrophagist live, and I'd really enjoy having a chance to see them. Seeing a band really pull it off in a live setting has always given me a lot more enthusiasm for their studio recordings.

Fucking hilarious. Not sure if I get some of the other comments, though, like "my poo poo pee pee butthole". IMO it's been almost 19 years since they put out a good album.

What amp are you using? My personal favorite pickups, depending on the guitar, are my Bareknuckle Cold Sweat, the Gibson 498 (came stock in my Explorer but I transferred it to the Steinberger), and the Seymour Duncan Invader, which is a little hot for some amps but sounds tough as nails. I've tried even higher-output passive pickups but they overload my amp and offer neither clarity nor volume (counterintuitive, I know). The only place I like active pickups is in a bass, for recording. I still have my EMGs laying around somewhere, but I will never use them. If you weren't all the way around the planet, I'd give 'em to ya.

An inauspicious beginning.

Some of it I like. Some of it I really despise. Modern metal production just irks me. The sound quality is so fake these days, every guitarist and vocalist seems to have the same tone. It's all ultra brutal heavy blah blah blah. I'm experiencing a weird paradox where I'm finding it easier to respect bands (like Periphery) whose music I intensely dislike, simply because they're pushing their own boundaries, than some really "heavy" bands (like Allegaeon) who, from what I've heard, are just regurgitating cliches. So I'm really grateful to BAN for introducing me to Demilich and Lykathea Aflame, because those albums are unique treasures, maybe on par with some others like Gorguts' "Obscura" or Suffocation's "Pierced From Within". I've said before, I'm a curmudgeon and I know it. I bet I'd like more modern stuff if it wasn't produced to the nines. A little bit off-topic... maybe it belongs in the rant thread.

It's funny... this is how I feel about most tech-death, deathcore, and so-called "djent" bands. I keep wanting to be excited and I keep feeling disappointed.
