Abyssal - Denoument
I love the riffs on this. The guitar work is brilliant (reminiscent of Ulcerate). My first impression is that it's a more enjoyable listen than Novit Enim Dominus Qui Sunt Eius, but it lacks a bit of the depth of that album. The fuzzy guitar tone is great, and maybe a bit more clear on this album; I wish the vocals were similarly prominent.
I'm not fond of the incessant vocal doubling, and I'm almost entirely sure the drums are programmed - on such a "dirty" recording, they stick out as fake-sounding. (I don't have a problem with the use of programmed drums, but in this case too many of the snare and cymbal hits, and tom fills, are identical. This isn't mechanical music, so the aesthetic doesn't match up and it feels a bit lazy as a result.) These production choices detract from the atmosphere of the album for me, even though I think I prefer the drier and more direct tone of this recording to the overtly "drowned" tone of the follow-up. Overall, though, I'm really liking this even on first listen. This band is one of my favorite recent discoveries.
