Joy Division/Unknown Pleasures-back in college when I was working with a fledgling Shakespeare troupe, my friend fellow Shakespearean cast member, Steve Barney (RIP) who was into alternative rock and punk and such lent me a Joy Division tape he thought I might like knowing I liked metal.
I always knew this was an influential album but never really delved into the backstory. The CD I bought a few years ago has a second live CD with the same tracks for the most part and is very good, sonically. It's actually a good live rendering of the studeio tracks.
I read the liner notes for the first time and it talks about how raw the band was live and how the producer was difficult to work with and treated the band like children. Some of the members hated the album's production initially even going so far as to say it made them sound like Pink Floyd (which it certainly does not). In retrospect, the the surviving members all seem to agree the production choices were a masterstroke despite him being a control freak. The band felt manipulated but the collaboration resulted in an iconic piece of music.
Now, years later, I understand why Steve wanted me to listen to one of his favorite bands. Steve was a very intelligent and interesting character-lanky, quirky, fun loving, compassionate dude with long curly hair-he looked like a rock'n'roll Gollum. He waved his freak flag proud.
We maintained our friendship when we both moved to the DC/Baltimore area. He got married, cut his hair and became a civic engineer. He was so creative, often writing scripts and producing theater and continued to perform until the end of his life whereas I moved on with my extra curriculars . He was a kind man who was loved by everyone he knew. Sadly, he passed from cancer a few years ago. Steve was one of of those unique and special individuals who touch your life and pass on through the unknowable looking glass, proving the good often die young.
But he must have realized back in the 80's that the dark, slow burn, seething sounds of Unknown Pleasures,  teetering on loss of control and madness was metal adjacent. The university of Google informs me it influenced  diverse  metal artists including Tom Warrior and Neurosis.
It must have been an influence on post metal and sludge, metal genres that were years from being born. The companion disc catches the way the band  must have sounded live,  whereas the producer felt that a studio album shouldn't simply replicate the band in a live setting. One of the great rock albums of all time.

I love Raging Slab. Legend has it the husband and wife guitar team of Greg Strzempka and Elyse Steinman met on the streets of NYC in 1983 (10th & 3rd) and discovered they had a lot of common musical influences including 70's hard rock as well as punk bands like Ramones, Iggy Pop and Black Flag. So of course they formed a southern flavored hard rock boogie band. Not sure where they were originally from, I've read Pennsylvania and I've read Washington DC but I don't know if either of those are true.
They got signed in the late 80's when record companies were all searching for an east coast GnR. But after their self titled major label debut they had a rough go of it with their record companies. They were stuck between the hair band era and grunge, but fit in with either. They had 2 albums rejected by RCA and then they put one out on Def Jam American who then refused to release their next one because they couldn't see any commercial potential. The band didn't want to make hit singles or repeat themselves making the same album over and over again, they wanterd to be quirky so they stubbornly stuck to their guns and their relationship with DJA atrophied, but they weren't ever officially released from their contract so they had to wait it out and could not release anything for the next 7 years. They never really recovered from that. Now they're just an obscure band from 30 years ago with a small dedicated cult following.

Besides being a fan of 70's hard rock and punk and southern boogie, the other reason I feel a connection to Raging Slab is like me Greg and Elyse were born in 1961, and like my wife Elyse succumbed to cancer in 2017.
You said you'd like to see more "Slab" related names, you might be amused to learn they did have a private home recording studio which they dubbed "Slabby Road."

Doc being more animated than I've ever seen him. Think I might even be willing to believe he's a real person.
Wish these other Aussie blokes would stop baiting our poor beleaguered Doctor though. It's bad enough his scrappy Eels haven't won a cup in 50 years, as a NY sports fan I know how that feels.
And besides, I'm the master baiter around here, so if anyone's gonna be baiting the good doctor it should be me. Just don't drop the soap Doc! 😉 Badum-bump.

Finally back home in New England. Great to see my folks. My mom made some clay pumpkins for everyone to carve, which she'll fire for Halloween, and she also worked on a chess set with me for my son the monster. Listened to some music, ate some real BBQ, drove through seemingly endless countryside, had good mead. The drive back was horrendous but the visit was worth it.
