Great insight, there. I also think "From Wisdom to Hate" could have used some more of that chaotic vibe which characterized much of "Obscura".

Mortician- "Mortal Massacre"
Two things that will always stay with me, regarding this EP:
1) 12 and 1/2 minutes. I've had times taking a number 2 that were longer than that, and yet they established the perfect brutal death metal sound in that short time. 
2) 1991. It is ridiculous how heavy this is for it's time. The only bands who were around at the time that I'd put on this scale of utter crushing aural assault are Blasphemy and Sarcófago, and of course Sarcófago was already done with the ultra heavy stuff. 

Judas Iscariot - Heaven In Flames

Australis - Spaces Of Hope   ...really solid, not overly polished tech death. Nods to Martyr and Death, but definitely in their own lane.
Sutrah - Aletheia   ...more modern melo-tech with impressive riffing and atmospheric elements. Nice development from their previous.

Gorguts - From Wisdom to Hate
On the notes in the CD booklet, Lemay describes this record as one he is very proud of.  
"We were able to maintain the musical vocabulary and aesthetic found on 'Obscura' but in a less abrasive and chaotic way...Now, with a step back, it seems to me that 'From Wisdom to Hate' would have been a more natural and logical progression to 'Erosion Of Sanity'"
I agree with him on the less abrasive front, but to be honest I kind of wanted a bit more of that on this record.  Compositionally it does start to lay groundwork for Colored Sands I can hear but I often used to debate that this should have been, as Lemay describes above, the album between the sophomore and Obscura.  I think whichever album came after Obscura was going to be a step down in terms of that chaos that Luc alludes to in his notes.  Some how though if history had been different and Colored Sands ended up following Obscura I still would have loved both records.

Limbonic Art - Moon In The Scorpio

I think Luc was more interested in cohesive songwriting and Steeve Hurdle was the force behind a lot of the chaos and texture. If you haven't heard the self-titled Negativa EP you should check it out, it's not as disciplined as anything Gorguts did but it's a look at what could have been.
 

Yep, yet to get to Negativa.  Cheers for the link.  I am writing a discography piece for Gorguts for inclusion wherever on the internet I deem suitable, need flesh out some paragraphs on the debut and Pleiades' Dust then hoping to get it out in August.  Since Colored Sands I have been hooked on this band I have to admit and I have been playing catch up on their discography to the point where I just need the debut on CD (although not the $275 offering the guy on Discogs wants) to complete the collection.

Hi, everyone. I'm Lia. Glad to be here and meet other like-minded people who love music/metal as much as I do!  Have listened to hard rock/metal pretty much my whole life. I love most genres of metal, but I prefer gothic, doom (especially funeral doom), melodic, and folk. Stoner metal like Electric Wizard is amazing as well. Some of my top favorite bands are Type O Negative, Swallow The Sun, Trees of Eternity, Mournful Congregation, Funeral Mourning, Abyssmal Sorrow, Paradise Lost,  Insomnium, Slumber, Soilwork, Draconian,  and Eluveitie. I also love bands like Death, Darkthrone, and Bathory. There are so many though and I'm always looking for new artists to listen to.
A bit about myself - I'm in love with all forms of art and dabble in photography & collage. Introvert. Music-obsessed. I love the outdoors; nature is my sanctuary. Also love traveling and exploring new places when I can, especially anywhere where there's good food, wonderful architecture, and history. Also enjoy horror films and all things spooky.
