Re: Now...?

Listening to more Vanden Plas, working on a speech. Hopefully I'll see my parents this weekend and get some of this work out of the way. *EDIT* Oh great, the lyrics suck. Now I've got Symphony X on.
Symphony X and Iced Earth are coming to my town early next year. I'm so not going.

Ingrate. :D Sounds cool, to be honest. I might just see if I can go to the Denver gig. Apparently they'll be at a show with Nevermore in Anaheim, CA on Feb 21st. Now THAT could be awesome. I say could because I don't know what Nevermore will be performing... Well, still reading and waiting for lunchtime.

Snob. :D If I was given a ticked I'd go to see Symphony X. IE is so boring live! If Nevermore actually continues I'd be surprised.

Oh, I don't care less about Iced Earth. They're good but I'm not a fan. Actually, it doesn't seem like there's a Nevermore show in the works...the ticket site lied.

Thinking - I hate talking to people who grew up speaking English yet manage to slaughter it with gleeful abandon.
 I hear ye. It's especially irritating when there's someone who has all English ancestry and has about 3-4 generations of people in this state and STILL can't speak the darn language. Because then it's just sad when you're listening to a Czech or Dutch person speak fantastic English and then apologize profusely because they think they're butchering it. The typical diction, elocution and vocabulary REALLY sucks out here. Anyhow, just finished listening to old HammerFall and thinking about how much better it is than new HammerFall. I sorted out some paperwork finagling today so that's nice. There's also a new Nostalgia Critic up, so my evening ought to be nice. :P

Re: Now...?

Thinking - I'm beyond tired of the entitled attitude of everyone in this country.
The results of social democracy and leftist thinking. Both tend to relive people of the sense that they are responsible for themselves. Instead, they delegate that task to the government. They divert blame to easily stigmatized outside factors, such as 'society', 'culture', 'mass media', 'corporations' to make absolutely sure that they never have to blame themselves for their problems. They want accountability as long as only others are held accountable. Write a metal album about it! :) Listening to Before The Dawn just now, and I'll soon be watching Big Bang Theory.

After my own heart. :D I'd have no trouble writing a politically charged album, or twelve. I just don't believe in mixing music with politics. I'm all for reality in music, I just don't like hearing the bands platform because they're always misguided. Eating - Nothing Drinking - Water Listening - Wijlen Wij Doing - Working Thinking - Happy that I got the new MDB EP last night AND the final part of my birthday gift. The first Ablaze in Hatred CD. Tomorrow is Veterans day so I've got a four day weekend ahead of me. Today will drag....

Re: Now...? What do you mean by misguided..? Anyhow, I'm busy watching Law & Order SVU and drinking Gatorade. Looking forward to a good night's sleep. My teacher thought the research I did for my talk was good and he thought the solutions I offered to Hutu-Tutsi partisan violence were cogent. So, all in all a nice day. :)

Re: Now...? I don't think mixing music with politics is a good idea neither. Except punk of course :) But not metal. Eating - sandwich Drinking - coffee Listening - children's program The Magic Roundabout Doing - browse these sites, what's up Thinking - how great music they make for children's programs too. My daughter sometimes find that the music in some program is funny or scary. Glad that she doesn't just watch but listens also.

Re: Now...? Nah, I think politics in metal is perfectly acceptable. If Cannibal Corpse is allowed to make a song about disemboweling someone, then I hardly think politics ranks as a controversial topic. Besides, punk only ever presents one side of the spectrum: HARD LEFT. And it presents it very poorly at that. I'm busy sitting through Two and A Half Men so that I can watch Family Guy.

I'm also debating on if I want to see Cynic tomorrow. $18 isn't a bad price but the opening bands are all of the core/douche variety. Decisions, decisions.

Re: Now...? I agree with you Iceni, personally I like metal that has a political agenda, part of the reason I like Megadeth so much, but if the band is doing it just to try and get popular I don't like it, lyrics should be personal so if you don't feel strongly about a political issue you shouldn't write about it, anyway I get the feeling that i've gone way off topic (haven't read the rules for this thread yet so maybe I haven't) but right now where I live it's 2am and i'm wondering why i'm still awake

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
