35 years later, I still remember the very first time I put the And Justice for All CD on my turntable.
At the time, I was really into Thrash and listened a lot to the first 3 Metallica albums.
I was expecting the same order of songwriting as on the previous 2 albums and I wasn't surprised here: a kick-ass opening track, followed by the eponymous title track, a really heavy track, a slow song and so on.
But it was the sound that surprised me as soon as Lars started Blackened. I found it creepy, especially the sound of the snare drum, which I found 'synthetic'. Throughout the album, I felt a sense of unease.
It took me a long time to appreciate AJFA and I've always preferred its predecessors.

It did evolve, but not at the pace of what it was doing in 1980-90s.  
I do think it's rate of evolution has completely slowed down in last 10-15 years.  It's last major growth spurt was early-mid 2000s but even that didn't top 1980-90s.

I had lots of friends who were big into Korn at the time so we watched lots of their videos and listened to their albums whilst drinking beer and smoking bongs.   Other common stuff was Marilyn Manson, Roots era Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Motley Crue, Skid Row and random other popular big name acts.
Personally I can't stand Korn's music and I did try but my friends didn't do Slayer, Megadeth or early Sepultura and you couldn't find anything heavier or more obscure in local shops.!
As for child abuse, the 1990s were the time for people calling out chid abuse to the point South Park took the piss out of it because it seemed anyone popular had an abuse story.  Not saying what happened to Jonathon Davis wasn't terrible but merely that it was part of the overall social gestalt of the time (kind of like 1980s thrash singing about WWIII and nuclear annihilation which was very much a hot topic back then).
I find it abhorrent that Korn ended up using child abuse as a marketing gimmick as nearly every single one of their album covers insinuates child abuse.
 
One of their best releases despite being all covers!
