Thanks dude, I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm in a similar field, dealing with fewer, but larger shipments and a larger area, as opposed to a bunch of small shipments on a local scale. I'm also working with a great bunch of professionals for better pay with less hours, and my boss is one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever met. Needless to say, the last job coming to an end might have been one of the biggest blessings in disguise of my whole life.

Try their first 4 albums from when they were a doom/death band. That's when they were at their best IMO, but you could also try The Pale Haunt Departure. It's the start of that sound you hear from The Novella Reservoir onward, but it works pretty well on that album, giving me an Opeth vibe at times. I love his clean vocals, my problem is with the lyrics. I can appreciate how honest and sincere they sound, but they are very cheesy as has already been pointed out. The problem with his growls being so clear and intelligible is that you can't ignore the bad lyrics in the harsh sections either. Still, they brought plenty to the table that is worth hearing early on, despite a few drawbacks. Everyone knows that Avernus are the true Chicago doom/death greats though... [emoji41]

That term gets bandied around as an excuse to be needlessly "retro". It often ends up just acting as a placeholder, but having no actual merit, in much the same way that watered down melodeath riffs sound awkward and wrong on melodic metalcore albums. People need to stop treating metal like a gimmick and just fucking put themselves into it, all of this pandering retro shit is about pleasing fans with a throwback facade as opposed to fostering creativity in the direction of the music.

Yep. That's definitely not my favorite part of the band either, but douchey, xenophobic retards are ubiquitous in the metal scene. I've always stated that I don't view it as something to dismiss a band over, as I don't know of many bands I like that actually share my views one way or another, but it's not as though I'm out to make friends with all of these people either.

That debut and Ophidian Wheel are my favorites from them. The Paradise Lost melodies mixed with their brutality and atmosphere make for an incredible listen.

Frank Zappa is a badass, he fucking destroyed them, and continued to make them look foolish by releasing the only instrumental album to feature a Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics sticker on the cover due to their promise to put them on all of his releases. Dee Snider was a decent vocalist and I do like a few songs on Under the Blade, some that even qualify as metal. The problem that I have with Dee is the same problem that I have with Gene Simmons. They're both self important douchebags that think everyone wants (and needs to) hear what they have to say because they were god's gift to heavy metal, even though both were metal adjacent with a small amount of influence at best, and their bands focused more on marketing and image than making good music.

I feel like the riffs are one of the low points of the album. That said, I do agree that it does have a lot going on and it represents a lot of voices very well, and could easily be called their best orchestrated album. Everything but the guitars were on point, and it was pretty creative.
