Read, discuss, post your own lists, and enjoy, or if you think it's stupid, don't read it.

Members of Metal Forum, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!
We all know rules are boring, but ask yourselves, what's a tyrannical dictatorship without rules? Chaos. And that simply won't do, because we mods rule with an iron fist!
Please speak English in these forums.
Breaking the rules will result in a caution and thread-lock.
Repeat offenses will be met with a permanent ban. You have been warned.
    Strict guidelines:-
DO NOT post racist, sexist or homophobic remarks. DO NOT bully other users or make physical threats. DO NOT post links to or discuss illegal downloads. DO NOT disseminate other users' personal information. DO NOT post pornographic material (or anything that could be seen as such). DO NOT post spam. DO NOT advertise services or products for sale (unless given permission). General tips:-
Be civil and polite to other users, even when you really disagree with them! Mutual respect is important. Do not create huge signatures with lines of images. It means more scrolling, and that's not fair on our poor mouse wheels and trackpads. If your sig is any bigger than the one on this post, it's too big. If your sig disappears, it was deleted for being too big. If you repost it, you'll annoy other users and the mods. This will result in an eSlap. If a thread is clearly going to be locked, don't spam it with remarks like "This thread is going to be locked". You're just bumping a crappy thread. If you're not sure where something should go, post it in General Chat. You aren't a moderator, and acting like one isn't cool. You can swear all you like, but targeting abuse at an individual will be treated as bullying. Try to keep Rick-rolling to a minimum. Make your thread titles relevant to the content. Search the forums before posting news articles to cut down on copypasta. If you want a thread to be stickied, include "Sticky please" in the title. If it doesn't get stickied, it isn't worthy. Deal with it. If you feel your thread is NSFW, warn people in the title. Think before you do anything illegal. We will work with the authorities for great justice. Generally being excessively crude, irritating or attempting to troll for lulz may get you banned at the discretion of the moderators. Respect their decisions, they are only enforcing the rules. You can appeal a ban, but we will be checking logs to assess your offence, so don't try to lie about it. If you have any issues or suggestions, there is a place for them here. If you have any questions about the forums, post them in this thread but please, read the FAQs first!

I discovered a great all female Death Metal band from New York called "Castrator". Check them out if you get a chance!  Dramaticmeow, i understand what you are saying about why there is not many all females bands in metal.  Truly get it.  What's more shocking is the kind of questions guys ask you like you posted above.
I've never ever asked female bands those things or would i even think of it, and i have talked to a few at least!

    Welcome to the forum Erin.
It is certainly true that matriarchal cultures are relatively few in number. My question is why do you think that the overwhelming majority of cultures on this planet have developed as patriarchal? Do you think it was just random coincidence or might there have been a multitude of reasons for this? I think a lot of people look at our lives now in modern western 1st world society and forget that for thousands of years life was nothing like we see it today. Up until the 20th century human beings in general male and female alike had a very difficult time just trying to survive, put food on the table and a roof over their heads and navigate their way through life.
It's only within the last 100 years or so that society and technology and infrastructure have advanced to the point where most people's lives have gotten realtively easy now. We take so much for granted now in the 21st century that people even 75 years ago wouldn't have ever dreamed possible. And so now that we've gotten to this point it's natural to question the patriarchy because many of the reasons that societies developed as patriarchal 2,000 years ago are no longer relevant. And that's fine, I'm all for women having equal rights and equal opportunities and equal power and a seat at the table and all that kinda thing, and I think most people these days would agree. Outside of certain physical feats of strength where men have the edge, I don't think there's anything women can't do anymore and do quite well if they're so inclined.
But I don't think you can expect people's attitudes that could enable this kind of profound societal overhaul to change overnight. Certain jobs and certain activities and hobbies and interests are always going to be dominated by men. Not because we're keeping women out, but because whether it's due to nature or nurture or something else entirely, clearly women and men have shown distinctly different tendencies when they're choosing things like careers and hobbies and interests. There will always be exceptions though, men who like traditionlly female things and women who enjoy traditionally male things. Clearly there are many women who do enjoy listening to and playing what's traditionally been the male dominated diversion of heavy metal. I think at least anecdotally, almost all the male metalheads I talk to think it's absolutely fantastic to have more women participate and contribute to heavy metal both from the musician side and from the fan side. I'm not saying that misogyny doesn't exist in the metal world because I think we all know that it does. But I do think attitudes have changed a lot over the last 40 years and while I admit that I could be wrong, I don't see misogyny in the metal world as being as universally pervasive as it used to be and some people claim it still is.

Pretty sure we've had this discussion in a couple of threads on here before. Interesting topic, though.
Being female, I can tell you that it's extremely difficult to find other women who like metal (but I've always lived in the southern tier of the US, so I would imagine they might be easier to find elsewhere). Sure, there are certainly women who like metal, but we comprise such a small percentage of what is a massively male-dominated genre. I've never met another female metal fan "in the wild". When I go to concerts, the crowd is usually around 90% male. That number rises even more overwhelmingly with more extreme genres (black and death metal especially, in my experience). When I saw 1349 right before the pandemic, I recall seeing maybe 5 other women in the crowd (of about 300) other than myself. I've been to smaller shows where I was the only woman there.
But back to your question: no, I don't think metal is sexist, nor do I think it ever was (in general). There are bands who have expressed or at least alluded to having sexist opinions but as far as I know, they were always more the exception than the rule. Personally, I've never experienced any direct sexism from anyone at shows; in fact, many of the guys I've met whether they're band members or fans always seem both a little surprised and also happy that I've rescued them from a complete sausage fest lol. The rest seemed indifferent. I always go to shows alone and I've never been treated with anything other than respect despite looking very young and being very petite. I actually tend to feel safer at shows than in other random situations in public despite being surrounded by strange men. I've gotten followed, catcalled, harassed, threatened, and verbally attacked by dudes in ordinary places like the grocery store. That's never happened to me at a metal concert. The worst that's happened is I sometimes get stared at/gawked at, which can be very unnerving, mainly because I have no idea if they're planning to steal my wallet later.
Anyway, back to female metal bands. I think @blaaacdoommmmfan is somewhat correct, but only to a certain degree. You'll definitely find less female metal fans than female pop fans. But part of it I think is also because female metal fans tend to be more socially isolated, I think. For example, let's say there's a female guitarist who wants to join or start a metal band. She might have a guy friend who's into metal who also wants to start a band, but he probably knows several other men who have expressed an interest in starting a band together and have possibly jammed together, who might all be friends or have known each other for a long time, are probably closer and may already have really good chemistry. The woman, on the other hand, is highly unlikely to have enough female friends who are into the same music she is, are musicians themselves, and are interested in starting a band. It's unfortunate and sad, but that's reality.
Social conditioning is also a factor, for sure. Parents are more likely to enroll their daughter in piano, violin or voice lessons if she's interested in music, whereas boys seem to get to choose whatever instrument interests them. If they like any kind of rock music, that's probably going to be guitar or drums. I remember when I was a kid, I knew many girls at school who took music lessons. Only 2 of them were taking guitar lessons. One of them was a huge country fan. The other was into classic rock and her dad was a guitarist himself. The rest were overwhelmingly students of voice or piano. A few played flute, clarinet, or violin. As for boys I knew who were taking music lessons? Most of them were learning guitar. So it seems to kind of be this idea, perhaps, that many parents have, that certain instruments are more appropriate for girls to learn, and their interest is probably encouraged by music genres besides rock. Think about it. The rare instance you see a metal band with a female member, what music are they playing? If the band has a keyboard, that's usually what she's playing. Or she's the vocalist (in certain genres). If it's a folk metal band, there might be a woman playing the fiddle or another traditional instrument.
When I was in elementary (primary) school, my parents wanted me to learn piano. They strongly encouraged this by taking me to see classical pianists at the performing arts center, forcing me to get involved with our church community and the music director letting me play during services. That's mainly what I played - hymns. Later, I was allowed to take voice lessons, but it was sort of the same thing. I got to take voice lessons so I could sing in the choir at church. They encouraged the interest in music only through classical music, opera, and church music, despite what my own music interests were. Meanwhile, my male cousins got guitars for Christmas or for their birthday as soon as they expressed any interest in playing. I remember telling my mom when I was about 14 I didn't want to play piano anymore and I wanted to take guitar lessons instead, and she said something like "But I want you to continue with piano! You play so well! It makes you sophisticated!" I haven't gone near a piano in years and I can't remember much except the basics, although I would eventually like to start playing again, but for completely different reasons. I only sing in the shower or sometimes when I'm listening to Skid Row or Queensryche while cooking dinner (Sebastian Bach and Geoff Tate are very fun to imitate). Never got to take guitar lessons. I've been trying to teach myself, but it keeps getting derailed.
Sorry, this is turning into a long tangent, but maybe it can shed some light on your question. I think there are a few different factors that contribute to the lack of all-female metal bands, but I don't believe sexism is one of them. I certainly don't think metal is innately sexist.

I've called the cops on several occasions and they either never showed up or they did nothing.
In first instances there was a big loud domestic dispute at a neighbours where one person was threatening to shoot another.  The cops didn't turn up.  Luckily the neighbours managed to sort it themselves
In second instance, I could see two guys trashing the petrol station next door.  I called the cops and they never turned up.
Also called them for a burglary at one of our facilities.  Cop literally said it was a waste of time doing anything but took prints whilst fagging away and cigarette ash falling all over the area he was dusting!  He said he was there for insurance processes.
Oh and I know at least 3 drunk drivers they let go instead of charging - my brother, my best mate and myself..
My wife used to work in another part of the justice system in the magistrates court.  The cops were lazy - they sometimes didn't collect statements from witnesses for several months and they certainly didn't bother filling in paper work.  Apparently their KPI was number of charges laid, not convictions.

Cops are a waste of space and an illusion of security.  My dad said the cops are there to keep honest people honest and that's it.

    Exactly.
My wife has said the cops are especially nasty and unhelpful with victims of domestic violence if they're Asian women married to Australian men.  They apparently view them as mail order brides and gold diggers.

    Local cops really are pigs.
One of my wife's clients was scheduled to witness in a domestic violence case (she is the victim).
Two days before the court appearance, two men break into her house and beat her up so badly she ends up in hospital with internal injuries (though she is conscious).  As she is in hospital with serious injuries, she has missed her court appearance today.
The cops have not taken any statement from her and to make matters worse are now making rumblings that she will be arrested for failing to turn up to court!
This isn't the first time cops have been harassing domestic violence victims.  Not the first time they've not wanted to take statements.  My wife's been in police stations with the victims and watched the cops try to avoid taking statements.  She has to argue with them to take statements from her clients.
Cops are also violating court orders - they tried to arrest another victim due to an administrative error at the court even though they knew it was an administrative error (my wife pulled strings to have the court fix up the error and the head cop full on argued with my wife the cops were within their rights).

Again enforces my belief that cops are just thugs with badges.  Also goes to show that female rights are still not entrenched in the Australian justice system.

All beaurocratic systems are designed to obfuscate and limit transparency, accountability and responsibility. It's human nature. You can't have groups or agencies or institutions responsible for policing and regulating and disciplining themselves, it just doesn't work they're always going to let themselves off the hook.
As far as police corruption and bigotry is concerned I direct you to the novel/film Serpico from the 1970's. True story of an honest man who joined the force with the best intentions, just a regular guy who wanted to do a good job at being a cop. The corruption and bigotry was so ingrained within the institution of the NYPD that they made it virtually impossible for him to just mind his own business and do the right thing. They needed to indoctrinate all the new cops into being a part their corrupt system in order for them all to be able to stay safe and protected. He resisted and that's a problem they just can't allow, anyone who won't go along is a threat to their system. So of course they came after him hard and it got violent, they weren't taking no for an answer. He became an outcast in a job where you need that bond of brotherhood and you need your fellow officers to come and back you up in tense and dangerous situations. Most people just don't have the stones or the backbone to resist that kind of intense pressure and stick to their ideals. No one wants to be ostracized. People naturally want to belong and go along and become part of that brotherhood. So you can easily end up with a system where everyone is corrupt or at least is willing to look the other way and excuse their brothers' corruption which makes them corrupt as well.
Official statistics on corruption within any particular police force are essentially worthless because you're asking all the corrupt criminals to inform on themselves. Any official statistics are only going to reveal the tip of the iceberg. Obviously ALL cops aren't corrupt (probably) but corruption is like a disease that metastasizes and spreads. Once it gains a foothold it can become rampant and pervasive very easily.
Bigotry works in much the same way. People can be indoctrinated into thinking this way at a young age and by the time they're teenagers they'll just see it as normal. This is what all that talk the last decade or so about "institutional racism" is about. Individuals don't even have to go out of their way to be overtly racist and they might not even think of themselves as bigots because they might have just been indoctrinated into thinking it's totally normal to think and be that way toward certain groups of people since birth without even realizing it's wrong.
Deadovic made a comment the other day about how it seemed that 80's metal dudes were quite homophobic. I would suggest that simply reflects how society's general outlook on things was very different back then. It was very commonplace and still fairly acceptable to use racial and homosexual slurs back then 40 years ago, and certainly not just within the metal community. That's just how it was in 1984. And it's still pretty commonplace, people just realize it's not socially acceptable to say this kind of shit in public anymore so they'll censor themselves according to who they're with and who might be within earshot.
