  1. Yeah. Thanks but no thanks. As I know you'd expect, I don't need clowns like that to help guide my listening.
  2. Ed - fucking - Sheeran - the man devoid of groove/soul/call it what you will, played to 100,000 people then more than 100,000 the night after in Melbourne just now. My daughter - who torments me with Ed - fucking - Sheeran at every opportunity was over for dinner tonight and she and the wife went on about this and about how more than 200,000 people couldn't be wrong and that maybe my taste in music was just wrong. Of course I told then that they and the other 200,000 were the one who were wrong, but that didn't change their minds. Then I quoted Frank Zappa - 'Americans hate music, but they love the garni-de-jour' and the same for Australians. That did me no good either. So be it. I am still right. Metal heads are a tiny minority and I am grateful that music I love is being produced by men and women who will never have the commercial success of Ed - fucking -Sheeran, but they do it anyway because they love it. I am right about the evil of the golden point in Rugby League too and so many other things but I'll stop whining now. Goodnight.
  3. Still true, but you can't have everything.
  4. ENSLAVED - Heimdal. I found a lot more to interest me the second time through. 'Congelia' is an excellent track. NP - SALOLDELLI CASARANO BARDOSCIA - The Great Jazz Gig In The Sky. A loose jazz take on Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. Pretty cool.
  5. I only look down on the unworthy, and they are a self selected group.
  6. I have no further ambitions. I practiced as an independent medical specialist, I taught medical students, GPs and specialist trainees, I served on committees of my specialist college, I was an examiner, I did research, published academic papers, presented at a couple of international meetings, raised two children to be good human beings and successful professionals. Now I run, I walk, I garden, I listen to music, I write music, I read and sometimes I have a little think. And that's more than anyone here needs to know about Thatguy. I was a humble worker, serving the community all my working life. I was never a medical entrepreneur like yer mate.
  7. ENSLAVED - Heimdal. It's a nice album. Too much clean singing though and on one listen no standout songs. It's what I expected. Mind not blown. PoiL Ueda - PoiL Ueda. This is something very different. Japanese classical style singing over very restrained (no wankiness at all) prog rock music. Not many here will like it but it is something very special. HEY COLOSSUS - Dances/Curses. Finally gave this band a try. I was gardening and not giving it my full attention, but it plodded along and was not very engaging.
  8. You're right. I saw them at Hymns to the Dead in Hobart that year and I think it was their only Australian show in 2017. It sucks.
  9. Golden point is an abomination. No winner after 80 minutes of blood sweat and tears = a draw and it should be a point each. I will never change my mind. He looks uncomfortable. So does she.
  10. Of course, you are mainly dealing with psychiatrists I guess.
  11. I took my wife out for lunch. I'm about to hit Bandcamp. Sad because the Eels choked, panicked and lost their first game of the season last night. It wasn't the first time and won't be the last. Oh, and fuck youse all.
  12. Fuck the apostrophe and the horse it rode in on. New Enslaved tomorrow.
  13. MAKAYA MCCRAVEN - In These Times And don't forget, kiddies, the new Enslaved is out on Friday.
  14. It's good, I guess, that you get who I was mainly addressing.
  15. This has got very silly. I blame the Orca - for just about everything.
  16. FALLUJAH -Empyrean. Fuck youse all, it's a good album, and the last track especially put me in mind of the band I listened to next. MESHUGGAH - Immutable
  17. I have known that poem since I was a teenager worried about being drafted and marching in the Moratorium demonstrations in Sydney And I largely agree with you. But most of the 'anti-woke' people I come across (and I don't meet many - selection bias applies) just want to benefit as rudely from their privilege as they always have. People can dissent without being arseholes, but many chose not to. If I ruled the world I would cancel the term 'cancel culture', which is mainly used as a term of abuse. In the USA at least most book banning and banning of teaching of actual history comes from the fascists while they self-righteously whine about being cancelled. But this is true.
  18. I read one of the James Bond novels years and years ago. It were roobbish. It was so bad I can't even remember which one it was. Storm in a fucking tea cup, but let them sink without trace I say.
  19. Yeah, baby. Well we tried, Mark, and so did he.
  20. The algorithms get you. I get all sorts of irrelevant or offensive (to me) ads on my feeds. I am an enigma.
  21. I listened again just now while gardening. There are riffs galore. More riffs than your average doom metal album. The riffs are slowly evolving and distorted but they are there. I know 90% or more of people won't get it. Their loss.
  22. Yep. But fuck me I am sick and tired of the endless publicity this is giving RD's dreary books. Hated them then (when my kids were little); hate them now.
  23. I knew you'd say that. And that's fine. There are riffs though. Just not as you know them, Jim. And I do know the difference between Canadian and American. It was a typo for Americana.
  24. Bandcamp doesn't see them as metal either, but metal is a broad church to me and I think they fit. Nice analysis though. When I first heard them, I hated her voice, but she actually has a unique and deeply emotional style. I can't hear the American either.
