  1.  I'm a subscriber to metal 🔨 hammer magazine UK. When I started listening to metal again after I got married 😂 it was very useful in helping me find some good stuff to listen to as all my CDs were old metal. now I don't read it as much as I used to. Still enjoy all the historical stuff about metals famous bands including iron maiden, black Sabbath, judus priest, pantera etc. I still find the occasional good album from it.  The magazine went bust but thanks to orange goblins Mr ben ward👏👏👏👏👏 it survived with new owners. In short I'm enjoying and subscribing while it lasts

When I was just getting into extreme metal, I met some random kid in the parking lot of a strip mall that was into that sort of thing. We chatted, and he told me about a bunch of cool bands. That was cool, but here's the weird part: he told me that there was a black metal band called Vlad Tepes that recorded one demo, and then all the members killed themselves. I have never about this anywhere else. I have found there are two metal bands using the name Vlad Tepes, and neither of them committed group suicide. Has anyone heard of this happening with any group? It seems unlikely that the kid made it up, but I think it is probably an urban myth. This was probably in '95 or '96, and I had no access to the internet; few people did at the time.

Hi Parker. That's a good story. Did you ever find out if it was true.  My friend told me cliff Burton died at a metalica concert when his massive amp blew up. I was a bit sceptical tbh. This was made up obviously and I found out before too long.

Re memories of before the internet. The only place I got music or to listen to new music was the largely the record shops as none of my friends liked metal. It was ok but nowadays is so easy with so much on internet and the choice is so much better. Somehow I think atmospheric blackened doom with alot of Gregorian chant in Greek would not be at hmv in the UK. Yes I do own this. 😁

AC/DC were part of the scene in the mid 70's and by the late 70's they were starting to get international recognition and tours so we'd kind of lost them even though they used to call themselves Australian.  Bands like Little River Band and Air Supply were softer, more top 40 but hugely popular and they also went overseas quickly. INXS did the same and went from pubs and small clubs of maybe 2000 people to world wide arenas, but they were not as big of a live band here as many around the world think.

Bands like The Angels and Cold Chisel rocked 6 and 7 nights a week by the end of the 70's, both went overseas and although they did okay the US labels did not understand the music they were writing and tried to change it for a US market but it didn't work. Both continued to play loud, fast and powerful in Australia through the 80's. Cold Chisel broke up and went separate ways with lead singer Jimmy Barnes carving a successful career playing a similar hard rock type of music until he worked out he could sell anything and moved into soul music, blues and rock.

By mid 80's The Angles were a local force to be reckoned with, they knew their audience was in the pubs and small clubs and they played almost constantly, it was about then I started to get involved. The Angles paved the way for bands like Screaming Jets and the Baby Animals and by then we were doing statewide pub crawls. We'd only travel an hour or so down the road each day but the bands would be playing to packed pub every night where they knew so many of the fans.

In the 90's things started to change a bit and alcohol and drug fuelled violence was getting so bad at gigs some of the bands decided to move out of the pubs and start doing small halls and outdoor gigs. They weren't quiet the same and given that most of these bands grew up in alcohol fuelled venues, half of them grew up in alcohol fuelled families, it was hard for them to give up the easy sell audience where bands not only got a cut of the door they also got a cut of the booze sold. But quite a few of them decided they were just over the fighting and shit that went with every gig. It wasn't long after than I got out (not because of the booze bans) and while some of the bands kept playing, many went to a more low key role or called it quits.

And then there was metal, which really started to take off in a live sense here in the mid 80's and ran parallel to the pub rock scene.

Thankds for the history lesson very interesting.

Re the Beatles I never got that band. They done a number of songs I really really  liked like yesterday, sarge pepper song and some others the rest I'd leave. However the rest of the world including America loved them. Your right loads of bands have tried to crack America and loads and loads have failed.  Iron maiden Ive read only took off big time there when bruce d was singer. It's a hard place to break into definitely.

I've heard of Jimmy Barnes. He's on UK rock radio from time to time. Are Midnight oil, men at work part of the scene I've heard a couple of there tracks which they play on the UK radio.

Inxs didn't realise they were part of the same scene I'd assumed they just gone to America and got mutt Lange to produce them and they was instant success. Im not there biggest fan by any stretch but  the  songs I've heard of there's are very catchy especially the guitars. A bit overproduced for me. Sort of like zz top for there big hits. I'd probably like them more if it weren't so perfect and shiny neat sounding. 😁What a description 🤣

Sorry for such a late reply! To answer the question, no not really for long tracks, I saw Saor in 2018 and their tracks can be fairly long but nothing on the scale we are talking about. Would love to though. And will given the chance

Same hear I'd be a fan of seeing some of the long track doom stuff live when I see it available.

Yes it was pretty astounding how little they’ve aged musically 😁 Biff is great with the crowd too hes so funny, their new album is out next week aswell! So keep a look out for that one.

And if you’re going to go who knows! We might meet each other one day haha, depending where you are in UK lol

Me again🙂 the mechanic at work agrees to. He said he saw Saxon not long ago and was very impressed with the show. Also the lucky duck 🦆saw motorhead not that long before Lemmy died. He said only bad part of show was the volume. As it went up and up and up he migrated further away from the front. 😁

Yeah the new Saxon album. I need to you tube that and put it on my wishlist as short of money. A band I'd like to see is iron maiden before they retire. Did you see a show or at download. Was they good.

Yeah absolutely we might meet at a future gig. 🤘You never know.

Kayaking in Nepal-whoa! That sounds amazing. My local runs are on the Potomac in and around Washington D.C, Maryland and Virginia. I've done a fair amount of sea kayaking mostly on the Chesapeake Bay which is a differerent kind of experience. More about the journey and the experience of touring an area going from A to B and enjoying the beauty versus whitewater which is what I do these days. Nothing insane. I like to have fun and work on skills without scaring the living shit out of myself. A lot of class III with some class IV.

Teaching wise, mostly beginners on flat water (strokes and rolling) and in class II current. I'm taking a certification WW class this winter. My cert is in SK but I can use it to teach WW. Also beginner flat water trips which are a breeze.

On the whiskey front, seems like rye's are having a moment. Overall, I'm more of a traditional bourbon guy but I've been dabling in rye. Just splurged big time. and picked up a bottle of Jefferson's straight rye whisky finished in cognac casks single barrel. It's a select pick from my liquor store. Man, it's good. They say least nine months (but up to 19) resting in ex-Cognac casks. The finish is supposed to add some sweetness to the spice and heat of the rye. The cognac finish is really nice. There's a touch of orange in the finish.

And grabbed a seasonal Southern Tier Irish Cream stout.

Mark m good to hear from you.

Re kayaking I've googled the class 3 and  class4 rapids look very exciting but potentially very dangerous.. My standard is flat water on a river so some current on that.  😁The whitewater stuff sounds more exciting. All those places you teach cool. It be boring I think to teach on the same place all the time ☺️  re the Nepal stuff it was fun. It was white water rafting. Well it was fairly sedate most of it, but  there was white water sections that were exciting.. Instructors were excellent probably there main reason we didn't fall in for those sections. Also have you kayaked anywhere cool abroad. My great aunt kayaked Alaska🥶

The Jeffersons stuff sounds good. When I'm in funds I'm going to get some koval rye 100% rye whisky from the home of rye. Chicago 😁 ok just kidding. It's not a straight rye so it will have more bite. I would have got straight rye but after reading gg's post I changed my mind.

Also I got an email from Highland park about entering draw for a 1960 edition. £22000. I'm guessing that's an investment for  rich people but not to be drunk.

    Hey man 🤘

Thanks! I was super excited to meet him, I found out by the way that Blaze is gonna be touring with Wolfsbane next year, still not checked his stuff with them out yet, also i have a signed Vinyl and CD of the new KK’s Priest album Sermons of the Sinner, I like the album a lot, not as much as Jugulator but they’re making another album so 🤞

Yeah X Factor is especially dark sounding yet some of the songs make me fee happy, such as Sign of the Cross and Judgement of Heaven, you can really feel all sorts of emotion in the music.

The solo in Sign of the Cross is quite possibly my favourite solo of all time, also they do still play it live, I do however think that the song kinda belongs to Blaze, just fits him so well, still lovd Brucey though.

And yes as you said Blaze did pave the way for Maiden, a few of the songs from his era were used on Bruce’s comeback album Brave New World such as Dream of Mirrors, I think however i mostly prefer the Blaze era to the Post-blaze era, I do like Brave New World and Book Of Souls quite a lot though.

And hahaha Simon Cowbell 😂 your version of the show sounds amazing haha. I always hated how anything rock/metal related got relentlessly mocked from what i’ve seen on youtube 😡

Exactly man. My version of X factor would be great or something on those lines.😁 I happened to watch masked singer when Justin Hawkins was on it from the darkness. I liked it for the 5-10 mins he was on screen. After that I changed the channel. I'd decided they'd peaked 😉 I was impressed there was a rock person on it. Next they need Rob halford😁 disguised as a .......... A angry giant tuna fish 🐟😂

Thanks for info re blaze tour. I will note that down.vsigned kk priest stuff. 🤘

It's good to know not all maiden fans think Bruce is there favourite singer. Dickinson is amazing singer and I think probably one of the best in metal.  Sometimes he's bit theatrical for my liking. Sometimes he's a bit perfect for me vocally.. Probably crazy saying that but blaze I like because it's not all perfect but when he's on it. So good 😁 . However I reckon it's obvious maiden would not be the force they are without Brucey d. 🤘

Interesting what you say re the X factor album.yeah I reckon there is plenty of light/dark bits. Which I like. ☺️

I never got into his stuff that much, but I own everything he did with Deep Purple and if we just disliked people for blowing their own ego out of proportion we wouldn't like too many musos :)

Nostalgia tells me Horroscope is my favourite Overkill simply because I've listened to it so many times and do keep going back to it. But lately Wings Of War and The Grinding Wheel also get a hammering.

I'm mostly into thrash, older bands like Exodus, Slayer, Testament etc, but I also like newer bands like Evile, Evil Invaders and Suicidal Angles and so many in between. But I also listen to a lot of softer stuff from the 60's right through to today and I do have a soft spot for the raw energy of the Aussie pub rock scene of the 70's 80's and 90's because I was a part of it.

Kk cool connection to Australian pub rock scene 70s, 80s,90s. What were your favourite bands from that era. We're acdc part of this.

Excuse my ignorance but I know nothing about this era.🙂

I suppose in some ways my ulcer did help me cut back even further, but that only flares up occasionally, usually after too much salt or citrus. However I'd cut down a heap more than that years ago and I don't really know why. I think I just got sick of the high price of booze, then got sick of drinking beer, then got sick of drinking cider, then prices went up again and confirmed my thoughts so I just gradually went back to bourbon or whiskey only. Now I have half a cartoon of beer that's been sitting here more than 12 months and I only open when I want to make a beer batter for some fish, even then the smell of the open can reminds me why I gave up drinking the stuff.

That's a good reason to cut back pal re your ulcer. I had a ibd flare up for about 2 years so drinking was so unpleasant during this period so  I just stopped for nearly all of it until the troublesome area was zapped💥from what I saw on camera survey I knew I must cut back and I did. 😱😁

Good reason to cut back re the price of the drink. It's expensive. Less so with offers😁

Thanks mate! Good to hear from you too,

I never used to be a big fan of the X Factor album, but the first time I heard Sign of the Cross it blew me away, got to be a top 10 maiden track for me for sure.

His Solo stuff is brilliant and I love his voice, took ne a lil while to get used to it but his voice is very powerful in the lower ranges, Bruce is for sure a better fit for Maiden in general but for the material and the time that Steve Harris and the band were goi through at that time Blaze was a perfect fit, as The X Factor was a very dark gloomy sounding album.

and yes I have seen Blaze live!! It was fantastic his band is awesome the sound was amazing, was great as I also got to see KK and Ripper perform just before they actually formed Kk’s Priest! I even got to meet Blaze himself and he was an absolute gent I told him how I loved his albums with Maiden and he said he appreciated it and we talked about his solo albums how I love The Man Who Would Not Die :D here is my pic with Blaze!

    https://imgur.com/a/zSFAhGc

Also Blaze Bayley is definitely a more metal name that Bruce Dickinson. However @KillaKukumba Bruce Bruce does indeed trump Blaze’s name for “metalness” 😂😂😂

    It's me again dude😉

Cool picture with blaze🤘I looked up a tour but blaze is not playing near me so another time. That's cool seeing kk and ripper Owens. I've heard good things about there latest album

Dark gloomy album. Maybe that's why I like the X factor so much as most of my music is gloomy stuff. My wife has described me as most negative person she's ever met. Bit harsh 😁 2015 remaster sounds fantastic. Not heard the original version of X factor

SIgn of the crossThat epic final solo as well. So good. Apparently they play it live still so thats a mark of approval.

Blaze bayley I agree was needed at the time and it worked certainly long run as there going still and there still producing well received albums which get good reviews which sell well. The tracks I've heard of the post blaze era I've liked alot.

Blaze bayley is I think very metal name and Bruce Bruce has more metalness for sure😂

Yeah I think X factor would have been better with blaze bayley presenting and metal music instead of pop music. First episode could have been Simon cowbell 🙂(more metalness name😂)being shown a front row centre seat and told to have fun or leave. Judges rob halford, Steve Harris, Ozzy

    I'd watch it. 😁

Because I don't drink much these days alcohol has little value to me and I do refuse to pay a high price for stuff no matter what the brand name. But I don't think less of people who do go after brand name stuff, we all have our vices we like to spend money on but my days of spending $30 on a 4 pack of anything alcoholic are long gone.

My wife came home and told me about the new Bundaberg non-alcoholic flavours now being sold with Bundy rum in them and how they were only $30 for a 6 pack. I said to her I'd rather pay $4.50 for a 4 pack without the booze in it. Even she thinks I'm being offensive when I tell her I don't want to drink alcohol :)

I'm with you re not drinking so much these days. I've had some health issues so I've cut back to drinking once or twice a week. No drinks this week as I definitely need to have no booze weeks. Had french fries 🍟 instead. With lots of ketchup. Ohhhhhhhh. Living on the edge 😁

I'm fairly new to Whisky myself. I started picking up the odd bottle here and there when the pandemic hit. Actually got some good recommendations for GG and Navy and then started researching.

I pretty much started looking for sales and grabbing the better known bottles first and eventually made it up to pricier offerings to see if I could taste the difference mostly from online reviews. I was working a lot with my kayaking side hustle and making good tips. Most of the more pricey bottles I've grabbed I've been pleased with with a few exceptions that I didn't think were worth it.

I feel like I'm still developing my tastes. In my unrefined way, I'd day smooth and higher proof hit a sweet spot.  Lately been checking out ryes.

Some of these boutique bourbons are definitely too sweet for my preference. I like the Old Forester 1920 I mentioned but several of their other offerings are overly sweet for me. And Knob Creek is almost as good for less %. Knob Creek Rye small batch is tasty as hell. And they're 12 year is awesome.

I liked Jefferson. Their aged at sea gets well reviewed but it's not that much better than their small batch or reserve to justify over $70. It's better but their reserve is pretty darn good as well. If I think I used some tip money from my summer gig for that one.

I wouldn't mind picking up some more Four Roses that Navy mentioned-that one's pretty good.

Uncle Nearest 1856 100 proof by Jack Daniels was good. Picked that one up on sale. They have a less expensive 1884 at 94 proof which was also a good pour.

I've got a pretty good liquor store that gets a decent variety of whiskies and craft beer and they'll often hip to stuff-"hey we just got some _____ in that's  a good buy"-that kind of thing.

Oh yeah and good socks in the winter-primo! I use them for kayaking as well-Marino wool which dries quick-hit them up at R.E.I. when on sale all the time.

Markm cool to hear from you. I've got COVID so it's proving a welcome distraction.

Ive been buying fancy whisky occasionally for long time but I don't buy many a year. I know more about scotch whisky so thanks for bourbon information. Will likely go for a high rye one like the knob creek when I'm back in funds but thanks for info. Uncle nearest is interesting read. It's not owned by Jack Daniels from what I read but it's got alot of connection to jack Daniels.

    Thanks for socks tips.

I've got a good chocolate shop which is great however no real great alcohol shop other than online.

With the kayaking are you instructor? Am I right in assuming you take groups of people for various excursions? I did white water kayaking along time ago in Nepal. It was certainly exciting.

Have you heard of basil Hayden bourbon. The Kentucky straight bourbon got good reviews.  When I googled bourbon types there's 3 main types high rye, high wheat and traditional. Which is your favourite of the types. Alabaster from comment I'm guessing is a rye fan. I've definitely liked high wheat such as makers mark.

Just seen this mate, I think the X Factor album is amazing, incredibly underrated, it's between that and his Solo album The Man Who Would Not Die as to my favourite material of his, overall I think i'd probably pick his Solo stuff over his 2 Maiden albums although Virtual XI and X Factor have some awesome material on them.

Good to hear from you bud.

what is happening to me.😁 The X factor is growing on me. Love that opening track. Never thought I'd say that. I like the solo stuff I've heard even more. I'm surprised the music's beating my expectations. I can see why he got the iron maiden job in first place because he's got that sound. He cant do the long power notes to my ears as good as Bruce can but he excels bruce at some of the other notes. To my ears at least.  😁  Overall I think Bruce is better fit for maiden. However I'd agree blaze is definitely underated.  Might look for there tour dates as I bet it's good live. Have you seen blaze live.

Also blaze bailey is way more metal name I reckon than Bruce Dickinson. Just saying

Not heard of Magnum before, might have to give them a listen :P

Saxon id like to see live. I should make more of an effort to see them before they retire. Let me know how you get on with saxon. Alot of those old singers in my experience do a great job. Joey belladonna I thought was fantastic when I saw anthrax live and there's many others who I reckon do amazing. I think there experience for live gigs counts for alot. They just know how to work the crowd.   Cool third gig. My third gig was not anything like Saxon or as good.  Hopefully biff won't die like Lemmy. Fingers crossed. Lucky sock time etc 😉

Magnum there rock with fantasy elements. Vigilante is amazing song of theres. Storytellers night I thinks excellent. Not quite metal but not that far away. I discovered them thanks to planet rock.
