I have no idea if your even still looking at this post or not but I ran across it looking for some new cleanish vocal doom bands, I've come to accept that most of all them have a little growl here and there, but many many in my opinion anyway just ruin the entire feel when they start growling, I've been a metal head for 35 years and don't get me wrong I love some good gutteral demonic vocals, but not so much in my doom. Anyway in the off chance you might read this here's a few of my favorites if you haven't heard you should definitely check out...1st I can't believe no one has mentioned Pallbearer yet, Katatonia...Novembers Doom...My Dying Bride. Pallbearer is a must, the other 3 are fantastic as well but do have some growling here and there. My Dying Bride's newer releases not so much. Also DeathWhite, Ancient Wisdom although u might have to spell it Ancient VVisdom with 2 V's to find them sometimes, I love them though. Let's see, Bathory...Below...Blackwater Holylight (awesome chick group)...Cathedral (old school father's of Doom, I fell in love with their newer release 'The Last Spire' though)...Dawn of Solace...Dax Riggs...Fvneral Fvck...En Minor...Down...High Reeper....King Buffalo...Lunar Funeral... Lunatic Soul...Mad Season... Magna Carta Cartel...Mammoth Storm...Merlin... Servants to the Tide...Sorcerer...Spirit Adrift (amazing newer band)...The Blackwater Fever...The Dead Crows...Void King...Woods of Ypres (they have growling more than others, but their former singer RIP is amazing when he does cleans, he has plenty of full songs that are all cleans)

Well that's all I can ramble off the top of my head, hopefully you'll find a couple of those to your liking and maybe even a few new favorites, I guess hopefully u even read it first of all lol....but if I had to pick say 5 of those to only listen to forever it would be (no particular order) 1. Spirit Adrift 2. Ancient VVisdom 3. Down 4. DeathWhite 5. Pallbearer

Fantastic. I've met someone who likes pallbearer. Well done miw. 👍out of interest have you been fan long. I think there excellent by the way.

I'd forgotten about them. It's all clean singing from the albums I've got anyway.

    Good live too.

That's a good idea. Herbs in a toasted sandwich Obvious really. 😋

What makes you think you'll not like any of them? They're rock bands. Surely at least one of them would tickle your fancy.

So if you don't like black metal or death metal or hard rock then just exactly what kind of music do you like? Are you one of those 80's mainstream heavy metal only blokes?

I like best death/doom,doom , , Funeral doom stuff. Some selected black metal and thrash too. Bands like obituary, opeth, Mettalica, slayer, pallbearer, bell witch, slow, immortal, skepticism, wolves in the throne room, officium triste, jonestown, nixa vallenfyre, hamferd, abyssic,et moriemur etc.

Re mainstream 80s metal bands I like them enough to want to see them live and listen to them occasionally. Another reason I want to see these bands is they will just suddenly stop and I won't be able to see them. I'd have liked to see slayer but I put off seeing them a few times and now I can't.

Magnum were much better live than on record. Bob Cattley's voice just seemed better, and the band was good. Only bad bit of gig was arm waving bits. That was a bit too bon Jovi for me.🙄bought a killer t shirt too. Bob cattleys daughter served me which was cool.

I did listen to the bands you posted links for. Monster magnet was my favourite so far. Thanks for the links. I'd say there all rock. They'd play all those on planet rock(UK radio station)

I went to school with Ian Thompson. He played rugby league (of, course) - prop -1st grade for Manly-Warringah (Sea Eagles) and played for Australia but a broken leg ended his career. Every year in the grading trials for the school RU teams we would pack down on opposite sides of the scrum and he would get an arm free and hit me. Every year he ended up in the 1sts team, and me in the 2nds. We were friends but for him hitting me to put me off my game was just a part of the game that he got and I didn't and that's why he played 1sts and had a professional career and I didn't.

That guy that's cool you played against a good player like that. Aussie international for a bit too. Yeah that can be difference between the pros and the ones who don't make the grade. A friend of mine from my hometown used to play for London Scottish rugby team. I was playing in a friendly cricket match. He was umpire and he couldn't resist a bit of sledging of my bowling technique. Again it was about getting that edge but this was silly as he was umpire.🤨

Thanks mate! Hehe on a bit of a hunt for Saxon albums as you can see.

New guitar strings.. nice! I still need to learn to play my guitar, just don’t have the patience or have any idea where to start, think I might need an instructor.

I'm the same with the guitar. I lack that patience to get far with it. 😊

I decided to fire up virtual 11 remastered version by blaze bailey era iron maiden on you tube. I liked the album alot when played from start to finish. I was surprised i liked it as much as I did. It's not as dark as the X factor. No mention of contemplating suicide here. But I liked it alot😉What's your favourite of the two blaze albums?

I reckon a bailey Harris project would be amazing. I'm sure a few have suggested it. Would you like to see that?

    How old is your mum?

Rock bands? Well a lot of the rock bands I'd like to see are old men now and they're either dead or no longer touring or just too old and decrepit for me to care about seeing live anymore. Like: Zeppelin, Bad Co, Sabbath, AC/DC, Trower, Thin Lizzy, Skynyrd... But there are some bands I did have a chance to see back when they were still in their prime: Ramones, Riot, ZZ Top, Heart, Molly Hatchet, Circus of Power, Ted Nugent...but I wouldn't have much interest in seeing them now.  Which I guess makes me an ageist, but I just can't get excited about the prospect of seeing 70+ year old men prance around onstage. I'm not a big classic rock guy in general, so there really aren't very many of those old 70's rock bands I grew up listening to on the radio that I'd have any desire to see even if they were still in their prime.

Now as far as rock bands from the last 25 years or so that are curently active and still (somewhat) in their prime, most of the modern day rock bands I'm into have a bit of a punk flavor to them, or punk overtones. I guess everyone has their own idea of where the line between rock music and punk rock lies, it can definitely blur for me as a bunch of these bands I dig seem to have one foot on each side of that line. Now I happen to really like punk rock, but I know a lot of other people don't. So I reckon a lot of the bands I dig are probably not going to have any appeal to certain people.

Many of my favorites can be found on that hard rock thread Marky Mark started a couple of weeks ago, I made a list of like 30 albums. I don't really listen to any soft-cock, chick-friendly, knicker-lobbing bands like Magnum though. Not judging though, to each his own, obviously everyone's free to be into whatever they're into. My idea of good rock music is probably a bit harder than most people's, some folks might even consider some of these to be heavy metal bands, I don't know. But to me these are some of the best rock bands, you really can't go wrong with any of these:

2 Headed Dogs - The Engine is On

Supersuckers - The Evil Powers of Rock 'N' Roll

The Mud City Manglers - Heart Full of Hate

Peter Pan Speedrock - Buckle Up And Shove It!

Zeke - Kicked in the Teeth

    Monster Magnet - Monolithic Baby!

All Them Witches - Dying Surfer Meets His Maker

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.M.R.C.

    Riot - Restless Breed

    Circus of Power - Vices

Cool thanks for the links old boy😉. I will check em out. Will probably dislike them all. Yeah if I like any I will let you know on that other thread. Thanks👍

My mum is 72. She's not really a rock fan. Bruce Springsteen is about as rock as my mum gets. Magnum sound similar to that kind of music. The mechanic at work thought magnum sound bit like foreigner. I reckon he's on to something with that. Certainly vocals do go a bit Lou gramm at times.

Melted cucumber? I'd have tried to melt the cheese :P

We don't have mother's day here until the first Sunday in May so I feel that anything I prepare now for anyone's mother would be wasted.

I did make a meatloaf the other day that we are still eating. It doesn't sing like a Bat Out Of Hell but it tastes good and was easy to make so 2 outta three aint bad.

Oh yeah. Melted cucumber requires proper industrial equipment lol😉 to do melted sandwich I toast bread. Make sandwich with cheese chunks. Microwave it till cheese is melted then I put in some slices of cucumber. Very posh English 🇬🇧😁

Re mother's day dinner. Never too early to be ready and make it. Might be mouldy or eaten by mice. At least you showed willing. 😉

2 out of 3 re meatloaf. Not bad. My taste is gone today. So if I'd eaten the spag Bolognese or dog food 🐶🐕 blind test today I probably wouldn't have noticed the difference 😊

GG your right re women liking magnum.  I played some magnum to my mum and she was very very angry I didn't buy her a ticket 🤣 tbh I got the tickets as an alternative to watching nothing but metal shows. It's good to mix it up a bit for me. Plus I like there music somewhat. I bet there good live band.

What rock bands would you like to see? I know you like rock music. You've mentioned it on other posts.

  9. I'm looking forward to conjurer's nuclear blast debut album. They got alot of coverage in kerrang and metal hammer mags UK for there debut the mire. Nearly every band hailed as best new UK band  I generally don't like but conjurer I do. It's exactly the sort of melancholy atmospheric metal I listen to all the time anyway which reminds me a bit of opeth at there best in places. It's also cool there a UK band and they hail not that far away from my hometown. The preview track on bandcamp I'm liking alot.

  10. Iron maidens X factor I did not like to begin with. However I was expecting Bruce Dickinson first listen. I didn't know he was not the singer. However 2nd listen I enjoyed it alot. Now I love the record even if there's about 10 of us who really like it😉

Pallbearers heartless album I did not like to begin with as it's very slow and seemed about boring and just too slow. After a few plays I got really in to it. It was my most played album for a time. I liked it so much when a family member asked for a great record for Christmas present. I gave them that and they were not happy at all😂so funny now not so back then.

    Agreed!  Not enough Blayze fans!

It's interesting you mentioned ambient stuff, because I really love it!  I enjoy depressive, atmospheric doom and/or black metal on occasion.  There's something about the trance it puts me in - it just takes me to another world entirely.  But yes, I think ambient stuff is fantastic.  I can kick back with the headphones on, close my eyes, and be whisked away.  Do you have any recommendations for ambient music?

Excellent!  I really hope you get to go to the live show!  I look forward to hearing how it went.

James t good to hear from you. Hope your doing good. Yeah I agree not enough blaze fans especially of the X factor and virtual 11  which I like alot.

Mettalica played last year in UK and maiden are only doing download festival. I don't fancy 3 day festival, especially the mud fest that often happens at UK download festival.

Cool you like ambient stuff. Slows deeper in the space.......album  is worth a listen. Kind of eerie but very atmospheric and interesting to listen to.   Actually most of the stuff I considered ambient are just long doom tracks i.e 45 mins and up. Out of interest what ambient stuff do you recommend.

  12. Just had a cheese and cucumber melted sandwich 😋

Also made the vege spag Bolognese for tomorrow. It's very good. Added slightly too much oregano but with extra cheese 🧀 it tastes great. The chunky carrot is bit different but I like it. I rarely cook a meal like this but it's mother's Day tomorrow so I made the effort. The Linda mc cartney mince I thinks surprisingly good. Never tried this brand before.

Anyone else preparing food for mother's day

  13. Out of interest did anyone go to school or are friends with pro rugby players. There was two I know from school who played pro rugby. They rose through Northampton saints academy.  Ben Russel was youngest in England to turn pro at the time(at 23)his career cut short by injury. The other player will boughley played for Worcester.  Neither was regular for the club. But still they were both playing premier rugby.will got a medal for winning a European cup. It was the lesser of the two competition they had at time but still Cool even if he was mostly used as a sub.  I was bit surprised anyone from my school went that far. We were not that sporty a school.

I'm lost for words😉 story of my life. tbh I left myself open for this. Im not going to lob anything on stage. The more I say this the more you won't believe me😂 yeah good advice re stage diving. After 12 whiskeys I may forget though. I'm not that heavy but enough to cause some damage.

I met him a few times. He was a staple of the London scene and could be found holding up the bar at Crobar on Tottenham Court Road pretty much any night of the week, around the corner from Astoria and Mean Fiddler (at least when I lived close by and went to a gig once or twice a week in mid 2000s). Tin Pan Alley (Denmark Street - where all the guitar shops are and Regent Studios was - Paranoid was recorded) is also across the road. Probably all demolished now for Crossrail. Haven't been there for quite a while.

Anyway. Malcome was very well respected, passionate about metal, and you'll see him interviewed on all kinds of metal history docs.

    RIP

Well said Jono.  I always liked reading his reviews in metal hammer magazine.  Apparently Mettalica got there name from a book Malcolm wrote about metal. Sort of like an encyclopedia. They invited him to the Grammy's but he preferred the cro bar.

Fantastic the concert was good for you. When I hear the singer I still think of the gingerbread man from Shrek. What do I know😉 it's good we all like different music

Magnum will be amazing I'm sure.  Obviously not your type of music. May end up being me and a room full of screaming women lobbing knickers on the stage🤮. I hope not 🍀 not heard of savvy. Sound terrible 😊

That's fantastic youve survived the beef sarnie. My daughter ate play doh on the sly and she was🤮 all day. Kids😞

Thanks!  Hopefully, I can make it to a show!

Metallica was awesome live!  I wasn't a fan of any of their 90's albums (including the Black Album), but I enjoyed "Death Magnetic", "St. Anger", and "Hardwired...to Self-Destruct" quite a bit.  They played a great mix of some of their 80's classics and some newer stuff as well.  It was a 360-stage, so the whole band rotated to different microphones and faced different parts of the arena throughout the show, so it was a really cool idea.  There were some pretty cool pyrotechnics during a few songs as well.  I'm guessing they're paying more attention to safety these days, since Hetfield was accidentally burned on stage during a live show several years back.  But yes, it was a great show and one I'll never forget!

I think the Maiden albums with Blayze are really good.  A truly pleasant surprise.  Always good to mix up different styles for sure.  My favorite style is groove metal, with thrash, traditional heavy metal, and straight-up rock 'n roll following closely behind.

I'm just glad live music is happening again!

    Thanks for info James t.

Man that's so cool your a blaze fan. There's not enough of us😁

Mettalica live would be amazing. That's good the 360 degree thing works, I was never convinced it would work but it's one where it works better live I bet. My mate says there amazing live with the selection of songs like you say. It's cool to hear another  good review re this. Seeing them and maiden is on my bucket list. All that pyro and stage props will make an amazing spectacle for both bands.

Yeah cool not just me who likes a variety of metal. That's why I rarely listen not to metal. That's quite a selection you got. Do you listen to ambient stuff. I've got in to that more recently.

ITS good we've got live music back for now at least. I'm seeing magnum Monday. 2 years after they were scheduled to play because of you know what. Hopefully it won't get cancelled again

That is just sheer bastardry. I always used a mouthguard/gumshield when I played and anyone with any sense would. The professionals use them.

I didn't wear a gum shield when I played and I lost the front of my tooth. Lucky considering it was just the front that just fell off.

Your right the pros use gum shields. I'm guessing most amateurs use gum shields too.

    What's toffee?

I do the heating trick with water bottles. Freeze them solid then zap 'em for 2 minutes in the microwave which melts them just enough for me to drink some, and then I'll usually pour whatever's left of my last water bottle into the frozen one a little at a time and shake it up, which chills the water and helps melt the block of ice. For the longest time I'd just drink tap water in my ever present big black stainless steeel cup with lots of ice, but my well water has traces of radon in it so I've reluctantly given in to the silly bottled water trend.

I'm about to eat the roast beef sandwich I bought yesterday. I was on my way back from the deli with food for the guys and the kid and myself when I saw the fish & chips truck in the bakery parking lot was open for the first time this year. (they sell fish & chips every Friday from 3 til 7 but only in the nice weather) So I had to stop and get two, one for me one for the kid, (they've gone from $10 to $15 now this year unfortunately) and I figured I'd just save the sammies for today. Left them out overnight (just forgot) and then put them in the fridge this morning at the crack of 10am. That's 19 hours sitting on the counter and only 4 hours in the fridge, hope we don't get sick. I'll smell it first, if it smells alright I'm eating it. Going to see Overkill in PA tonight, don't want to be spewing all over everyone or have diarrhea in the bathroom of this place or anything.

Toffee is the same as taffy. Does this clear it up. There like starburst as there lemon flavor except alot more hard and brittle.

Good idea re the frozen water trick. Nice cool water. Some of the customers at work don't drink the water because the pipes are lead. I will tell them to stop moaning as it's not got radon in it.

Was overkill live good. James t from this forum saw them a few days back. He said they played  amazing show. How was beef sandwich. Did you eat it?

I'm seeing magnum next week. There a  British rock band .  I'm assuming you've never heard of them.  Fantasy themes. Cool album covers. Some very catchy songs including vigilante, story tellers night 🌃

  20. On 3/19/2022 at 8:04 PM, KillaKukumba said:

Toffee in it's most basic form is just fine sugar and water. Depending on what your purpose is other things can be used like molasses or brown sugar. But you can also add things like flour and butter if you were making something like a sweet slice that might have a dry thin base with a hard sugary top. It's also used in confectionery bars that you get at the shop.

Unless of course he's talking about Toffee nose people and they're rich people with their nose in the air. Why he's soften them in the microwave before eating them I don't know, they are usually pretty soft to begin with!

To teach them a lesson 😉

  21. Is using a gum shield like the done thing most rugby players use. One of my wife's friends plays rugby and they played against one player who was so scathing about gum shields they decided to teach them a lesson by knocking out alot of there teeth.bit harsh if you ask me. Surely just winning the game would have been all that they needed to do.  😉

Oh yeah, I love new recommendations!  It's a blast discovering new music.  Really glad you liked Saturnus.  "Veronica Decides to Die" is my favorite album of theirs and one of my favorite metal albums, period.  The opening track alone is worth the price.

That's really cool that Lamb of God is touring the UK at the end of the year.  I understand what you mean about the price, though.  I just saw Overkill live last weekend here in the States, and the ticket cost me $126.  But they're my favorite thrash band of all time, so I was more than happy to pay it.  But if it had been a band I wasn't especially crazy about, I wouldn't have made the purchase.

I've been to 1 arena show, and it was Metallica back in January of 2019.  The place holds 19,000 people, just in the seats.  But with the standing room only tickets on the floor, I bet there were about 21,000 total.  It's my dream to see AC/DC in an arena/stadium setting, but I can't imagine how much tickets will cost when they finally do go on the PWR UP tour.  I'm keeping it in mind, though!

I'd like to see Mettalica live. Ive got to just pay the money. Last time they toured UK tickets were £100 and I said no. However when they next tour I may just buy some tickets anyway. What was they like live did they have lots of props and special effects. Obviously they've got the amazing music.

New music from unexpected places is great. Iron maiden xfactor was last surprise purchase I got from a metal forum recommendation. It was a case where I got it because I liked it and was something a bit different. I don't know about you but if I listen to the same style of metal non stop I just get bored and sick of it. At those points I put my other styles of metal on. Keeps things fresh. With Veronica decides to die. The early tracks were my favourite and was very much music I listen to alot of the time. Produced by Flemming Rasmussen who Mettalica fans know who that is😉

For a band you like alot why not. I've spent similar money on watching some sports events in the United States and it was not worth it as the match was boring but that's the risk. Even bands have off nights. It makes the great concerts even more memorable.

Good luck with getting tickets for acdc show
