ChainsawAkimbo gave a Damn to FatherAlabaster in 50 Most Important Metal Bands of 21st Century
GODDAMN COMMERCIAL ENTRY-LEVEL HACKED-UP POORLY WRITTEN BADLY RESEARCHED IRRELEVANT BULLSHIT CLICKBAIT GARBAGE but hey, it's cool to see a couple of my favorite bands on the list EVEN THOUGH IT SUCKS AND THE FUCKING CENTURY ISN'T EVEN TWENTY PERCENT OVER YET but although I don't really like a lot of these bands, I can see why a few of them are on here, since they've definitely had an impact on the metal world even if THEY'RE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT A WORTHLESS LIST OF HAS-BEENS AND TRITE RADIO POP METAL LIKE CORN KERNELS IN A TURD FUCK HATE KILL STOMP SMASH
    SMASH
    AAAARGH

I suppose Vader and Krisiun are pretty good examples.. The song i chose from Vader has some orchestral stuff but still is "punchy", and Krisiun is.. Krisiun. I love both bands.

ChainsawAkimbo given a Damn from FatherAlabaster in What's so good about EMG pickups?
I suppose for metal what you want is high output with good note separation. EMG, Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio have plenty of suitable pickups.. It´s not the simplest possible question though. In example for thicker strings and lower tuning you might want a touch brighter pickup than regular strings/tuning. Every guitar sounds different too, the bridge and nut among other things effects the sounds.. Then theres the matter of taste too. Just research.. try to listen to examples with similar set you are using.

I've not the faintest clue why, or how, but today I woke up in a fantastic mood. I'm feeling positive and productive. So good people of MetalForum I hope you all have sensational days.

Can´t help it, Forest of shadows is my new "favourite band".. sad, melodic, gloomy, atmospheric.. absolutely everything i look from my music these days.. It´s not too complicated, but it just gives me what i need currently..

I must agree.. it´s not even my usual genre.. but seems the old and new Wintersun just stays on my playlist year after year..

    Wintersun - 'The Forest Seasons'
This is an amazing album that continues the trend of improvements in Wintersun's discography. This album is seriously amazing. Buy the album and read the lyrics, it just works so well.
Also, if you get the chance to see Wintersun live, do it. I was a hater, just like you, then I heard this album and saw them live. If Jari wants a swimming pool in his newly built studio, I'll scoop out the leaves.
Great artwork and band member photos too by the way.

ChainsawAkimbo gave a Damn to FatherAlabaster in Underrated-but-great oldskool death metal
We'll probably be covering a bunch of ground we've already gone over in the main rec thread, but I think it might be cool to have a strictly old-school thread.
Deteriorate - Rotting In Hell: this album kicks ass, early 90s DM from Pennsylvania. Kind of a "warm" sound, savage vocals, and riffs that explore a lot of what the era had to offer - aggressive chunk, evil-sounding tremolo sections, drawn-out doomy bits, and the occasional creepy melody. Not reinventing any wheels, but catchy and fun.

Scattered Remnants - Procreating Mass Carnage: this "demo" sounds like shit in a good way. Dark, brutal, and filthy, occasionally brooding but mostly pummeling.

Broken Hope - The Bowels Of Repugnance: I'm not fond of their bland "comeback" stuff, but this album has personality. Deep gutturals, brutal chunk, plodding death, blasting grind, all in good fun.

Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead: technically accomplished but still raw, this 1991 album is another that exemplifies what DM had to offer at the time. Aggressive and somewhat thrashy vocals, tough-as-nails riffing, energetic songwriting - these guys were poised to go places, but apparently were turned down for a contract because they didn't have the right look. Members would go on to Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, and Dim Mak. EDIT - full album stream got taken down, so here's one track that's still up:

Amorphis - Privilege Of Evil: we'll leave the USA for a moment. This band may need no introduction, but they've all but left their roots behind, and those roots were fucking awesome. Grim, dark, and moody, this recording in particular captures most of what I love about Finnish DM, without the polish of the more professional recording on "The Karelian Isthmus". See if it doesn't draw you in.

I'll add more later - one other thing, for Morta Skuld I actually prefer "As Humanity Fades". For some reason "Dying Remains" gets the props, but I think the follow-up is stronger and more mature.

ChainsawAkimbo gave a Damn to Will in Jared Dines' Solo Contest
Apparently Ernie Ball is holding a solo contest with a decent prize giveaway, promoted by the YouTuber Jared Dines. The song that you solo over is "Raise Your Glass" by Daddy Rock (I only found out about the band because of this contest). I was thinking of maybe entering for fun and, knowing there are a few guitarists on this sight, though I would see if any of you guys are interested.

Same. When I did shop work, I almost always got my co-workers to leave the radio off. I'd much rather listen to nothing than to garbage.

ChainsawAkimbo given a Damn from FatherAlabaster in Albums you wish you could unhear.
I have to agree with someone who earlier mentioned pointless pop songs. Especially annoying when you are force fed in a workplace (used to work at a place where majority wanted a shitty pop radiostation), and then something gets stuck in your head.. oh the horror! And of course the station mainly played the same songs every day, so it was a neverending loop of agony..

Anata rules, The Conductor's Departure is one of my favorite tech death albums. @ButterLettuss, given some of your other taste, you might enjoy last year's albums by Virvum and Burial In The Sky if you haven't heard them yet.

I would NEVER badmouth Skepticism. Funeral doom is my favourite kind of doom and Skepticism's slightly creep atmospheric variant is spectacular.

I only know of Anata thanks to FatherAlabaster so really all thanks should go to him.

Wouldn't that phrase be much more applicable to Funeral Doom though? Sludge isn't always crazy slow. Certainly it's more then 30bpm like Skepticism and Thergothen (both bands I love).

Perhaps there are some similarities, I'd say there are plenty of differences as well. Anata are a bit more tech-death but fuck those melodies are catchy. Great now I have to spin that album again...
