DIdn't want to open a new thread so this fits here quite allright.
I was at a metal fest last weekend. Best performances of the weekend:
    1. Vomitory
Tight, hard edged death metal. Great machine!
    2. Batushka
    The numinous one. Best atmosphere.
    3.  I am morbid (Morbid angel)
Always reliable legends. Sandoval and Vincent are still kicking it.
    4. Impaled nazarene
Grinding punkish old school black/death metal. Still not slowing down.
    5. Suicide angels
The black horse. Thrash metal from Greece. They had the inside stage and they owned it. Better show than Sodom. I don't know if I will ever listen to them on record, but great live band.
Sodom, Dark funeral, Emperor, Watain were business as usual.
Out of my taste but still listenable. Before the dawn, Bloodred hourglass, Leprous.
I missed Asagraum and Chamber of Unlight, but that's okay. I see them in other bm gigs anyway.

Throneum - The tight deathrope act over rubicon

This shouldn't work, but somehow I like it. This is now a second Throneum album I'm listening to and it's the same odd sound on this one. Kind of sludgy riffs, drumming is at the same time sharp and wild, vocals aren't typical death or black metal either. Overall it feels kind of proggy too. I don't understand half of what's going on, but I still like it.

Other bands that I've been listening to for the past 7 days aren't nothing surprising in my books. Lots of Graveland, Blood chalice, Förgjord, Inquisition, Clandestine blaze, Vomitory, Behexen and so on...

Dark Angel - Leave Scars (1989)
I like all Dark Angel albums (We Have Arrived a bit less though) but this one is special. The guitars sound a bit recessed, which gives a distinctly unhealthy edge to the band's thrash. I just love it.

I wasn't there in the 90's but today it seems if you find a good sounding band I usually follow the record studio where the album was produced. Cadaveric incubator for example is currently labeled under Hells headbanger's records and I found Black jesus from the roster which sounds pretty good to me.
Black jesus - Everything black everything dead
In finnish black metal scene if something comes up from Werewolf, Kvlt or Northern heritage studios, I'm pretty sure already it is going to be something good. I hardly use any YT or Bandcamp.

Ignivomous - Death Transmutation, 2009. Perhaps the most brutal and punishing of the three? Hard to tell. This is like one part Incantation, one part Dead Congregation, one part Angelcorpse and one part Teitanblood chuck them in the blender and you'd get this.

CumBloodSucker gave a Damn to GoatmasterGeneral in Fan of albums, not bands
But that's what I've been saying. All bands big and small will lose whatever it was that made them so great after awhile. It's very rare to see a band release stuff 30 or 40 years down the road that's nearly as good as their early stuff.
My point was that the more obscure extreme metal bands who have regular jobs because they aren't making much if any money from this music thing, are much less likely to stay together to keep churning out uninspired mediocre albums for 40 years just because they feel obligated to. Because they haven't created some brand name corporation they're now enslaved to and they're not raking in tons of dough like the big name bands. Which understandably makes it a lot harder for the big name musos to walk away from the whole thing. Offer a band a quarter million to play a big festival show or a million or more for a limited tour or many millions for an extended tour and it's gotta be hard to say no to that kind of money. Underground bands maybe get $2k for a little club show that needs to be split between the band and crew and management and also pay for merch and touring expenses. Much easier to walk away from that life. Especially when you get to a certain age and you just get tired of living in a van or a bus with a bunch of other smelly dudes.
The smaller bands have less pressure on them so they can just release stuff at their leisure if and when they feel like it, or not if they don't. If you're one of the 'mercs' it's easy to float around and play with different bands which keeps things fresher than just being in one band all that time playing the same god damned songs at every show for 40 years. At some point when the little no name bands have had enough they can just fade away and you'll never hear from them again. The bigger bands have more pressure to keep going into their 50's and 60's and beyond as you've pointed out for a variety of reasons mainly because they feel like someone's counting on them and they don't want to let them down. From the fans to the record companies to their employees and even their fellow band members.
How many big name bands have you heard about who have members that basically hate each other, but they keep going anyway because they wouldn't want to lose that revenue. The band has become too big to fail. How many Priests and Maidens and Anthraxes have we seen the original lineup split up for awhile and then end up back together for the money. The brand name becomes bigger and more important than any individual member. Underground two-piece bands don't have to do that, it's much easier for them to go their separate ways and do something else if they want. A lot of the little black metal bands many metalheads have never heard of are really just one guy or 2 or 3 guys who are often in multiple bands/projects at the same time, which must help keep it all from getting too stale to them. Especially some of these black metal drummers (mercs) if they're good they can be in like 2 to 4 or even 6 or 8 bands at a time.
Just saying the underground metal band musician's life is a lot different from the rockstar legacy band musician's life.

CumBloodSucker given a Damn from Thatguy in Fan of albums, not bands
In my mind the genre comes first. Black metal is the core of everything. There it spreads to both bands and albums. I wouldn't call myself a fan of any band or particular album even though there are many favorites in both categories. I wear a band shirt to salute them for a given time and place. I'm a black metal "fan" for certain. Bands and albums come and go, some circle around longer than the others, but black metal stays forever. And a few other genres too.

On the concept of familial savantism I'm inclined to believe that circumstance comes into play as much there as it does in anything else. That's not to say that talent doesn't exist or even that I could blame anybody for using their influence to try and give their offspring a leg up in the world. It's often discussed in literature in regards to the Bronte sisters or Henry and William James (although in that case only Henry was a novelist and his brother was a psychologist and philosopher). There's no question that it does occur from time to time. The main problem seems to be that in most cases, regardless of nature or nurture, it's nearly impossible for a child who shows exceptional aptitude to completely embrace and utilize that aptitude without diverging completely from the path the father took.
I remember being in Austin visiting friends one night carousing the bars when Ziggy Marley was playing. Of course people showed up to the show just by virtue of him being Bob's kid, but he was playing what sounded to me like the exact same style of reggae that his father would have with a little hip hop mixed in, and I think the crowd was pretty widely disappointed. Say what you will about the Greeks and their weird rapacious deities, the part of the Oedipus myth where he murders his father has some ring of truth to it in the metaphorical sense.
    NP: Crocell - Prophet's Breath
    ▶︎ Prophet's Breath | Crocell | Deepsend Records (bandcamp.com)

Interesting choice for an album cover here (and I don't mean to damn with faint praise. The music's good too). A lot of death metal bands in this style go with something otherworldly or supernatural or, at the very least, cartoonishly unrealistic in it's depiction. It sort of lets potential fans know that it's death metal, but not grind, and in it's reverence to the often hand drawn covers and posters from the past will probably carry that reverence into the music. So... not slam basically. Here we get a destroyed city-scape in what appears to be textile. Kind of a neat approach if you ask me, and it got my attention for sure.

None of that would get to me. You wanna push my elitist kvlt buttons I think only telling me bands like Fen and Deafheaven or NY bands like Krallice, Liturgy and Yellow Eyes are "black metal" would be enough to do the trick, then I'd blow because I can't keep it in. Same with the Jesus people, I just don't have that kind of restraint around ignorance that severe that runs that deep. Drop me into the fishbowl of southern evangelical culture and I don't know what I'd do. I'd probably engage with them and make things worse on myself even while thinking to myself that it probably wasn't a very good idea. This is not something we had to contend with up here in NY. We had reigious people but nothing like the southern evangelicals. Where I grew up mostly we had a lot of Irish and Italian and Polish Catholic families that pretended to be religious but besides wrangling up all the kids into the wood paneled station wagon and heading down to church on Chritmas and Easter because they thought that was expected of them, didn't seem like they gave their faith or religion much thought the other 363 days. Even though their parents sent all those kids to the local Catholic school, that was literally only because they weren't going to let them go to public school with black kids, nothing to do with religion. I was the lone WASP kid on the block and we didn't even pretend to be religious. We put up a Christmas tree each December and took the Lord's name in vain year round, I think that was just about the extent of our "religion."
Human Pancake - No Cowards, Pennsylvania goregrind. I like this, as goregrind goes this is great. I really don't mind the pig grunt vox as long as they don't start doing squeals and the breeee breeee stuff then I'm out. But 45 tracks 72 minutes might be just a little too much goregrind for me. There's a reason most of the albums in this sub-genre are 25 minutes long. Now deathgrind would be a different story. Good deathgrind I could listen to 10 albums in a row and never get tired of. These guys edge close to death metal here and there but never quite reach it.

Ósserp - Els Nous Cants de la Sibil·la, deathgrind Barcelona Spain, 2022. Oh yeah this is more like it.
