  1. Think it's time for a good old fashioned Bandcamp rager today. Clean out my wishlist and such. Need some music to accompany me on my trials. Circle of Ouroborus - Thurisa Sumerlands - Dreamkiller Casket Cassette - s/t Fetid Zombie - Transmutations
  2. Never pegged the General as a Fugazi guy. This morning: HUM - Inlet Judas Priest - Painkiller Clandestine Blaze - City of Slaughter
  3. Sure why not. Everything else under the sun has been combined.
  4. Definitely one of the best punk albums of all time. Just so damn good. Bad Brains and Minor Threat were the cream of the crop of the early DC punk scene.
  5. Yeah, there were distinct contingents on MFi that took the conversation in opposing directions. Goats vs. pansy metal fans 😆 (just teasing those, no hard feelings for any of them) got downright hostile at times honestly and resulted in the Great Vortex schism. I never liked the practice of numerically scoring out albums as I just don't look at music that way, but I did enjoy many of the recommendations and viewpoints different than my own which did influence several purchases which I still enjoy to this day. I do think there were very valuable threads there that were gear focused (i.e. the headphone thread) that I gleaned some valuable knowledge from. Ultimately however, I think the vastly different focuses of the participants was the undoing before Alex pulled the plug. On a production note, I'm in the camp that thinks the best production might not be best for a particular record. Certain styles/bands demand certain production. Can't imagine Darkthrone with the production of say Unleash the Archers. Just wouldn't work. So that was always an argument determined to fail to say album x had the best production of the year. And some, even though we may disagree, really work best when compressed to all fuck and back.
  6. Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse Opeth - Orchid Triptykon - Melana Chasmata Tiamat - Sumerian Cry
  7. Can verify. Not exactly the person you expect to meet based on internet interaction. I know when I met the old goat (albeit unfortunately too briefly due to my inability to hang on to my cell phone for an entire weekend), I half expected a grizzled old piss of a hesher that resembled a Lemmy impersonator rather than your average everyday dad. Not exactly sure where I got that idea from but have had a chuckle about it once or twice.
  8. Sounds like you need a good exorcist my dude. That's quite the litany of bad luck. Just kidding, but seriously, I know I've got it pretty good compared to the wider world. Where I spend the majority of my time does have crime, but those of the violent sort tend to stay contained in distinct areas. The police here are arrogant bastards (aren't they everywhere?), but do generally act in a responsible way to deter criminals. Can't say I've seen an open fist fight in the last 10 years at least. Hell, I regularly come home from work and find my daughter has been around and left my garage and/or front door unlocked. Annoying but not worrisome. I'm sure those here with long term exposure to major metropolitan areas like GG, markm, Surge, and others probably can relate to your experience more than I. My point was really that the US as a whole gets a bad rap in world's eye mainly due to our overly aggressive and over developed media. The vast majority of this country is full of decent people who just want to go about the day with little drama. Definitely some who don't represent that but not so much that I would advise folks to stay away. And I have no evidence, but I think it's fair to say it's one of if not the most visited countries in the world.
  9. Yeah, I really didn't engage on that thread much although I followed it from about the same time. Their tastes tended to be much different than mine and there were a few that would just shout you down if they didn't jive with your "viewpoint".
  10. Yeah, 10 years sounds about right to me for forums. I've been searching up info on music since the dial up days but never made the jump to get actively involved until later. I was mildly engaged, more of a lurker, until I found the old Metal-Fi board (2015/2016?) which is pretty similar to this in that there were rational, intelligent, mature adults (for the most part) engaging in the conversation. Most boards out there I've perused are an absolute dumpster fire.
  11. Yeah man. Fucking Vigna is just ridiculous. And Wilkinson, Taylor, and Bouks are all underrated in spot #2. Keeping up with that maniac is no small feat.
  12. Love me some Immolation. Always been my favorite DM band. Perusing my bandcamp wishlist for potential purchases. Not much has really got me excited recently. Couple of albums dropping at the end of the month that will be purchases, but precious few as of right now I'm willing to throw dollars at. Daeva - Through Sheer Will and Black Magic - this will be a purchase Kold Front - Kold Front - Danish coldwave/post-punk. A maybe. Female fronted which always draws a Siouxsie Sioux thought to mind. This Cold Night - Black Cherry EP/Are We Not Immortal Yet? - minimal coldwave/post-punk from Austin, Tx. False Figure - Castigations - you guessed it. More post-punk. More 80's sound to this one.
  13. Yeah not me. Downtown Baltimore isn't a place I'd want to hang around at 1 am without 6000 of my closest friends, but like anywhere, keeping your wits about you and knowing when to bug out will keep you out of harms way. I've been to almost every major city in the US and some of the most notorious neighborhoods. Never had a problem. As my dad said all the time when I was a kid, being respectful and genuine to people goes a long way.
  14. Maybe I'm numb to it or just not paying attention. Seems as safe as it ever was to me. I don't watch the news or follow the media at all, so probably just blissfully ignorant.
  15. Skid Row was actually the first band I ever saw live. Opened for Bon Jovi in 88 when I was 13. Pretty damn good show, but then again, I didn't know good from bad at that point. They were touring off the first album. Saw them in March opening for the Scorpions. Couldn't get over fast enough. The new kid is awful. Stage presence sucks and he's like a budget Baz knockoff from the dollar store. They played a couple of the new songs. They were crap.
  16. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Edison, but the heat, lack of sitting spots/shade, and the bus back and forth leaves a bit to be desired. Helps that most of what I wanted to see was there, but I did miss a few shows I wanted to see had they not been a bus ride away. That and better places to eat and drink by Rams Head (or 10 minutes back to the room and grab a drink). I can live without the clusterfuck outdoor stage at Rams Head too. I'll still go back even if it's the same setup though. I like Psycho Las Vegas better venue wise, but the lineups leave a lot to be desired. As shitty as Baltimore is as a destination, still my favorite place to be on memorial day weekend.
  17. Honestly, it's better that way. This year was the first I'd done the Edison lot and didn't think it really added much. Perfectly happy with just the 2 indoor venues.
  18. Torche - Restarter - saw these cats last night for the first time. Have always enjoyed their stuff. Highly entertaining show. Melvins tonight. Finally getting some shows back around local.
  19. Impaled Nazarene - Eight Headed Serpent
  20. Dissection - Reinkaos Inquisition - Obscure Verses for the Multiverse
  21. An Australian Shiraz has to be my favorite type of wine, although I do enjoy a good Willamette Valley Pinot. I think the best Shiraz I've had is The Boxer (Mollydooker Wines). Of course, limited to what I can get in my small unpolished part of the US.
  22. If Les and Larry were still involved in Blind Illusion, I'd probably be all over that release. Had no idea they had reactivated the band. Out of curiosity, how is it? Bethlehem - Dark Metal
  23. Necrodeath just announced for Metal Threat next year in Chicago. Impaled Nazarene, Morgal, and Dead Congregation with more to be announced. No MDF in 23, so this looks like the fest to attend. Slayer - Seasons
  24. I'm with you Mark. Too many things to worry about these days to be quite as passionate about this as Surge, GG, and Deadie, but I do enjoy reading their thoughts. These are the sort of well thought out discussions that really separate this group out from many others. Dudes that put actual thought behind their position and appreciate difference of opinion in a mature way. Always helps me to form a reasonable opinion about something I've never really thought about. I'm much more of a casual metal afficianado than the heavyweights mentioned above. Normies probably wouldn't see it that way, but perspective. What I would say is that if all new metal ceased today, I'd still have more than enough out there to keep me occupied for the rest of my days. I enjoy discovering new music, but that doesn't have to be absolutely new, just something I've never heard before. And there's a metric fuckton of it out there. I would have a problem with a lack of shows or a plethora of shitty shows, because I probably enjoy live shows more than recorded music. I live in a relatively small area and go to shows that don't generally attract many scene tourists. So I haven't seen much of what Surge and Deadie are pointing out firsthand. What I have seen doesn't bother me too much. I've always looked at bands like Arch Enemy and In Flames as entry level bands. Attracts new listeners that would never stick with metal if the bar was at Archgoat or something equally gnarly. Those bands keep the fire burning and attract money/exposure for acts that are a bit more hardcore. Think along the lines of Oath of Cruelty (great fucking badass Houston band) on the same bill with Riot (a band I don't care much about). People there for Riot get exposed to something cool they'd never find on their own. Plenty of examples but that's the first that came to mind. Tours and fests, where bands earn their stripes, need those big names we might not care for down here in the inner dungeons to be successful enough to keep the thing going. So I've never felt that the success of Lamb of God or Slipknot and their many imitators would threaten my uniquely weird preference in extreme music. All metal is good to someone just like food. The presence of crappy mall food court quality burger joints hasn't affected my ability to find a truly good burger within a few minutes of my house.
