  1. My new Candlemass - Nightfall album. On 'The Well of Souls' at the moment. Glad I got this. Probably should have checked these out earlier but better late than never
  2. Hey Ghouly! Nice to meet you to. It is good to have girls on the forum. I've met other girls irl but they were into emo stuff and metalcore and some things like Iron Maiden. But not many who had a good knowledge of 70s hard rock and metal. Yes everyone here is pretty cool. And helpful too with recommendations. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
  3. Well, they had a live band playing covers - mostly chart stuff and some classics (mostly of the pop music variety though). At the nightclub obviously it's mostly electronic dance and pop - lady gaga, Rihanna etc. They have different club nights - one is underground stuff but not of the metal/rock variety; another is old school pop from the 90s, 80s, 70s and 60s. They don't have a night for rock/metal. You may hear indie band like Arctic Monkeys, The Killers et al. Possibly some post-punk bands but that's at a night club in town. There is a rock and metal society which puts gigs on and sometimes takes over the university radio to play metal. There is an alternative music night club which has a mix of things - hip hop, house, dubstep on a monday, pop on a Wednesday which is when most go because most people aren't into rock/metal stuff. Other nights it's mainly alternative rock, grunge, nu metal, metalcore, emo and some metal classics. Wish there was a a better place to go really, but that's the only 'metal/rock' venue there is. They have gigs regularly though.
  4. Yes you certainly have. Besides, it'll be good to to listen to some music to my liking today since I was at my university society end of year ball and the students union nightclub last night. There's only so much of the music you hear in most nightclubs that I can handle - no matter how much I've had to drink.
  5. I had a look? Is it the one on youtube? I've watched the first half hour so far.
  6. Oh yes - what torture to endure! No problem with that though. :
  7. Not metal related, but this is one of the most interesting and strangest things I've heard:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbqyIxcLwjoIt's a German medieval song (although I think the music is modern, played in a medieval style) taking the 'dance of death' theme popular in art at the time. I came across it when researching my essay on the impact of the black death. Basically, death is addressing the different people - the king, the cleric, the carpenter, the usurer and mankind in general that none can escape him , no matter whether rich or poor; pious or immoral. Bit morbid, but fascinating too. This video has a crude translation, which is fortunate as it's in medieval German so probably not easy to understand. I do beginner's German so it's kind of of interest to me.
  8. Okay at this rate I'm going to be busy the whole week just listening to stuff !https://metalforum.com/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif But hey, I'm in that kind of mood at the moment. It's funny, I was really keen to explore metal more last summer/autumn but seemed to have stagnated a bit. Got my interest back now it seems!
  9. Really liking Death at the at the moment. Listened to Leprosy and Symbolic, thanks to your suggestions guys in the new acquisitions thread. I quite love it actually.
  10. Yes certainly is probably a case of not hearing enough. Thanks for the suggestions guys!
  11. I've not listened to much death metal. I've heard some songs by Cannibal Corpse, Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom. But I've not been too keen on them, except the latter, but only partially. I like Bodom's music but I think I prefer the vocals to still be intelligible. Amon Amarth's vocals are clearer so I can take to them better. I think it may be a case of listening to an entire album through a few times tbh.
  12. I'm quite interested to see how this turns out. JudasPriest.com :: Redeemer Of Souls - Judas Priest New Album
  13. Just had a look at that. Looks really good. Hmm. Not listened to this band before. I don't normally like Death metal but somehow I find this alright!
  14. Just got an original Gull Records 1976 Judas Priest Sad wing of Destiny on Vinyl! Been having a bit of an album buying binge actually. Quite a few that I've been getting round to purchasing actually: Candlemass - Nightfall Megadeth - Peace sells... But who's buying and Rust in peace Metallica - Master of Puppets Deep Purple In Rock Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Judas Priest - Sad wings of destiny (CD) Also looking to get these soon: Rainbow - Rising Bathory - Under the sing of the Black mark and Hammerheart Venom - Black Metal Sanctuary and Nevermore stuff
  15. Yeah there weren't many proper metalheads - or at least not many with a knowledge of earlier bands. Mostly they were metalcore and emo types and some who dabbled in the most well known metal bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica. It was quite funny once. I met another girl who said she liked rock and metal like me. She liked Led Zeppelin (well, Robert Plant at least but I understand that. I only really like long haired guys as well but she said that she was a big Metallica fan yet when I asked about their first four albums she'd not listened to them - only the black album. Nothing wrong with that of course but still. Some people at my school didn't know who the Rolling Stones were so you see what I'm dealing with here. Apart from the small group of metalcore/emo and nu-metal kids, most everyone else was into pop with very little idea about classic rock let alone metal. I made friends with some musicians at my next school (sixth form in the uk - to do a levels which are entrance exams for university). But still not too many actual metalheads. Though quite a few classic rock fans - The Doors, Pink Floyd etc. This may be me to some extent! But I like more metal than that so I always say that I like both, but mostly what you might call 'classic ' metal. I'm expanding things though. I like finding new music. It's funny, I never met a proper metalhead who knew about 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s metal of different sub-genres and the history of the metal (lots of classic rock as well which I think a lot of 18 year olds don't tend to know about such as Jethro Tull, UFO, Uriah Heep etc) until I moved into uni halls last September and now I live with one - He's my flatmate!
  16. Are there many other metal fans where the rest of you live? People at my school were many into Slipknot, Linkin Park and Metallica's black album etc. There were some other girls but they were mainly into Avenged Sevenfold and metalcore as well as stuff like Bullet for my Valentine, My chemical romance Evanescence etc. I never liked that kind of thing. I liked the old school stuff like Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin (although not all of their's is heavy) and Priest.
  17. MP3s are good for convenience but I prefer to have an actual physical copy of an album. Being able to look at the artwork - one of the best things about CDs and records in particular is the artwork on the booklet or sleeve. I love 70s records as they're so interesting. Like Jethro Tull's Living in the past and Thick as a brick - the former is like a book and the latter is like a real newspaper! Same with books, e-readers are convenient, but there's something about actually having the book. Feels like you have a real physical collection rather than just a digital one. Also shows more commitment too I think as you've actually bothered to get the real thing - but buying digital copes is still supportive of bands of course. It's just that I like to have hard copies if my favorite albums. I'd like to get records too, I have my dad's though
  18. Thanks! Yeah I agree about Metallica's first four albums. The black album is good but it seems to be lacking in something - like it doesn't have as much 'life' in it and the rawness is gone. Mustaine does come across badly sometimes. I study history. Doing medieval stuff at the minute so lot's of barbarian tribes, Romans, Vikings, battles, dynastic rivalries etc. edit: I do a module in literature as well - poetry through the ages so we've looked at medieval things like the Arthurian Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf (both in translation obviously); the obligatory Shakespeare, John Donne and the romantic poets; war poetry etc. Also a beginner's German module too.
