Don't listen to Maiden or Angel Witch, the vocals are dealbreakers for me. Same goes for that band Satan everybody seems to go crazy for too. Even setting the vocal harmonies aside, I always thought Angel Witch was pretty lame, their thin production makes them sound weak. Their eponymous song with the endlessly repeating chorus is so damn annoying I want to reach through the speakers and strangle that dude.

It is undeniably true that any 80's extreme metal band you care to name was heavily influenced by thrash, but that doesn't make their albums thrash.

But again, their number 2 and 3 80's thrash albums To Mega Therion and Scream Bloody Gore aren't even thrash so I stopped reading there.

Big part of the problem is if you look up bands like Trivium, Machine Head and Revocation on Metal Archives thrash is mentioned in the genre descriptions. So n00bs who don't know any better see that and think if it says so on M-A then it must be true. I myself bought a Trivium album almost 20 years ago after reading in a magazine album review that said they were carrying the torch for modern thrash. Which obviously turned out to be a complete crock of shit, so needless to say I traded that album right back in on my next visit to the record store.

I owe my love of crust and stenchcore entirely to him from another forum we used to post on together back in the late 00's. Before I ran into Marko all I knew about hardcore was the old 80's UK & NYHC bands and crossover from back in the day. I was not familiar with the term crust, had never heard Amebix, didn't even know what d-beat meant 15 years ago. Nowadays crust is my 3rd most listened to genre after black and death. As usual you have things exactly backwards Orca. M-A has the genre correct for once, but when us genre-aware individuals call something 'black/thrash' or 'blackened speed metal' we are talking about thrash or speed metal that's been blackened to some extent. Could be a little blackened, could be a lot. In Wraith's case it's been very gently blackened in the vocal dept. Just blackened enough so that I can listen to and enjoy it. Now for the stuff that leans more black than thrash, we'd call that thrashy black metal, or just plain black metal, as most black metal already has a certain amount of thrash baked into it. In the same way that thrash aready has the hardcore baked into it. The exception to this of course would be the kinds of black metal Doc listens to that aren't actually black metal.
