I only have heard Focus and Kindly Bent To Free Us.  I think the latter is a solid modern prog rock/metal album and I prefer it to Focus by a long chalk.  Kindly Bent To Free Us is great background music which might seem an insult but isn’t meant to be.  It fills my head regardless of what I am doing without being intrusive.

I agree. I can get into Focus sometimes if I'm in the mood for it, but it's not often at that.
On the other hand, Cynic's '90 and 1991 demos are the bee's nuts.

With you here.  That alien/robot vocal effect is really annoying and as much as I can recognise and acknowledge the effort it falls on design over content.  Highly overrated album.

Cynic - Focus ...I wish I liked this album. On one hand there's the amazing musicianship, great parts, lots of cool ideas, a really unique take on death metal. On the other hand, the songs feel incoherent, a lot of the great ideas are unsupported, and the vocal melodies grate on my nerves. Been trying since I first heard it in 1996, and it's still not working for me.

Bouncing around in "3D" in some distressed font over a computer-generated background can make pretty much anything look bad. I didn't watch the Incantation vid but I've seen so goddamn many variations on that idea, and it detracts from the song every single time.

Animated lyric videos are the fucking worst. I hate them so much. That "everybody look at me/follow the bouncing ball" shit ruins the song and the lyrics for me. I always put up a different tab or minimize the window. Honestly I don't even like "real" music videos much anymore... everybody get off my lawn!

Not bad, I usually take a punt on anything Incantation release nowadays.  You know exactly what you are getting with them and that’s not always a bad thing if their existing formula works.
 
P.s. I have a real problem with lyric videos though.  Does anybody else find them really distracting as the vocals are all you find yourself focusing on?  Had to turn away from the screen to just listen properly.  Fuck I am weird.
