Underrated or Unknown Metal

Recommended Posts

Metal isn't really in the popular vein these days. People tend not to know much about it and only a few bands manage to get people's attention. As metalheads, we pride ourselves on finding the unknown and bringing it to the fore. This thread is intended for people to talk about any underrated or unknown musician or band which they think ought to get more publicity, etc. I've got a lot of them but I'll wait for some posts first.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Oh I could give you a few. Subterranean Masquerade definitely fall into this category. They're a brilliant band whose albums are nearly impossible to find, except over the internet, but my parents are a little... anxious about internet shopping, so that's never going to happen while I live with them, and they have so few seeds on any downloading torrent that I actually couldn't download them after 6 months. Gardenian are definitely underrated, only a couple of albums are around by these guys, but they are the true embodiment of high quality metal. Zyklon are a blackened death metal band that released 3 albums in their time. I can recommend the song "Psyklon Aeon" Imperanon is highly recommended... I'm not sure about their popularity, but I'm of the impression they aren't well known. Hieronymus Bosch is a tech death band that are definitely worth checking out. Catamenia is a bit of black metal that I love that might need a bit more popularity Noumena are a brilliant Finnish band that have heavy death growl vocals, and mixed with an overlay of clean, female vocals in a few of their songs. The song "Triumph and Loss" is definitely my favourite of their brilliant works. Suffocation aren't very popular where I'm from, but their brutal stylings are enough to make me very happy to listen, and headbang along. Tvangeste are similar to Cradle of Filth. Definitely worth checking them out if you're a fan of that sort of thing. I'm not 100% sure if these are all underrated or unknown, but I know a few are very underrated and very few of my friends from the Australian Metal Community as a whole know of them.I recommend looking at all of them, and enjoying thoroughly. I hope that helps :D

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Well if you're in Australia, there are actually a LOT of good Australian bands, like Psycroptic, Mephistopheles (jazz metal w00t) and others. Look up the YouTube video "Technical Death Metal Showdown: Russia vs.Australia" Very cool and a lot of good bands on there. In the meantime I'll give these other groups a shot.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Sounds good, I'll take a look now. Australia though, I've noticed, has got some good metal, but on the whole it's spoiled by a lot of core music, all of which is so similar to Parkway Drive that I cannot help but feel as though our industry is ailing. I hope you enjoy those bands. A lot of them are my little secret enjoyment... I'm the only one that knows them well, and I'm happy for it.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Australia has one of the most diverse metal scenes I can think of with everything from The Amenta to the classics like Bestial Warlust and Destroyer 666. Atomizer don't really get a lot of credit in my opinion, as everyone is to busy listening to hacks like Portal, Bestial Warlust as well are one of the better acts from Australia with just two albums. Ulcerate are another great band from there hailing with their atmospheric brand of technical death metal. I really came just to recommend Akitsa though. :)

Sounds good' date=' I'll take a look now. Subterranean Masquerade was interesting, and certainly progressive but not something I'd listen to a whole lot. Noumena weren't bad, I liked their guitar melodies a great deal and they had a nice groove. Gardenian was also quite good, they seemed to understand the value of technicality, and of ambient sound as well. But my two favorites were Hieronymus Bosch and Zyklon. I loved the unflinching power and technicality these two bands had to offer. Thank you very much for these recommendations!

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Be'lakor are brilliant. I cannot fault them. That's definitely a suggestion I'd be willing to do a lot of looking into. As for Sympathy, I am yet to look them up but I can do that soon :) Speaking of Canadians though, have you guys heard of The Agonist. I'd be surprised if you hadn't, since, you all seem to know your music, but hey, if you don't, I recommend them. The vocalist is a woman with purple hair. Just thought I'd throw in that last part. :D

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Yeah, I've heard them... I can't stand them. While I'm here, I'll also recommend the Slovenian band Neurotech. They aren't very technical, but they do make very good industrial metal with great atmosphere.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal

Actually' date=' I did look up Neurotech, and I think they are REALLY good. Definitely recommend them. Not sure about their style as such, or what I would call it, but I do really like them. They're very unique for an obscure, unknown metal band.[/quote'] Pleased you like them. In the meantime, Shangren is really cool. I am quite glad to see a Chinese band holding the folk metal banner! RCmjw-PtQj8 tAvWPvse4ac Plus, I can play the opening melody to this one on my guitar.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Well, when X Japan, Galneryus and Loudness are all that you hear of the Asian metal scene I really don't blame you for being skeptical. I might as well bring Amogh Symphony to everyone's attention. They're an instrumental prog/techno band from India. Just skip to 1:15 on this; there's an annoying spoken interlude which takes a while to finish. iPAdsGsDSKY Skip to 0:54 for this one. 0mRCqSNrxso

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal They aren't bad.... they're just not my style. Although I have to say, they kinda remind me of a tech-version of some sort of post-rock band, like Daturah, or Maybeshewill... and of course, a little heavier. ALSO Since we're talking unknowns, or underrated, bands, I'd recommend a black metal band that I just realised that I didn't mention before: Graveworm. They're pretty good. Look up their cover of the REM song "Losing my Religion". It's great.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal And I just ordered their album Anagogic Tyranny! Well, I did check out Graveworm. I'm not a big fan of black metal stylistically but I can't fault them on much except a bit of monotonous drumming here and there. Anyhow, this band is just getting good publicity now, but they still should be way bigger. North African prog! \m/ 6_pFZnAETyw These Tunisian musicians are one of my favorite progressive metal bands, right up there with Threshold, Redemption, Seventh Wonder, 7days and Evergrey.

Re: Underrated or Unknown Metal Someone already suggested Tvangeste, and I agree. They need some more fame. Crystal Eyes is a heavy metal band from Sweden, I've been listening to them a lot recently. I would suggest the songs Gods of the World, Fire of Hades, and Halls of Valhalla. Crimson Glory has a traditional metal sound, but they have some amazing songs. I would suggest listening to Lost Reflection and Queen of the Masquerade. A few more bands: Sacred Steel, Brocas Helm, Wolf, Silent Call, Turbowolf

Well, I do like Crystal Eyes, but I don't own any of their material. In the meantime, I can't connect to Crimson Glory at all...they are rather antithetical to my tastes. They sound somewhat like Queensryche (and I like that band), but as a power metal band they don't make much sense to me. 'Heart of Steel' wasn't bad in my opinion but I thought it sounded a lot like Queensryche. I seriously think this band deserves more publicity - they've got a lot of albums out but they're not really well known yet. On a couple of their older albums (this one included), Kai Hansen of Helloween is on lead guitar. CQpf88lXF9Q

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
