TAAKEN - På mørke stier 7"EP

PromobildForen.jpg

On TAAKEN's debut ep "På mørke stier", German Odal's homonymous mastermind presents us with two tracks of raging elitist black art.
What you get is Black Metal uncompromisingly worshipping the old Northern gods of the genre, nothing more, nothing less - pounding drums,
ice-cold riffing and a rasping hateful voice, held together by a proud and passionate dignity that can not be caught by any lines
in promotional texts like this, but must be felt, lived and breathed, with all anger and solemnity that you're capable of.
It's exactly this torrential attitude and conviction that sets TAAKEN apart and poisons your veins with black freezing
venom in each and every second of this seven inch wax damnation. From the underground, for the underground.

Sol Records releases this testament of grimness as 7" ep, limited to 166 handnumbered copies, mixed and mastered at Black Wave Studios.

ETERNAL MAJESTY - Black Metal Excommunication LP

spacer.png

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s several split releases with protagonists like Judas Iscariot, Antaeus and Krieg as well as their masterful debut full-length “From War to Darkness” (2003) made ETERNAL MAJESTY a household name not only in the French Black Metal scene, but a constant deliverer of pestilence throughout that meaningful period of underground radicalization. More than 14 years after their second album “Wounds of Hatred and Slavery”, E. M. complete their trilogy of terror with “Black Metal Excommunication”. Still, this is not your typical miserable ‘comeback album’ banking on something long lost, but an independent and distinct landmark of a band continuing its own path and identity. While its exquisite riffing, confident songwriting, outbreaks of furious aggression and the band’s highly intensive trademark vocal performances preserve strong nostalgic glances, “Black Metal Excommunication” does not feel like living in the past but culminates in something severely personal, straight and precise, heavily layered with a diabolical gravitas that is longing for a dark escapist journey.

Deviant Records is proud to handle the 12”LP release of “Black Metal Excommunication”. Mastered for this lim. 300 vinyl release (incl. poster and insert) by Henri Sorvali (Trollhouse).

ENTHRONED - Promo 94 CD

DEVPAST002_EnthronedForen.jpg

In the first half of the 1990s it was ENTHRONED, along with their comrades of Ancient Rites, that put Belgium on the map of a still restless and exciting Black Metal geography. It's not inappropriate to say that the 25 mins of material which constitute this raging and utterly evil "Promo 94" has had its fair share in aforementioned emergence. Thus, Medieval Prophecy Rec., who'll handle the vinyl version, and Deviant Rec., taking care of the CD press (lim. 500) as part of our Nocturnal Legacy series, are proud to present this testimony of a past but not forgotten time again, in a form that breathes utmost respect for its significance.
While the musical content speaks for itself and is a must-have in any well-sorted collection, it's our pleasure to accompany it with a 36-pages CD booklet including old flyers, photos, and interviews with Lord Sabathan, Tsebaoth as well as Nornagest, reflecting on this meaningful period in Black Metal history and ENTHRONED's place therein.

- CD Edition limited to 500 copies

SOMBRE FIGURES - Streams of Decay CD

Following their contribution to the "Eternal Black Metal" split LP with compatriots Blood Red Fog, SOMBRE FIGURES unleash their debut album "Streams of Decay" with enormously malicious intentions. Over the course of 7 atrocities, the band here once again spawns some serious inhuman Black Metal terror, channelled into an obscure maze of unsettling & dreadful melodies beyond a terrifying & noisy sound-radicalism

the first SOMBRE FIGURES - Streams of Decay reviews came in:

Reviews1Foren.jpg

Death, darkness and decadence seep through every malignant, putrid pore of foul Finnish duo Sombre Figures’ bluntly morose, haunting debut full-length,
‘Streams of Decay’ –  a bleak recording from the forest’s edge which reeks of the stench of decomposition

The thing is, these songs have a way of sticking in the head, and they turn out to have individual personalities ... it’s like passing through a rogues’ gallery in hell.

Sombre Figures präsentieren BM im hochgeschwindigkeitsbereich, nur selten drosselt man das Tempo! Technisch versteht die Band ihr Handwerk und erinnert an alte Marduk oder Streams of Blood! Kaufempfehlung!

NEW RELEASES

>>>Deviant Records<<<

Blood Red Fog - Fields of Sorrow LP

PromoBildForen.jpg

As the fog rises the rivers of blood will burst their banks, and the world will drown in their own decline. With each release in more than 15 years of activity BLOOD RED FOG more and more cemented their status as constantly fascinating, ever genuine force of darkness that nourishes itself from the eternal black flame. The band's fifth album "Fields of Sorrow" is yet another, maybe their most impressive evidence of how excellent these men connect skillful songwriting and a state of being deeply lost in a possessed, trancelike state of creativity. Over the course of more than 50 minutes each of these five heavily grievous songs, framed by intro and outro as well as pierced by a psychedelic intermezzo, breathes manifold moments of cold majesty and contagious gloominess, confidence and profoundness, obscurity and passion, shadows, misery and pain.

Cold Earth - Your Misery, My Triumph LP 3rd Edition

PromoBild3rdForen.jpg

COLD EARTH is a project consisting of several members from our very own Sol Records circle. The sole purpose of this project is a nostalgic glance at the radical late 90s / early 00s Black Metal movement, and paying tribute to this particular era, its atmosphere and its protagonists. Embodied in grim and unpleasant Black Metal that transpires the atmosphere of an abandoned cemetery in autumn, "Your Misery, My Triumph" is an homage to an intense, somewhat strange yet magical time that significantly shaped some North-Eastern teens-or-twens perception of the underground, and the ideals that they embrace ever since. We know this has been done thousands of times before, but we'll always prefer raw, unsophisticated but honest nostalgia to any degenerated attempts of 'individuality'.

Nigrum Tenebris - I am the Serpent Digipack CD

PromoBildForen.jpg

Sol Records is proud to release "I Am The Serpent", the debut album of German Black Metal duo NIGRUM TENEBRIS. Expect nothing but uncompromising Black Metal that exhales purity and coldness through every square inch of its pale skin, at times reminiscent of early 90s Swedish demo-era madness. The hateful and disgusted vocal performance is the perfect companion not only for the music, but also for the band's unpolished and aggressive lyrics about suffering and anti-religious abhorrence, futility and a nihilistic longing for nothingness.

  • Our picks

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
