  1. I randomly picked up "Hammer of the North" recently and have been fucking hammering that shit everyday at least twice.  Great trad metal sound, memorable and catchy with appropriate use of melody.  I even found myself sat singing along with it on my headphones this morning on the train.  For the first few times I tried Grand Magus I couldn't get past the vocals but they really clicked this time around. The album itself could prob do with a trim but the standout tracks really carry it well on the whole.

I remember the conditions I had when I was moving around a ton, just a handful of CDs unpacked. There's something great about only having a few albums available, because you get to know them so well. Very happy with my 128gb micro SD card, though...

This beautiful CD just showed up in the mail, already listened to the mp3s but I'm looking forward to basking in the glory of higher-quality audio. And such a sweet packaging job, it even came with a poster of the cover art. I'm stoked.

On my other internet haunt someone is referring to this as "blackened death metal"??? Am I missin something?

  3. I was a fan of the UK series Utopia. Conspiracy, violence, interesting soundtrack and  vibrant visuals. Still pissed that it was cancelled after 2 seasons with no resolution to the story.

I thought there was only one series? Off in search I go of series 2.

  4. Great news BAN.

In job related news I screwed up my job interview on Friday by completely missing the red herring in the assessment that was a sheet of data. In the grand scheme of things it meant nothing to the actual core issue (role play) and I focused on it far too much in my four hour assessment. Still, I like my current job and there is no harm in trying, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'm glad you're getting into it. I think it's an amazing step forward from Colored Sands. They tweaked every aspect of their approach, from the writing to the production. I've been listening to it daily.

What is really clever with is it is the fact that although you can easily discern the movements in there by simple intro/outro plotting, none of it would work as seperate pieces. Will explore more in my review but the drumming is simply brilliant, it is simple without getting lost (which is a challenge in itself) yet it is the perfect accompaniment to the strings. I can only liken it to jazz drumming, not in terms of sound or style but in the sheer considered nature of the delivery.

  6. Have a week away next week with work during this time i shall be attempting further unpicking of the amazing "Pleiades Dust" for purpose of review. I haven't decided which format i will buy it in but digital will not do this level of mastery justice.

Meanwhile, i just picked up Grand Magus "Hammer of the North" as it struck me as great driving OR drinking music with its solid riffs and epic idlings. Also just picked up Drudkh "Slavonic Chronicles" which has little presence online in terms of reviews yet seems to be very much the familiar "Blood in our Wells" sound of Drudkh doing 2 covers.

    Qrixkuor - Three Devils Dance

Cool vibe and some very enjoyable riffs, if not breaking the mold established by a number of other OSDM groups. It's almost a Grave Miasma ripoff at times. The murky production here is holding it back and I wish the vocals had more balls.

With you completely on the production, their demo was terrible (but you can forgive a demo) on the production front.  I think I am enjoying it so much because of Grave Miasma to be honest as I tend to play Qrixkuor after "Endless Pilgrimage". On its own probably not as remarkable but doing an established format well enough.  The other forum I frequent knows nothing of Grave Miasma, might write an artist overview for the blog and transpose it over to the forums I frequent.  Wrote "Endless Pilgrimage" review last night on the blog will post it here later.
