....some really great atmospheric BM from South America.....

Porcupine Tree lost me right after Anesthetize. They had been hit or miss for several years, but really went off the cliff after that. The early 90's stuff, especially The Sky Moves Sideways and Voyage 34 are good psychedelic prog. Pretentious, oh yeah, but pretty good regardless and not nearly as bad as the later stuff or his solo work.

Ihsahn's solo stuff isn't bad at all, just not all that memorable after AngL. I find bits and pieces of each album I like, but I think they would be better as EPs.

While they never fall into the underappreciated category at Casa de Navy, I agree with everything you said. They were intelligent black metal for the musician if you will. As a bass player and music geek, I really liked what they were doing from the first time I heard them (probably '96 or so). Ihsahn was an excellent composer in those days. His solo work....meh. The first few were good, but the later stuff is forgettable.
And that Krieg album is great shit. One of the better examples of early USBM. Might throw some on myself.

....I've gotten the impression, over recent years, EMPEROR has fallen into the underappreciated category....for me, while they don't get anywhere near as much playing time as DARKTHRONE or MAYHEM, I rate them right up there with both.....they definitely have the best composer (Ihsahn) of all of the early BM bands....technical prowess and lyrical ability....
....I also don't consider them to be a symphonic BM band...but whatever....progressive...yeah....but the symphonic label always seemed to be a knock or at best a backhanded compliment to a band, in my eyes....

I really love the Understones s/t album and have purchased it multiple times. I first found it at a used record store as a teenager. Unfortunately, I brought it to the community college I went to out of high school and it slid behind a concrete bench built into a wall. The bench had a crack between the seat and the wall just wide enough for a record to slide down. I'm sure it's still there today, 25 years later.
I eventually got the CD version that has the bonus tracks(I think live and b-sides of singles or something). I was so blown away by "Emergency Cases" that I listened to that song probably 10 times in a row.
For my money, one of the best punk albums of all time.
