I signed up to expand my metal repertoire as well as maybe have some good music discussion.

Iron Maiden

Iced Earth 
Demons and Wizards 
Fear Factory

Megadeth 
Bullet for my Valentine 
Bands I couldn't get into but might try again :

Shadows Fall
My tastes aren't limited to metal though, I pretty much like all kinds of Rock, but I want to expand my metal horizons

You should definitely check out Nevermore, my favorite is "Dreaming Neon Black" but I also enjoy "The Politics Of Ecstasy", "This Godless Endeavor", and "Enemies Of Reality". The debut album from Warrell Dane's previous band Sanctuary is really good as well. I'm a huge fan of early Queensryche, and lately I've also been warming up to Crimson Glory's first two albums and Fates Warning (especially No Exit and Parallels). And make sure you check out Control Denied - the brainchild of the guy behind Death, it's basically late-period Death with power metal vocals instead of harsh screams. I'm still very picky about prog/power vocals, so there's a lot of stuff out there that I haven't explored properly yet, but I bet some of that would appeal to you, and there are a few other people here who could steer you towards more.

That's a good amount of gateway material. I'd suggest you listen to as much as possible and see what sticks. Feel free to dig through the genre-specific subforums for recommendations other people have posted, and if you can't find a thread about what you're looking for, start one of your own. Is there something in particular that you're drawn to? Something you can't stand?
