Akercocke rules, and Renaissance has become one of my favorites from them. I probably listen to it more than any of theirs except Words. It took me a couple listens to warm up to the more vulnerable and awkward-sounding vocal parts - not usually something I'd be too excited about - but once it all clicked I felt like they were perfect. Great to hear them sounding inspired and cohesive again. Antichrist is the one I haven't connected with, I can't seem to get past feeling like it's a little disjointed and aimless. I go in and out of listening to them regularly, but I've been in the mood a lot lately.

The vocals are what get me. Vulnerable and awkward sounding is the perfect description of Jason's vocals. May give it a spin today since it's been a while.

  2. Alright, I'm in you crazy bastard as long as you promise there will be goats on the UFO.

I had no previous experience with Krakauer, but I've since added Into Thin Air to my list. I really dig his style.

Religion in general and especially cults fascinate me too. I just can't see how people can put their heads in a place where any of it makes sense. I've known plenty of very religious people in my time, many of them Mormon. They seem like very reasonable intelligent people. Drill in a bit to what they believe with little actual thought and the perspective changes drastically. Hard to take anyone serious that can't think their way out of an easily opened cage.

  3. Just finished:

Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. It's an exploration of Fundamentalist Mormons, the history of the Mormon church, and the murder of a woman and baby. Quite an interesting read.

    Currently reading:

King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hoschild. It's a history of the colonization and exploitation of the Congo by the titular king and his cohorts. Only about 20% in.

    Recently:

Spillover: Animal Infection s and the Next Human Pandemic by David Quammen

Dreamland: The True Take of America's Opiate Epidemic by Sam Quinones

Also slowly working on The Gormenghast Trilogy, but I may have bit off more than I wanted. I feel like I enjoy historical and non-fiction books much more these days. Most of the fiction books I've attempted lately have failed to hold my interest.

  4. I'm still holding my MDF tickets from last year/this year too hoping it will go on next year. Psycho is a chance to hang out with the boys for me, something I rarely pass up these days. I'm going to Vegas next weekend for that very reason. Was supposed to see the Scorpions, a band I don't care much about post-UJR era, but the show got cancelled. Since we don't get to hang but 2-3x per year, we all said the hell with it and decided to go anyway.

Mass Destruction's lineup this year is decent, but the promoter has indicated that there will be some additions. He's in the same spot as MDF but on a smaller scale, so he's got a lot more to lose. I'm going to hang with the boys but also to support him and try to keep the only decent fest in my area going.

Having trouble imagining you being emotionally engaged T-Doc. You seem far too rational and low key and stoic for that. Navy as well, he's pretty calm and low key. Hungarino though that's another story, I could totally see him getting exceedingly emotional on the regualr.

I would agree though that music provokes a strong emotional response, that's mostly why we listen to it. I was just saying that certain bands or albums from decades past have the ability to stir up a strong nostalgic response as well. But as you know, 90% of what I listen to is from the current calendar year or from the last few years and for this music there is no nostalgia attachged so no transporting back to the 70's or 80's, new music is pure visceral emotion.

My range of emotions are fuck yeah, fuck you, fuck it, and let's fuck. Metal (and music in general) tends to satisfy all of them. So I guess that's being emotionally engaged. I think I'm in the same place as TG, but I just do not have the prose to describe it that way.

And Hungdog Millionaire - the big guy says all is forgiven. Just 27 goats and 50 lashes this time. He was in a pretty good mood.

Just wait until you guys find the "all time favorite" and "desert island" and "top ten" threads and copy all this over.

My current top 5 metal bands, like over the past two weeks:

    Abigor

    Ad Nauseam

    Akercocke

    Deathspell Omega

...and Titan Force, I guess? Pagan's Mind? Something goofy.

Oh we'll get there. We are professional list makers sir. Just don't ask the Goatmaster General to do it in a timely fashion.

Curious on your choice of Akercocke as a current top 5. What are your thoughts on Renaissance? I love me some 'cocke. Definitely an all time band for me (just outside the top 10), but I've been somewhat lukewarm on it.

Incantation - Sect Of Vile Divinities

Can't stop listening to this album lately, think it's my favourite Incantation release ...which is pretty impressive for a band that has been around this long.

I may have to revisit. I bought it on release and spun it once or twice, but it didn't grab me. I always go back to Diabolical Conquest.

  9. Man I need a live gig in the worst sorta way. The next thing on my calendar this year is supposed to be Psycho Las Vegas in late August. It looks like it will still go on, but with a modified line-up. I doubt the European bands will be playing which sucks. There are plenty of bands I would like to see from the States, but damn it Mercyful Fate (never seen) and Emperor (awesome live last year when I saw them) in the same weekend? That would have been the highlight of the year for sure. Only other thing on my calendar this year would be Mass Destruction in November which I would expect to go on as planned. It's usually N. American bands so travel shouldn't be an issue.

I'm digging this forum so far. I know a lot of the younger crowd go for Discord style chat boards, but I just never really cared for that. I just feel like I miss too much of the conversation.

So how is the new Wode Navy? I'm almost afraid to go listen for myself, I've heard troubling reports that it's not the same ole Wode we know and love. I trust you to give it to me straight. I can take it.

It's not Servants of the Countercosmos, but it's not as bad as the latest UADA or anything. I pre-ordered based on the fact it was Wode. I mean no way it won't be good right? I wouldn't have bought it had I a chance to listen to the whole thing first. Every damn time I pre-order it ends up being a disappointment.

I can't see you liking it.

Literally an addiction that seems to release metal-enjoyment endorphins into the blood stream. Pressure release, a middle figure to life's frustrations and a celebration of mortality and a way to rage against and embrace the absurdity of the void.

You forgot Satan. He's going to be upset.

I finally started warming up to them after hearing "July Morning" blaring through terrible speakers at a nearby liquor store. Something about the speaker cone distortion really brought it home for me. Any albums in particular that you'd recommend?

Sweet Freedom and Demons & Wizards are all you need. I do like The Magician's Birthday and Very Heavy, Very Humble but I rarely reach for them.

Picked up the vinyl reissues of Bolt Thrower's For Victory & Mercenary and Mayhem - Dawn of the Black Hearts from Hell's Headbangers. Not that I don't already have the digital, cd, and surely the tapes (somewhere), but I didn't have them on vinyl. Oh, and the Spectral Wound vinyl is on the way too.

    For April:

Eternal Champion - Ravening Iron (finally showed up - ordered in November)

Wode - Burn in Many Mirrors

Osees - Live at Henry Miller Library Big Sur

    Nekromantheon - Visions of Trismegistos

    Haapoja - Haapoja

Altar of Eden - The Grotto Screams

    The Wraith - Gloom Ballet

    The Gnosis - The Gnosis

    Yuka Zolo - Bleed

    Hollow Mirrors - s/t

Hallas - Tales of Future Past (vinyl because I already had the cd but needed the vinyl)

My name is Don and I am an addict.

Hahaha, raping their instruments with no thought of making music, just some trash thrown together, eh?

I think if you were to listen a little closer you might find there are indeed many musical ideas present in most black metal. But it's not for everyone I suppose.

This sounds melodic as fuck to me. Probably my favorite black metal album of the last decade. A masterpiece of lush soundscapes. Couldn't get enough of this one back in '15. It's not black & roll like Satyricon though so be warned.

Murg fucking rules. I was blasting Stravan first thing this morning much to the dismay of my 90 year old neighbors.

Maybe not everyone's idea of black metal, but I'm really digging the new Mork (Katedralan). Riffs upon riffs upon riffs.

Another Metal-fi refuge and hope to make this place wicked gnarly and dripping with goat blood!

Pretty much everything I will post is tongue in cheek if it seems ridiculous it probably is, but I am a big believer in civil discourse mutual respect and eviscerating any one who lover proggy-jazz avant metal, post-black-gaze and obviously metalcore. See what I did there? Was just joshing. But not really. No for reals I try to be nice because as the t-shirt says 'Mean People Suck' or was it 'No Fat Chicks'? I think I have both.

Hungarian Ghoulash is best with goat meat.

I haven't been able to listen to anything on my own this past week, but I did get to introduce my dad to Gentle Giant's "The Power And The Glory", Return To Forever's "Where Have I Known You Before", and some Tigran Hamasyan. Also, my son has decided he doesn't like Rush. I don't know if this relationship is going to work.

Write him out of the will. No one who dislikes Rush is worthy of inheritance.
