Mayhem - 'Esoteric Warfare'. My third and final favourite band in the great triumvirate is the mighty Mayhem, and Teloch's first songwriting expedition yielded no fruit. While it flatters Blasphemer's songwriting style in its basic structure, there is just nothing engaging or enjoyable about listening to this album. Obscure and weird lyrics, empty riff sterility and an ungraspable overall thematic concept.

More than Ordo Ad Chao?  Both were pretty forgettable, to be honest.

It allows me to be a kind and polite person in a way, cheesy as that sounds...

I guess it depends on the level of negativity that one is talking about too, though.  I imagine that something like Blasphemy or Mayhem might work out some bad thoughts in a positive way, but I have some doubts on occasion when I listen to stuff that is genuinely anti-social/negative/extreme.  Sometimes it feels more like a meditation in darkness, filth, etc. than a purging of it.

Bouncing around in "3D" in some distressed font over a computer-generated background can make pretty much anything look bad. I didn't watch the Incantation vid but I've seen so goddamn many variations on that idea, and it detracts from the song every single time.

Come to think of it, I have never seen one that actually was good.  There was one for Demons & Wizards that was fun for being able to read what the song is about in more detail, but nevertheless looked dorky overall.

Animated lyric videos are the fucking worst. I hate them so much. That "everybody look at me/follow the bouncing ball" shit ruins the song and the lyrics for me. I always put up a different tab or minimize the window.

Especially if the lyrics turn out to be bad!

Are they on a label? Maybe give the label an email if they are.

From the looks of it, they are not (neither was the side project of one of the members).  It looks like they released everything independently.

I don't know if I have any favorite bands nowadays but one worth mentioning is Burzum and especially Hvis lyset tar oss and Filosofem albums, also all the Burzum ambients!

Nice!  Have you listened to the most recent album?

There’s usually some old school zones knocking about on the smaller distros and labels sites.  I think they are great nostalgia pieces if nothing else.  I recently got a Celtic Frost 5 page booklet with an order from such a site that was interesting enough.  I tried to run a zine style publication at college back in the 90’s with little return on investment for the department so have a soft spot for them as a concept but I think they are dead now.

Can't speak as much for metal, but zines seem to be really popular among noise and power electronics fans, with some high profile publications still in production.

Many of the shops that I order from have a wide variety of zines (metal included), though.

Do people even want Zines for metal? Like perhaps when I was just starting out, but after a while just going though youtube, metal archives and bandcamp links me to the point, thier music that i can check out.

I think they have mostly been phased out of existence, apart from some underground ones for die-hard fans.  Sometimes they provide some great interviews with bands that cannot be found anywhere else.
