  1. I actually agree with you, in the sense that considering "Altars" was released quite some time before Massacra's sophomore, Massacra were definitely a backward looking band. Whereas Morbid Angel showed an amazing progression even between A and B. Besides, none in Massacra was on par with Trey. What I meant to say is that is that if "Enjoy the Violence" sounds like death/thrash to your ears (and mine), without "Altars" it would have sounded like thrash/thrash
  2. Oh yeah, that is very true... Their attitude was... well, disputable to say the least (pun intended). But then again, some 20/30 years later I only care about the music. If I were around back there, I am sure I would have antagonized the whole glam thing and stuck with proper metal. These days I marvel at stuff like Dokken's "Tooth and Nail" just as much as I marvel at, say, Exodus' "Metal Command"!
  3. Thank you! I am also very fond of "To the Gory End". I prefer their sophomore because I love Murphy's proficiency! As for Massacra, I agree with you and I consider it to be an "Altars" wannaabe... which is fine for me, because they pull it off pretty well!
  4. I absolutely love those three records you mentioned... BUT... 1) Darkness Descends: incredible aggression! Brutal thrash, with some insane drumbeats by Gene Hoglan... yet it is let down by the production. What Rick Rubin understood then better than everyone else was... that if you're playing tremolo picked riffs and you have 200+ snare hits per minute, you HAVE TO GET RID OF REVERB! That's the main reason why a record like "Darnkess Descends" which was released mere months after "Reign In Blood" sounds so low-fi compared to "Reign in Blood". Also, Don Doty was no Tom Araya. He did sound wicked, he did not sound menacing (not that Tom actually is, but he sounded such). 2) Power from Hell: that's the perfect blend of GBH and Venom... it's almost thrash, but it's kinda like crust punk too! I l absolutely love that album, especially the title track, but I consider it extremely primitive. 3) Spectrum of Death: a flawless record that ranks up there with Darnkess Descends and Pleasure To Kill, but unfortunately it came out too late... And also with inferior production values... No doubt it should have deserved more, but this band was no pioneer in the genre. They were extremely fine at what they were doing, but didn't invent much... whereas each and every one of the big four brought something peculiar to the table, IMHO. As for the eternal argument "why are Anthrax there instead of Exodus/Testament/Overkill"? That's an easy one: they put out their first record before any of them (though Exodus and Overkill had been around longer) and sold considerably more records!
  5. Ahah thank you! I understand that extreme metal and glam don't share much... But there definitely is some quality and aggressive music to be found in the glam classics. I mean, back in 1983 Paul Baloff would have beaten the s**t out of any glam kid with a Ratt or a Quiet Riot shirt, but if you listen to stuff like "Red Hot" by Motley Crue or even "Sweet Cheater" from Ratt's first ep... man, those songs are fast and heavy... and competent too! There is a common ground, at least to my ears. ...you see, I love to listen to Angel Dust, Iron Angel, Assassin all the german bands (epsecially those from the infamous Ruhr area), but at the very same time I get great vibes from the worst of the sunset strip bands...
  6. Cool song! I am Italian and so is my girlfriend, but she spent 6 months living in Turku while doing her Erasmus in the second half of 2015, so I have been there myself multiple times. We both loved Finland, but we were not lucky with the bands in Turku! We could only find indie bands, something we both dislike... I wish I had met you guys! She wouldn't have appreciated (she's more into Shiraz Lane and Santa Cruz), but I'm sure I would have loved to be at one of your shows! You have some stiff competition up there... Lost Society are doing great. When I was in Helsinki I also had a chance to see Rebellix play live: those guys are great! Amazing singer and very gifted guitar player (who actually happens to be italian). Keep up the good work!
  7. None of the above. "In the Sign of Evil" would be my choice. Demons break out ov... hell.
  8. My fave are the classic bands, the initiators. Death (the first four) and Morbid Angel (the first two) above all. When it comes to "lesser" bands, I am fan of Cancer's "Death Shall Rise" with mr Murphy on lead guitar and Massacra's "Enjoy the Violence". I cannot consider myself an expert of death metal, but these are records which I proudly spent my money on.
  9. Any heavy metal band from the 60's, 70's and 80''s. Yes, I do believe each of these decades had its own heavy metal bands. Yes, I do fancy calling heavy metal stuff like Cream, Mountain, High Tide, Bloodrock and the like. Possibly my all time favourite are Kiss, Motorhead, Deep Purple, Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. But, really, I love all the classic bands. Iron Maiden, Manowar, Saxon. And I also love thrash too! From the mainstream stuff to the 80's cult bands such as Deathwish or Rigor Mortis or all those awesome Roadracer bands like Realm or Atrophy or Toxik. And I must confess that I have a huge collection of glam metal as well...
  10. I kid you not. Rush invented the black metal riff. Fenriz says that Euronymus did. Untrue. Rush did and barely anyone noticed. Rush are from Canada. Canada is still grim. And frostbitten too. Check this out (I am deadly serious). The riff from 8.33... black metal. KVLT.
  11. I absolutely see your point. To answer your question, I tell you which records of which band I own and which I prefere: Anthrax: I have every record except two ("Stomp 442" and "Volume something the threat is something else"). My fave is "Among the Living". About "For All Kings": I think it has some great SONGS in it. Not some great riffs (same chromatic stuff we've heard a milion times), not some great solos (this Shadow Fall dude does not impress me at all and I've seen them play with this guy last summer in Rome... Belladonna pokes fun at him all the time and believe me, not in a respectful way! You can tell he doesn't belong to Anthrax). Having said that, the damn songs and melodies, to me, are great! I love "Monster" above the rest. Slayer: I have every single record they ever put out, but my favourite are the first 5 (like you said). I deeply dislike "Diabolus" and "God Hates Us All", though I still won't sell my copies. "Repentless" to my ears obviously misses Jeff's contribution (save for "Piano Wire") and most of all Dave Lombardo's style! I love Paul Bostaph, but I'd rather have him play again in Forbidden, than in Slayer... I also love Gary and I look forward to hearing him compose some songs for Slayer on their next record. Kerry King is someone I have a lot of respect for, and I overall enjoyed "Repentless", but I still feel it's the weakest of the latest Big4 records, simply because the aggresion is there, but not so much the songs (at least to my ears). Megadeth: I have their records from the first to "Countdown" and then not a single one up until "Dystopia". To be honest I don't like "Countdown"... I consider it to be watered down. So much so that I never bothered to listen to "Youthanasia" and the rest of their 90's records. But "Peace Sells" and "Rust" are among my favourite records ever. When I first heard "Fatal Illusion" my thought was: "Goddamn, this is like "Peace Sells... on Amazon"! It's like proper thrash doesn't stray from its roots, but still manages to feel contemporary! Here and now, in 2016!". And that Kiko dude just shreds like hell! I am so glad he joined Dave. Saw them play last june in Bologna: amazing show! Metallica: from "No Life til Leather" (yes, I bought the record store day reissued tape... no, I wasn't around in 1982) up until the "Black Album" and then not a single one up until "Hardwired". I dislike the black album too, to be honest... I have it because there are some songs I sort of enjoy, but conceptually I hate it. And I am not too fond of "And Justice", save for a few tracks... but man their first three records were phenomenal! Genius! I was not impressed by "Death Magnetic", so I did not buy it, but this "Hardwired" thing, to me, has some amazing songs: the title track, "Moth" (though one riff is very much akin to Testament's "Alone in the Dark"), "Atlas Rise" and most of all "Spit out the bone!"
  12. Hello everyone, Sorry I skipped this section and went straight away to the new bands thing because I was too eager to promote a song I put on youtube. Please excuse me for doing that! I am a very dedicated metalhead who just recently started a thrash project called - you guessed it - Skull Kollektor. I pretty much like anything metal, from its origins in the late sixties, to 90's death metal, black metal and even power metal! But I mostly love thrash and traditional heavy metal (glam too)! Thanks for having me here Moderator note: Link removed to band promotion (people will find your music when and if they are ready to, please keep all promotion out of the introductions thread)
  13. Hello... I love all four of them, but if I had to make a chart of their latest records, here is what it would look like: 1) Megadeth - "Dystopia" 2) Anthrax - "For All Kings" 3) Metallica - "Hardwired... to Selfdestruct" 4) Slayer - "Repentless" If I had to pick a single song, though, it would be Metallica's "Spit Out the Bone"! That was downright AWESOME. Testament's last record was extremely solid too, but I think it's not as organic as those from the big 4.
  14. Hi everyone, As a thrash metal project from Milan, Skull Kollektor is looking for advice by fellow fans of the genre. This is the very first song we have come up with since forming late in novembre 2016. The lyrics tell the tale of someone who brings the dead back to life, then abuses them, then kills them again in an eternal (and infernal) loop. It's like three Slayer tunes put together: "Post-mortem", "Necrophiliac" and "Kill Again"! Big influences (lyrically) were certainly Alice Cooper, Mercyful Fate and Italy's very own Death SS. We are very dedicated fans of traditional thrash metal and would truly appreciate some feedback on this song. Negative feedback is very welcome too, because if we are doing terribly wrong, we might just stop right away!
