  1. I know I’m going to regret this but… dude I think you need help. I understand that life can, at times, be a real drag. It can be monotonous and boring, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing more to life than that. It’s not healthy or accurate, to insist that becoming an adult requires the death of all excitement and joy.

as far as not finding modern metal to be at all exciting? I’m not as dedicated to tracking new releases as GG, Surj, and co but even I can think of three bands off the top of my head that dropped killer stuff last year. Even if you’re not interested in tracking down modern metal, there’s troves of bands from the 80s and 90s, just waiting to be discovered in the cavernous depths of the Internet. Anyway, that’s really all I’ve got to say so I’ll close with this: in life and metal you only get out of it what you put in.

So all the Shiraz comes from South Australia? Is that where the Barossa Valley is? I've never looked to see. Oh yes, now I see, the wineries are all right up the road a piece just to the north of Adelaide. My father in law is a Shiraz hound, drinks a bottle and a half every night. He turned me onto it when he came over to visit, so after I got home from work we'd sit in the kitchen in the evenings and polish off two bottles together because he didn't want to drink alone. I even went out to the big box store and bought two quality wide rimmed red wine glasses for us to have our Shiraz out of. It is now the only variety of wine which I can say that I genuinely like. Fortunately we get it over here too, so I could have some whenever I wanted. But I don't really need to be drinking a $12 - $15 bottle of wine every night, so I rarely partake. It's cool that I can order it in a restaurant and sound like I know what I'm talking about though. Most non wine drinkers probably stick with ordering rose or merlot or white zin or maybe pinot noir or something.

Wish I could get more excited about Primordial. I did like that one album The Nameless Dead some years back (holy shit is that really 16 years ago already?!?) but none of their other records every really grabbed me the same way as that one. Ironic that this year vocalist Alan Averill's side project band Verminous Serpent is my #1 aoty.

    Yep.

And that's the story. Melbourne hates Sydney. Sydney doesn't care.

GOLGOTHAN REMAINS - Adorned in Ruin.

I am so over shiraz. It's the over wooded chardonnay of the 21st century.

There’s also McLaren Vale They aren’t as well-known outside of South Australia as the Barossa Valley wine growing region. they aren’t as well-known outside of South Australia as the Barossa Valley wine growing region, but still offer some excellent stuff. Oh and it isn’t just Shiraz that we produce here, though for me rosé is the most overrated of all wines, closely followed by Merlot.

Re Primordial I find them very hit or miss,

  3. Nah mate aside from our grudge against Victoria for stealing the Grand Prix us had a ladies are pretty content with our lot, besides, we are the capital of wine production in this country… I don’t know what he’s on about with Sydney feeling like America either the orca is going senile, I reckon.

That one, and Light of a Dead Star from the year before are two of the greatest black metal albums ever made. Definitely some the best French black metal you'll ever hear.

Sounds like he's suggesting Victorians are full of shit.

    Bollocks.

So are you suggesting Victorians are....? (in addition to being full of shit obviously) Because I was under the impression that those Queensland banana bender blokes were the ones every Australian collectively feels they have the right to look down on. So what is it about Victorians? Or would you have the same smug superior elitist attitude towards Aussies from all states outside of the ACT?

Funny I just remembered my M-i-L dropped me a Chrissie postcard to inform me that she had moved (shifted I believe your mob likes to say) from Castle Hill up to the Gold Coast, I assume to be by her sister. So now I can call her a banana bender if I ever have occasion to talk to her again. What I want to know is why would Kiwis leave Aotearoa to live in Australia in the first place? It's so much nicer in NZ.

Requiem Tenebrae from the following year isn’t bad either, but can’t compete with those first two. On balance I’d say the debut is my favourite.

I was talking about rye whiskey actually, which was very popular over here in the 19th century, and is now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. But bourbon can be good too, just a tad sweet and you'll more often find it's been mass produced and minimally aged. Wild Turkey is swill, virtually undrinkable, only good for mixing. At least the regular WT, haven't tried their "rare breed" version. Craftsmen make rye, and I enjoy the spicy bite. I suppose one's attitude toward whiskey really depends on whether you like single malts or not, and I don't. I know aged Scotch whisky is generally considered the best whisky you can get, but I'll take a nice bottle of rye over any Scotch or single malt I've ever tried any day of the week. Personal preference, we all like what we like. It's like arguing black metal vs death metal, we all have our own opinions and preferences. There's no right or wrong preference.

Dig that Blood Libels album though Blivvington. \ m /

I agree on the bog standard, wild turkey, the 101 proof isn’t bad, but not something I’d go out of my way to try, rare breed is supposed to be a real step up for them, but having never tasted it before the jury is still out on that for me. Even as a fan of Scotch, I will admit, most of the really well known distilleries are nothing special . Re Blood Libels it’s good stuff for sure.

We didn't butcher it, we evolved it, made it our own and made it better. Just like we evolved their whiskey and made that better. I actually find the English language endlessly fascinating, especially how the various different regional dialects and local patois developed among the different pockets of settlers from different parts of Europe. I've read some explanations of how the early American settlers helped to evolve our language. We had a lot of English and Irish and Scot settlers on the eastern seaboard and in the Appalachian mountains where the American English language took on a life of its own based on all these different influences, as well as the French and Germans who were in the mix as well, and of course the native Indians. Whereas you lot never told the British to get stuffed, so you just kept their language essentially the same as it was when you got it, y'all just added the silly nasally accent for some strange reason.

Morning Ari! Whataya got on tap for today, some thrash perhaps? I always know when I see Ari's first couple of posts that it's probably time to go to bed. When I see Jon's first post I know I've stayed up a bit too late.

Bourbon is fine at all, my brother was even kind enough to gift me a bottle of wild turkey rare breed for Christmas, but I don’t know that I could say you a lot improved whiskey, then again, perfection is impossible to improve…

  8. Yep you’ve got Belong and short of it GG and who knows some of the old crew might drop around again, one day, hell, even I took a two year hiatus at one point.

Yeah, it is hard keep a good crew going. We had our fun back at M-F and saw loads of people come and go. Who knows why, exactly? I was all over the boards at one time and then lost some enthusiasm....other interests...life. I think I thought the big releases were higher quality. There were developments I found exciting and then some of the sub genres played out for me and got stale.

The desire to connect with random strangers who then become online friends and the unwavering focus you have...you're a unique personality suited for the long haul. I really come to get recos and keep my foot in the community but my extra curriculars take precedent. I don't have the relentless interest in the constant hunt for music.

I used to spend a lot of time putting together my gear and that was an interest. M-F at the beginning was the right group of nerds who came together over sound and interest in heavy music. At one time, I had a group of guys with more cross over in taste that were fun to shoot the shit with. And, then some of the more eccentric jerk offs got irritating.

It's not easy finding like minded music fans you connect with that aren't dicks. I've had a good time here. The winter is a good time for me to hole up with new music and get through the dark months. I find myself this time of year with a stack of downloads and CDs and it's fun when I have more new music than I can realistically absorb while still listening to new stuff. I'm trying to listen to my new albums in my "listening room" in stereo something I don't do for long stretches of time. A lot of it sounds amazing.  I'll try to follow some new releases for a while and then get bored with the grind of new releases in the Spring and probably fade for a while. Or, who knows, maybe I'll keep more in '24.

The community is always evolving here, so much has changed in the decade I’ve been around. Still I like to think I’ve made a handful of friends around here over the years.

I thought he just got told to tone it down and that he was taking a voluntary rest, as someone said he'd done previously when he was told the same thing.

Afraid not, we had asked him to tone down his rhetoric, probably a dozen times, since the message clearly wasn’t getting through to him our collective hands were tied on the matter.
