  1. I find the my favourite solos tend to be from the classic metal era: AC/DC-Whole Lotta Rosie, from IYWB AC/DC-Dog Eat Dog Thin Lizzy-Cowboy Song, from Live and Dangerous Virtually any solo from Rory Gallagher's Stagestruck live album. Ozzy-Shot In The Dark Blue Oyster Cult-Astronomy from Some Enchanted Evening. I'll go and check my collection and report back with some more up-to-date ones...

  2. Re: Best Blue Oyster Cult Album?

The first three are essential: s/t' date=' Tyranny and Mutation and Secret Treaties.[/quote'] Agree-but there's many hidden gems... Cultosaurus Erectus is sublime. Fire of Unknown Origin may seem a bit soft and over produced, but the songs are brilliant, especially 'Vengeance(The Pact). And the best? Imaginos. Combines the dark, mysterious feel of the first three with a modern sound. Don't forget the poorer albums have got utter, utter gems on them also-club Ninja has a few, the best IMO being Perfect Water. Mirrors has 4 or 5 pieces of genius like The Vigil, I am The Storm, Mirrors and The Great Sun Jester. The Revolution By night album has got Take Me Away, Shooting Shark and Shadow of California. Is BOC the most underrated metal band of all time? I think so.
  3. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

Been away sorting my life out- but that was a damn fine rant gus666. Mighty fine. It's fired the mad monkey into a homicidal rage' date=' he's slashing and burning anyone reading kerrang. The monkey is too much in a chaotic rage - I'm even scared of him. At this rate Kerrang won't have a readership and they'll have to become a proper metal magazine - I'm sure they used to be many years ago. Long live the monkey...there is so much blood, that poor squirrel has got its work cut out cleaning up.[/quote'] My missus watches that Kerang! channel and that Scuzz channel-they're worse than the fuckin mag! I remember when Kerrang! was born-an off shoot from Sounds newspaper, devoted to metal/hard rock, and had Angus on the front. The first edition had the poll of greatest metal album or song (can't remember which) but it was either Rainbow Rising or Whole Lotta Rosie that won it. Now? it would be Paramore, Avril Lavigne or some other whiny shite. Black days for mainstream metal indeed.... Metal101-Do you breed monkeys and squirrels, and do you do mail order? If you do, can you get them started and send me 5 packets of each when ready? I think I'm gonna need them....
  4. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In? Metal101! I kneel before you (fnarr-fnarr, yuk-yuk, oo-err missus)! Do you think there's room in The Room for all those fannies who buy Kerrang! magazine? Glasgow Central station is polutted with the cunts on a Saturday afternoon. They 'hang around' trying to look cool and holding hand-written signs which read 'Free Hugs'. They all hug each other as if they're greeting their natural mother for the first time. And the haircuts!?!?! an affront to anyone in the 'hard rock' community. Ponces that look like girls; girls that look like ponces; stupid big fringes and trousers that hang just on their skinny fuckin hips. And of course eyeliner. Fuckin masses of it. Trying to look like the 'dissafected youth'. And everything's 'like, cool' And they all listen to the fuckin worst music in the world. Yes, worse than reggae. Bands full of whiny fuckin Yanks from affluent backgrounds, all wearing those oh-so-geeky glasses. With the fake growling and the whiny fuckin choruses. Oh, and surrounded by beautiful teenage babes, naturally. I could procure a train (big fucker-9 carriages). Hold a huge sign up saying 'Free Hugs Express-stopping at all stations to Huggsville' and when the cunts got on it, lock the doors and pull the blinds on the windows down. Then we let the Monkey and his little friend the squirrel on and close the doors.... All aboard!!!!:twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted:

  5. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

Gus666 you might be as sick as me. I'm favouring the homicidal hamster, though due to a traumatic incident as a child, I may hit it with a brick if it steps out of line a tries to bite me - [flashback] "mummy the hamster is eating me, agghhhh, help,[scream]", "help him, there is so much blood", "[screams]" Anyone who looks like a hamster is going into the hog justice room - fuck 'em all
You've no idea what those words mean to me-coming from the master himself, its such an honour...
  6. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

The monkey has glued razor blades to his fingers - they might need a plaster after he's finished - cheeky little monkey. I'm thinking a getting the monkey a demented pet to help him in his work punishing the dark forces which stand against all that is metal, any suggestions? Preferably smaller than a monkey as I'm a bit tight on money after the purchase of Marty the Mad Murderous Monkey.
What about a homicidal hamster, a temperamental terepin or a ferret? Hamsters could take bites out of the victims and store the body tissue in their cheeks, regurgitating it later to freak them out even further. Terepins can give a very nasty nip. Ideal for soft body parts like scrotums and knob-heads. And ferrets are vicious wee swines that stink of piss.
  7. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

The monkey has space in his diary to do them all - his diary is really interesting to read' date=' he also puts in reflections on how he feels about his work. [b']How would you want one direction and blink 182 dealt with? The monkey has recently purchased a chain saw and a piece of wood with nails in it. He could therefore either slice and dice or tenderise. His current favourite is a brick - the things that monkey can do with a brick is amazing - I'm really proud how he's developing. He's really took to the Justice Room, given he was just a homicidal thug previously, he's becoming quite organised and creative in his work. All Hail the Murderous Mad Monkey
Bend them over, naked obviously. Them get the monkey to stick his hand up their arse, rummage about, grab a hold of something, and pull it out. If the monkey has long, dirty fingernails, then all the better.
  8. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

what about one erection and stink 182?
Dave, if I'm being honest, I'd rather Blink 182 were in that room getting shagged useless by the monkey than Simon Cowell. SC is our enemy: we know it, he knows it. Blink 182 claim to be 'one of us' i.e. a serious rock band. They're not. They're pricks. I think Blink are far more dangerous than Simon Cowell. Give the Monkey some Viagra and let him do his worst. And Simon Cowell can sit in the corner watching with his cock in his hand....
  9. Re: Metal Forum Top 10 Heavy/Traditional Metal Bands

That's the commonly accepted phrase so that's the one I use for bands like this, though I do consider proto-metal bands to not just influential, but actual metal bands, much like I consider Venom to be black metal. Yes, Uriah Heep would also into this category. I've been meaning to look into them more, as King Diamond mentions this band as one of his biggest influences vocally and musically.
Thanks for clearing that up, gents! Easy Livin' by Uriah Heep is a fantastic place to start, by the way (Incidentally, the only time I saw them was at Ayr Pavilion in 1981 and they were supported by Samson, with Bruce Dickinson on vocals). I think Hendrix is a definite. For that guitar sound and the 'axe hero' style of playing and live show if nothing else; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7SZKoxgJwQ
  10. Re: DEVIN TOWNSEND

I know that a few of his solo albums are are non-metal (mostly in the progressive/ambient category)' date=' so I'm not surprised that one of his newer albums isn't metal. Many progressive musicians tend to attract fanboys, like Opeth, Dream Theater, King Crimson, etc..., so I'm not surprised by how much hype he receives. If you're looking for a better starting point, Ziltoid the Omniscient is his heaviest album, and is the one that most resembles Strapping Young Lad, maybe give that one a shot.[/quote'] I maybe will. But it'll be the last shot!
  11. Re: DEVIN TOWNSEND

I haven't heard any of his recent stuff' date=' but everything I've heard of his up through Ziltoid the Omniscient is excellent.[/quote'] I've maybe just been unlucky, Blut. I'm open minded enough to not expect another incarnation of SYL, but the God-like adulation he's recieving built my hopes up too much maybe. Ghost couldn't even be described as metal by any stretch of the imagination. If someone like Slipknot or Trivium had made that album they'd have been drowned in a barrell of their own urine.
  12. Liked Strapping Young Lad, but haven't heard much of his solo stuff, but got 2 CDs when I subscribed to Terrorizer magazine; Deconstruction and Ghost. Now, Terrorizer (amongst others) have been banging the 'Townsend is a genius' drum for a while now, but I have to say that, whilst not expecting SYL Mk.II I was very disapointed in both. Ghost especially is the biggest bag of shite in the history of big bags of shite. Have I just been dealt a crap hand, or should I check out the other Devin CDs?

  13. Re: Metal Forum Top 10 Heavy/Traditional Metal Bands BlutAus, again very interesting point. I do feel that finding the first ever metal band is a bit like finding God-you think you've found something real, but it'll soon turn out to be false. Sabbath definitely had a unique sound for the time, and it is difficult to find another band at that time who fit the pure 'metal' tag that you talk of. But the whole 'what is heavy metal' debate is one which doesn't have a straight answer. Sabbath themselves (Ozzy particularly) always said they were a rock n roll band, as did Priest and, well, basically all bands at that time. Not many have openly embraced the term over the years (though some individuals, notably Halford, have recently). Another very important band who influenced most of the 'heavy' scene were, of course, MC5. Another indicator that the whole 'heavy' or 'metal' genre has been a vastly complicated evolution, rather than the revolution that some would have you believe. Keep your thoughts coming-I'm really enjoying this discussion. ;)

  14. Re: Hog Justice Room - Who Would You Lock In?

Man the hog justice room really brings out the best in people... it's heartwarming
metal101-you're madder than a packet of hamsters! If you're mad monkey needs to take a banana break, here's something you could try as a substitute torture (I have David Coverdale in mind for this one): Stick the cold end of a red-hot poker up his arse. Then watch, point and laugh as he burns his hands on the hot end trying to pull it out. Prick.
  15. Re: Lemmy Watched the Lemmy movie at the weekend (don't know why it took me so long to buy it) and it was a bit dissapointing! Not the great man, obviously, but there was too much Metallica, Dave Grohl, Scott Ian etc. So much more to explore of the great man, but I felt there was too many interviews with other people.

  16. Re: Metal Forum Top 10 Heavy/Traditional Metal Bands

Lizzy were a class act. I always thought it was a toss of a coin between Phil and Hendrix as to who had the ultimate 'rock star' image. The two of them were just so cool!!! Only criticism of Lizzy was the stale setlist they would constantly tour with. Lynott said after they'd split that he played all those songs because he thought that the fans wanted to hear them, but most fans prefferred the songs that rarely made the setlist. Check out stuff like Soldier of Fortune, Opium Trail, Fools Gold, Ballad of a Hard Man, Wild One, Toughest Street In Town, It's Getting Dangerous, The Sun Goes Down, Holy War, This Is The One. I did get fed up hearing Still In love With You, Baby Drives Me Crazy, Suiced et all.
  17. Re: Metal Forum Top 10 Heavy/Traditional Metal Bands

Thin Lizzy definitely is' date=' I haven't heard enough UFO to know for sure, but they do have connections to Scorpions who are heavy metal, so I'm assuming that they are at least in some places. Twisted Sister has been a glam rock band for most of their career, but they do have at least two songs that could count as heavy metal (Under the Blade and Burn In Hell), so as much as I would like to, I can't write them off completely.[/quote'] Interesting thoughts, BlutAus, but TS being a glam band has more to do with their image surely? They were influenced by Slade for one, but most of all Alice Cooper, in music and the whole costume thing. I personally come from the age where metal meant the same thing as hard rock-in fact the term was probably pinched from the Steppenwolf classic Born To Be Wild, and Steppenwolf wouldn't ever be classed as metal, but were credited for being at the start of the whole 'heavy' music thing. And I think that's where the debate comes from. The music was 'heavy' but maybe not 'metal'. Personally speaking, AC/DC UFO and those other 'classic rock' bands will always be metal to my mind, but what you and I are classing as metal are two different things. It was a really interesting time, the '70s- the whole 'heavy' scene was very diverse. My mates would all like (and you'd see guys at gigs with patches on their jackets) bands from Genesis (proggy version), Yes, the Stones & Who, AC/DC, BOC, Lizzy Status Quo, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Alice Cooper, Rush, Van Halen, Sabbs, Priest, The Eagles (never understood that one myself!!), Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bands or artists like Elton John, Dire Straits, Roxy Music, The Doors were almost without exception NOT in the 'scene' and generally ridiculed the same as the pop groups in the charts. Even though some of these artists could be described as rock bands, they didn't have that 'heavy' or complex/prog thing going on. Of course most of those bands aren't metal in the truest sense, but they'll always be 'heavy' to me in the very loosest terms.
  18. Re: Lemmy

Interviewer - "Who would win in a fight between you and God?" Lemmy: - "Well, God would win, I saw him when I was on acid once and he was quite tall!"
Lem also said of God "...and he wears a blue suit". Lemmy is God. Here's another couple: Interviewer: Why did you decide to become a rock star? Lemmy: Because I realised from a very young age, that if you could play guitar, girls would take their clothes off for you. Interviewer: do you think kids will still be playing rock n roll in 50 years time? Lemmy: Yes, coz the guitar is the best instrument to pose and look cool playing. You can't pose playing a tuba, can you?
