  1. Re: CRAP ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE Aye-we've strayed off-topic, Murph! Mind you, you've maybe adjusted it slightly (I think the original's run its course TBH)- How about: 'Crap Bands That I Like' ? Here's mine- Motley Crue - 3 good albums, but more image/lifestyle than substance. Trivium - I think their image counted against them Boston - Detest that American soft rock, but their first album has some of the best guitar work ever. System of a Down - Easy-to-do-left wing-politics but some brilliant songs Entombed - Some utter stinkers in the back catalogue, and they're not really very good, but when they're on fire they're sensational. Biohazard - Poor song writing ability, but can produce memorable songs and were brilliant live. (I know Boston ain't metal, but back in the day they fell under the whole 'heavy rock/metal' umbrella-but that's another debate!!)

  2. Re: CRAP ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE

I borrowed Divine Intervention from some girl in high school and didn't make it through the whole CD. It was just boring. I'd say their studio work alone earned them the following they have. Their live work on the other hand should've earned them mockery. Diablos in Musica is an amazing album. It's so angry and hate filled it's practically stand alone in their catalog to me. Yes they've always had those two attributes but on that album those emotions were visceral. They went to 'C' tuning from standard' date= that's what a lot of Death Metal bands tune too and as such I've never understood the "nu-metal" insult being hurled at them. They were still slayer, just heavier. Everything after that has been them going through the motions. In my eyes they're just a high priced cover band. AC/DC is the most overrated rock band in existence. I can't stand them. There are so many more quality Metal acts from Australia I hate how they are considered the best.
I agree with that-it seems that any shift in style back then, no matter how slight, was greeted with this silly Nu-Metal tag. Sometimes metal fans can be too narrow minded, which is ironic when you consider the diversity of styles within metal. Another album by an overrated band that I really like is Theatre Of Pain by Motley Crue. It got slated by critics and fans alike, but I think the songs are consistently good and Tommy Lee's drumming the best he ever did. They were another lot who never really justified the 'legend' status they get today, even though I like them. What about Sepultura's Against? Gets sneered at by most, but again I think it's a good album, the title track being as good as anything written with Max IMO.
  3. Re: Albums you always come back to. I preferred Samson to Maiden! The first time I heard Bruce singing with Maiden (it was Run To the Hills) I thought it could have been a Samson song! NWOBHM did produce some very good bands which deserved to be bigger-I honestly think Saxon's first 4 albums were as good as anything Maiden did. But there was a lot of bands who remained obscure cause they weren't that good. It was a similar outcome with the 2nd wave of punk bands- 1 or 2 great albums, a change of direction to get commercial success-then down the pan. Shame.

  4. Re: CRAP ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE

don't have that one mainly due to all the negative comments I've heard about it' date=' still it can't be as bad as Seasons or Christ Illusion right?[/quote'] Have to confess, here (you'll string me up!), but I don't think Slayer deserve the fanatical following they get. I like them, but I just don't think their back catalogue really justifies it. Another album that seems to get panned by the fans (in the USA especially) is AC/DC's Stiff Upper Lip. But I think it has that heavy blues groove that their recent (last 25 years!) albums lack.
  5. Re: Albums you always come back to. No doubt at all that TS blew it-but I think they were a different 'glam' to the others. They were almost left-overs from the original '70s glam. But christ were they good live. And still are! Here's another very underrated album I always come back to- Deep Purple - Purpendicular Possibly their most underrated album?

  6. Re: CRAP ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE Yeah, BlutAusNerd, I meant albums generally hammered by fans or critics or as a huge shift from the bands recognised sound. For instance, Diablos by Slayer seems to be generally considered as their venture into Nu Metal and generally gets a kicking from all, but I really like it. I suppose another example could be Nostradamus by Priest; if it was a 'normal' Priest album as opposed to a 'project' it could be considered bizzare, but again, I love it for what it is. I'm certainly not one of these blind followers who loves everything by their favourite bands-I just seem to find myself liking a lot of turkeys! Mmmmm. Turkeys.......

  7. Re: Riffs versus Solos

Both are essential. It's like asking which is better food or water. You need both.
Tend to agree-with the old, classic bands you very often got both (AC/DC in their prime being the best example IMO), but how disappointing is it when you get a dull solo in the middle of a killer riff? Ruins the whole song sometimes. Likewise, a great solo can't rescue a poor riff. Many of AC/DC's post BIB songs have got some great riffs but got dull solos (Big Gun). But metal has changed in style so much that solos (in the traditional style) aren't as important as they maybe were.
  8. Re: CRAP ALBUMS THAT YOU LIKE

Iced Earth - The Dark Saga Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death Metallica - Death Magnetic Megadeth - Youthanasia
Is Youthanasia regarded as poor? Not a big fan of 'Deth but I've got that album and I like it a lot.
  9. Re: Albums you wish you could unhear.

I don't know there's something about those Cult albums that just don't connect with me' date=' as for your unlistenables I AGREE 100%[/quote'] I actually get in a rage when I see the Darkness on the TV. And I genuinely believe that The Black Album is overrated. Some tracks okay, others rubbish.
  10. I know I could never be a journalist and review albums-too many times I like something that gets panned by everyone else. So what are the albums you like that are generally regarded as rubbish by the fanbase of that band and critics alike? Mine: Slayer - Diabolus In Musica AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video Rammstien - Rosenrot Thin Lizzy - Renegade Rose Tattoo - Southern Stars

  11. Re: Albums you always come back to. The Damned - Grave Disorder Judas Priest - Painkiller Deep Purple - Machine Head Blue Oyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening AC/DC - Powerage Thin Lizzy - Black Rose Saxon - Strong Arm of The law Samson - head On Deadline - Back For More Accept - Balls to the Wall Twisted Sister - You Can't Stop Rock N Roll Gillan - Mr Universe Motorhead - Overkill UFO - Strangers In The Night System of a Down - Mesmerize Turasis - The Varangian Way Sepultura - Roots Oxymoron - The Pack Is Back Ensiferum - From Afar Entombed - To Ride, Shoot....etc Hard Skin - Hard Nuts and Hard Cunts

  12. Re: Albums you wish you could unhear.

hate to say it but on those two BOC albums NTNR is right on the money in my opinion they are some of the weakest albums the Cult made (at least the ones I own anyway) hopefully I'm not coming across as pretentious or arrogant because I'm trying not to be also I'm not really a fan of industrial or Rammstein I think all their albums are dull
Not in the slightest, Murph. You obviously know your Cult! I'm just curious as to why they were chosen as poor. I can see where you're coming from. They are very polished. I suppose I should nominate a couple of unlistenables: Metallica-The Black Album Anything by Guns and Roses Anything by any of the line ups of Whitesnake Anything by the Darkness
  13. Re: Albums you wish you could unhear.

Way hay' date=' found somebody who like Rosenrot. lol[/quote'] Honest, satan (that must be an oxymoron!) I really like it! i think it was a left-overs from Reise Reise, but I thought it was really good. The last one, Liebe ist für alle, was really, really dull IMO.
  14. Re: Kerrang! vs. Metal Hammer I read Metalhammer last month, and since Merlin took over as editor it seems to actually feature real metal. Kerrrang has ceased to be creditable since 1994. Even then it had a fairly liberal sprinkling of utter keech. An embarrassment.

  15. Re: Albums you wish you could unhear.

Here are some more! Anthrax - Spreading The Disease Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune Blue Oyster Cult - Specters Blue Oyster Cult - Curse Of The Hidden Mirror Death - Scream Bloody Gore Deicide - Legion Faith No More - King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime GWAR - Carnival of Chaos GWAR - We Kill Everything Pantera - Cowboys from Hell Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill Rammstein - Rosenrot Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe
I actually like Rosenrot-I prefer it to the last album they brought out. As for Spectres and Agents? Maybe a bit over produced and polished, but, honestly, genuinely brilliant song writing. And some of the most underrated riffs ever-Golden Age of Leather, ETI, Godzilla, RU Ready 2 Rock, Tattoo Vampire, This Ain't the Summer of Love... 8-) Is this thread meant as 'I'm fed up with these albums' or is it about albums you think are rubbish? There's a bit of both in the replies. :?:
  16. Re: HULLO! Was on another 'magazine' Forum, and everyone seemed to be like 'Comic Book guy' fae the Simpsons. Smarts arse, know-it-all and one eejit even corrected people's grammar and spelling! Seems on here folk are a bit less smarmy. Now-I better go over to that 'Albums you wish you could unhear' thread and get stuck into the OR for his BOC bashing!

  17. Thought I'd try your Forum for a bit-I like what I see so far. Certainly doesn't seem as smarmy and elitist as other forums.... I'm an old f@rt-grew up listening to Lizzy, AC/DC, Purple, Quo (don't laugh-they were a serious heavy rock band back then), BOC, Rory Gallagher etc. Always have and always will love metal/hard rock and punk. Look forward to some good discussions and, the main reason I joined, to find some more great bands. Faves at the moment- Moonsorrow, Amon Amarth, Crowbar, Ensiferum, Opeth, Sick on the Bus. Cheers!!
