Sorry bro, but she's hot! Also, she owes me $50, so I can't just stop hanging out with her if I don't get it...Oi, keep away from my sister!

Even with songs like "Judy is a Punk" and "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", nobody considered them punk rock? Seems unlikely. I'm not the most knowledgeable about punk, but I know that Ramones wasn't the only band stateside that was making punk rock waves."Punk rock" died in 1978 as far as I'm concerned. It was a movement which was about a lot more than just the music. Culturally speaking it was the end of Clement Atlee's "Ingsoc" era, harbinger of the Thacher years, and very very very native to the UK (where that sort of thing was quite common, the catalogue of youth subcultures like skins, teds, mods and whatnot, were followed by punks). That being said, it leaves the problem of what to call that sort of thing, i.e. hard, fast, aggressive rock, often with a heavy political leaning. For instance, at the time, everybody knew about the Ramones (and many were inspired by them) but nobody considered them to be "punk rock" proper. The name punk has stuck though ... and I guess that's allright, even though it's kind of misguided. Much of what's considered punk is just good old party music ... such as ... WTF are you supposed to call bands like The Carburetors?
This is where the punk label meets the wall.
But who am I to be such a fucking snob? Once upon a time in Norway, the genre thing was mocked by the band Turbonegro, who labelled themselves "deathpunk" and definitely delivered the goods ... but they shunned the punk label for precisely the reasons mentioned:
Then there was the hardcore boys. There can be little doubt that the 90s scene grew out of the 80s scene ... but the overall music scene in Norway is so small that everybody knows everybody else, at least at the rock end of the spectrum ... which is why the groundwork laid down by bands such as So Much Hate was really important to understand the context from which Norwegian rock (in general) entered the world stage.

Stranger things have happened. We might like your music too, if we knew anything about it...Shipping is definitely not free to Australia, but I remember it was really cheap back in the day. Probably still is. I feel really nostalgic for redstream at the moment, hence me looking it up again after so long. I'll have to check out your music at some stage - I might even order it, who knows!

That, plus our ever increasing Mexican population seems to be the key. Mexican food is flavorful, easy enough to make, and pretty inexpensive, so I don't see why it wouldn't assimilate into our diets with the cultural proximity. I have a slight preference toward South American food, but Mexican food is awesome, one of the few styles of food I could eat every day.My guess in regards to American obsession with Mexican cuisine stems from an otherwise typically bland diet. Mexican food is spicy and involves a lot of exciting flavors which are a far cry from the "meat and potatoes" archetype that is often associated with American culture.
Interestingly enough we are also featuring a taco bar at our wedding; although, our meats are going to be beef chicken and pork.

I've long heard the name Mysticum, but I still have yet to hear them. Windir is great (if a tiny bit overrated due to the grim and "metal" fashion in which Valfar died), but they're more of a Viking metal band than a black metal band, so I don't tend to think of them in a black metal context.Man, this is a looooong thread ... that took some time to get through. But it's also a very interesting one. I'm going to throw in a band that Euronymous was fervently championing for a while ... before his life came to such an untimely end. They weren't heard of for the longest time, but are out with a (relatively) new one now, called Planet Satan. Their sound will NOT appeal to everyone ... but if you like the thin and noisy guitar mix thing, this might just work for you. Oh,and yeah, they use a drum machine ... which I suppose makes them somewhat "industrial". Ladies and gentlemen, this is Mysticum (possibly my personal favourite among BM bands, from any time or "subgenre"):
Another great band that should be mentioned among the old guard from the 90s is Windir, although they may not be much known outside of the Norwegian scene. More melodic and "viking" than Satanic, really ... but it ought to appeal to those who like Ulver. Or at least, so I think. This is Journey To The End:

Paradise Lost - Paradise Lost
I remember buying this shortly after it was released because I was told (by a source I would later find to be quite unreliable) that it was their return to metal. I haven't listened to it since then, and I don't think I'll be hearing it again in the future, as it's on its way to the recycle bin. There were maybe 2 songs here that sounded the slightest bit like Paradise Lost, the rest was really awful alternative radio hard rock that nobody in the metal community would listen to if it was released by a different band. This is for fans of Three Days Grace,Trapt, and A Perfect Circle, not fans of Draconian Times and Icon.

It's weird to hear Peter Dolving in this context, but it doesn't sound like thrash. It's kind of got a punk/alternative/grunge thing going on, almost like Faith No More without Mike Patton's wackiness. I can't say that I enjoyed it.These guys are kind of all over the place ... but they are Swedish ... so what I'm thinking is that if the Swedes get to have their own DM genre, then why not a separate Swedish Thrash/Speed genre? What we can say, at the very least, is that they used to kick some serious ass when playing live.

...can anyone make sense of this?Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax went on tour together. They decided to go on tour together. They were the big four thrash metal band on that tour. I guess if Testament or Sacred Reich or Exodus or Overkill went on tour with them it would be the big five or six or seven.
Therenwas a Hell on Wheels Tour in the 1980s with Helloween, Armored Saint, and GrimReaper. The Big Four Festival with Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, and Metallica began 2010. It was the name of the tour/festival. Nonetheless, I consider the three to be my favorite Thrash metal bands from the Americas.

I would say personality as well. Music fulfills it's purpose when people pour themselves into it and use it as a vehicle for self-expression, which is something that's hard to do when you're showing off. As FA said, becoming a better player should be about filling your toolbox so that you're writing and expression can become more diverse, but when you set out to make something to push your limits, it's hard to fit some soul in there. Technicality and soul can and will continue to coexist, but only with artists who don't lose sight of being expressive as they teat through something difficult to play.

Not really. In the Woods... was fairly progressive, but I don't ever remember them getting into weird avant-garde territory. The Third and the Mortal might have gone that way after they moved away from metal, but I wouldn't know because I haven't heard those recordings. Are The Third and the Mortal and In the Woods... considered Avantgarde Metal?

It hasn't quite been 15 years since I first found them, but yes, the website is exactly the same as it used to be. They're good at what they do, and the dude that runs the label seems pretty cool. You could even purchase my album there if you were so inclined. The shipping is free, at least within the US. Not sure about international...I used to order from Redstream all the time about 15+ years ago. It's a great website, I love it.
I went back there a few weeks ago and was pleased to notice that the interface is exactly the same. I searched for a few things I was interested in and was disappointed to find a lot of stuff was out of stock. I actually bought my Mayhem hoodie from Redstream in about 2003. Good times. There's a tonne of great, obscure, black metal albums for supercheap. I haven't ordered from them in over ten years, so I hope postage to Australia is still low.

That could have easily been a Hannibal Lector "I'm having a friend for dinner" type of comment. I'm only about 700 miles from Phoenix, but I hate the heat, so I tend to avoid the desert. I have family in Las Vegas though, so I end up in the desert heat more than I would like...Come visit, friend. We will grill up meats of all kinds.
You know upon posting that i realized it could be taken out of context. Lol

It's been a while since I've had good barbecue. When it's done right, it's hard to beat. We have a couple of good places here in town, but ever since my wife had her gallbladder removed, she's had a hard time eating really fatty meats. I usually only get to enjoy it when I'm on my own or out with a friend. No i am an arizonan. But texas style barbecue is amazing. Also chinese food is delicious enjoy.

Where does she live in California? I do logistics planning, and my main region is from Utah to California. Hope she enjoys her trip back home.So it's not all bad then.
My California sister is due to hit my place in about 20 minutes for a short visit before staying for four nights later in the week. Hail to all the United States vampires on metalforum.com, in my sister's infernal honour exclusively.

It's a pretty great resource. I use it a lot myself, sometimes even to order from labels that you could buy from direct. Red Stream Records, for example, is a great label/distro that has been around for years, but their online interface is clunky and cumbersome to use. Whenever I order from them, I always do so through the eBay interface because it's so much easier than their site.ebay is pretty much the only online place I bother looking. It's just so much cheaper than other places I've looked at, and most albums I want are there, new, often with multiple sellers and I just pick the cheapest. A lot of places I buy from on ebay have free postage too. For old school classics it's impossible to beat really because you can pick em up for under ten bucks including postage.

Absolutely. It's okay for people to disagree, but getting butthurt over it will get you flamed.I think the point of any kind of internet discussion forum is to exchange ideas and that means that sometimes there is going to be contradiction and disagreement. Anyone who cant handle that probably doesnt belong here.

Yeah, it was with Jeff Hanneman on their Seasons in the Abyss 20th anniversary tour. Dave Lombardo was the only one that had his shit together, the rest of their performances were lazy and awful. They started to get it together a bit towards the end of the album tracks, and sounded okay on some older songs, but lost it again when they launched into Reign in Blood. They were really that bad?

My wife uses cola when she makes a pot roast too, I think it achieves the same thing. They usually turn out really well, so even though I don't drink soda, I can't argue with results.Yeah. It comes out really tender. Probably the acid in the soda and the sugar blends really well with the barbecue sauce. We always slow cook these though, ive never tried it as a regular marinade for grilling.
Also green curry is awesome. Love me some thai food.

I saw them live once and they sucked. I had no desire to see them again after that, I prefer to remember them how they were and not how they are now.I have never seen them live either. I almost bought tickets to see them on their final tour, but the high price stopped me from following through. In time, I will likely regret it.

I would venture that most of us are familiar with the history, but you've presented it pretty well here. It was a good read, and is something that new fans need to familiarize themselves with.

Some days, nothing can go right. Fuck that shit.I'm having the day from hell. It started with me burning my tongue on the morning coffee. Then the nearly full mug fell over when I put it down and smashed on the floor. After that I caught my phone charger in the vacuum and mangled that. The gears on my bike (for the indoor trainer) have jammed, guitar teacher was away so I travelled nearly an hour for nothing, was hassled by a religious nut on the train, and now my amp won't work. Today can just fuck off.

Who Are “The Big 4” of Thrash?

The post was pretty convoluted and confusing in general though, especially ending a discussion of "The Big Four" by indicating that they were his/her three favorite thrash bands of the era...
