Whereishumhum's Achievements

  1. Hello gang, I'd like to introduce you my band, Fomalhaut/北落, a progressive metal band from China, I would describe our music as in the veins of Dream Theater, Opeth, Symphony X, with sprinkles of Porcupine Tree, Seventh Wonder, and Spherical Universe Experience The band originally started in Beijing in 2006, released demo tracks and played a handful of shows in local venues like 13 club and MAO Livehouse (if you are familiar with Chinese underground scene you might have heard of these venues, sadly, both had closed down a few years ago). After the band members had finished their undergrad and moved on to different paths, the band entered hiatus. Guitarist Qiaochu "MadPig" Tang went on to pursue his PhD at Chinese Academy of Science while carrying on his music endeavors with new projects, drummer Can "Volcano" Tang moved to Canada and then Seattle for his IT career, vocalist Shan "Schaan" Hua moved to Germany for his architecture design career, essentially scattering the band on three continents. Until early 2020 when the blasted pandemic hit us. I have been "internet friend" (we have never actually met in person) with MadPig for many years and had worked on his projects before, and we flirted with the idea of starting a project of our own. In May 2020 MadPig sent me demos he had been working on and trying to put out to continue Fomalhaut, and invited me to mix these demos. As I get involved I started putting more work and thoughts into arrangements, writing and other details of these demos, which eventually resulted in the band inviting me to produce a potential full length album down the road. Fast forward to present day, after countless internet communication/chicanery, we have managed to put out two songs, with 6 more on the way - meaning if everything goes well, the full length could be out some time next year. Anyway I'll stop blathering about band history, here are the songs 1. Kar, or "snow" in Turkish, inspired by Orhan Pamuk's novel, tells the story of a wanderer trying to align their identity with their new reality in a different culture, an experience the band members share, and I'm sure our audiences will resonate with Spotify: Youtube: Bandcamp: https://fomalhaut.bandcamp.com/track/kar-single 2. Sister/姐姐,or Egchee (Mongolian), a song originally about a band member's romantic interest, eventually evolved into thoughts about the way the same things take place over and over again, manifesting in different places, at different times Spotify: Youtube: Bandcamp: https://fomalhaut.bandcamp.com/track/sister-single Here are some earlier demos of the band as well: https://fomalhaut.bandcamp.com/album/demos-2006-2012-remastered We will update this thread as we release more work! Thank you for stopping by and taking a spin at these tracks Till next time!
  2. Mostly old school death metal bands like Death, Suffocation, Deicide, Asphyx, I enjoy tech death/melo death too. Prog metal bands like Symphony X, Opeth, Leprous, Haken, Gojira, as well as sludge metal bands like Neurosis, Mastodon etc are regular listens for me too. Outside of metal I listen to jazz quite a bit, older post bop/hard bop as well as ECM jazz and fusion jazz too.
  3. Turning 29 next March, decided to take a new path in life, specifically as a producer/mixing engineer. At my age, I know right? Anyway, I spent a long time studying something completely unrelated to music and earned a masters, then a PhD, currently working as a researcher but wanted to change the course of my sail before I get too old. If anyone wants their songs mixed and mastered, feel free to hit me up. If you just want to talk about music in general...oh hell yes that's why I'm here in the first place Hobbies include skateboarding, sketching and oil painting, trying to pick up traditional Chinese calligraphy as of late, and trying to come up with fresh cuisine ideas too (they mostly don't turn out too well though) Name's Xiyu by the way, happy to be here!
