  1. Did someone say new Akercocke? I wasn't tracking that but definitely has my full attention now. I wasn't the biggest fan of Renaissance when it came out, but it has definitely been a grower and now sits between 2-3 in their discog for me. Nothing will ever touch Words in my book, but I'll be stoked for anything new from the 'cocke.

Today: All Them Withches discog on rotation. Going to see them tonight and not totally familiar.

They're all on the same side, just some are better at fooling us than others. Anyone smart enough and competent enough to do a good job is smart enough to know it's a losing proposition to try these days.

But that's across the US.  The US minimum wage has been frozen at $7.25 since July 2009

I would agree that this is outright criminal, but really just a talking point that doesn't present the total picture of fuckery at work. Wages in general have been stagnant and combined with obscene inflation in the housing market, auto industries, healthcare, and plenty of others have made the average American experience much less than that of previous generations. I make about 2-3x what either of my parents ever did combined, live modestly, and have about 20 more years to prepare for retirement on top of my existing annuity and guaranteed healthcare coverage yet I still have no expectations that I'll be able to retire before my health eventually declines taking me out of the workforce. Corporate profits, the lack of regulation and taxes, and the total devotion to the church of Wall Street will be the undoing of the American economy in the long run and will lead to eventual change although it will likely be nonviolent and a couple generations later than what is needed.

    Absolutely...

...and agreed. I was trying to do as much PIP as I could with the speakers because I didn't want to cut into the stock harnesses in case I ever sell the truck, but damn they didn't make that easy. For some reason the 2015 seems to get overlooked for tweeter harnesses, with TacoTunes being the only place I could find that actually makes ones that fit. Still ended up having to cut the aftermarket woofer harnesses I was using to make everything work, but those are a hell of a lot easier to replace.

Well at least for the speakers you can save the connectors and wire them back in later with a bit of effort. Still less than ideal. Had no idea the 15 would be tough for such a common upgrade item. I would have thought that the last year of the gen 2 platform would have been well covered. I have the Kicker upgrade speakers in my 16. Came with the truck I bought a year old, so I'm not sure what is in there behind the panels, but considering the condition of the truck I have to imagine it was well done.

Wish I'd known about those before hand. I picked up a Kenwood Excelon DDX396 along with a Crux SWRTY-61N Wiring Interface back in late spring. Assuming it works as it's supposed to, it shouldn't be too bad to set it up as it's pre-programmed. Just flick the appropriate switches into on or off. It does mean a day with the crimping tool and heat gun though.

You'll have to report back on how it works out. I've never had good luck with Sony units, but the ease of PIP is tempting. I've installed my fair share of car audio systems over the years, so I'm not afraid of the wiring. Less hassle is less hassle though.

Yeah...new head unit is next. Need to double check that I've got everything I need for it, and I'll hopefully start wiring the harness together next weekend.

..for speakers, I ended up putting in some Reference Series 6530cx components from infinity

    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-NcJ3XZY6s7l/p_108R6530CM/Infinity-Reference-REF-6530cx.html

Nothing super fancy, but they'll be able to take a good chunk of power once I finally get around to getting an amp for them. I only ran them a little bit today, just to confirm they were all working, but even with just the stock head unit I can hear a difference.

You should look at these plug and play units if you haven't bought one yet. I'm not crazy about Sony, prefer Kenwood or Pioneer, but it's better than having to wire a harness and program the adapter.

What speakers did you put in? I'm thinking about an upgrade in my 16. New HU and some other goodies. Freshen it up cheaper than a new truck that will set me back 60k minimum.

Weigh in anytime dude, you don't have to wait for me to ask you. I was one of those who wasn't down with the all instrumental album. You're correct that the material was still very good, excellent even (as always) and I would rate Conscious Creation at about an 8/10. But without the vocals there just didn't seem to be any point in actually listening to it. I think I played it once or possibly twice, and then never put it on ever again for the next 6 years. Because when I'm in the mood for some Chasm I'm always going to choose one or more of the albums with vocals. Which people might think is strange, because lyrics are all but irrelevant to me, especially in death metal. Don't know what they're growling about and I really don't care. I'm not the type who would ever be curious to read black or death metal lyrics. I don't even really pay any attention to song titles either as I tend to ingest these extreme metal albums as wholes.

But those vocals need to be there, they're an integral and indespensible part of the sound, for me anyway. Even if I'm not focused on them because I'm intent on the guitars, I still need them to be there. I've seen them live a couple of times and they destroyed the room each time. Didn't notice Mr Corchado struggling to sing and play at the same time, but if that was really the reason for leaving vocals off that album I would've told him to bring in a guest vocalist for live performances, the same way he's brought in live only bass players. Personally, I've always assumed the reason that album was instrumental was that he just didn't feel like writing all those lyrics for the 65 minute album he had written the music for.

NP: Obsidian Hooves - Illuminating Void, SOCAL 2022

Iirc, he had said he just didn't want to sing anymore. Glad he changed his mind.

The Chasm isn't my top DM band of all time, maybe 3 or 4. That honor goes to Immolation. But, if I have a choice to see anyone in the top 5 on any given night, it's The Chasm 10 out of 10 times. If you've never seen them live, your life is not complete. Saw them back to back in 18-19 (Mass Destruction and MDF) and they just slayed anyone else on either bill. Their set at Rams Head on Saturday night (MDF 19) was the stuff of legends.

I love Xoth. The Vektor comparisons they often get are really only half true (although, to be fair, I like Vektor). Xoth has always been a super fun band to listen to, and their tonality is centered around a core of heavy metal, just without the clean vocals. You can bet I'll be listening to this when it drops.

So with a little time today it's a good morning to go panning for gold in the archives.

Well damn. This is a good one. Heavy metal out of Chicago. Talk to your doctor if you have any allergies to baritone clean vocals, progy elements, twin guitar harmonized leads, or catchy tunes. I may be adding this album to my collection. Rare quality and thoughtfulness went into these songs of a variety you really don't hear much anymore. Where a lot of heavy metal bands get to the point of being able to keep in sound with Manilla Road or Omen, these guys have more than enough inventiveness and freedom to make there own sound. I heartily recommend it.

Up next. That description is calling my name.

    THERE ARE SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL TENETS

    I
One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
    II
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
    III
One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
    IV
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
    V
Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
    VI
People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
    VII
Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

Better morale guidance than any organized religion at the moment.

Do you still have a rotary phone mounted on the wall and a 25" console TV too?

Can I Still Use An Old Rotary Phone

    (1966)

1966 Zenith Color TV Vintage Ad "why not get the best"

I actually do in the garage. 1962 Sylvania console tv combo record player. Belonged to my grandmother. Made from solid oak. Weighs a ton and is absolutely bomb proof. Will easily survive the apocalypse. Planning to restore it one day when I find the time. Well restomod anyway.

Still have a rotary phone at one of our houses too, although we disconnected service 2 years ago. Way easier to use for my wife's elderly parents who could never get the hang of cell phones. Great backups when a hurricane comes and knocked down all the cell towers too. I miss the landline days sometimes. Shit was simpler then and the expectation to be available 24/7 365 didn't exist.

It's a sad state of affairs when I can almost guarantee some linguistic anthropology student has written a full paper on the revival of the 'V' as a 'U' in black metal. I truly do not envy any teacher their job these days.

Then again, maybe my priorities are misplaced since that's my main concern while, just below, you've caused me to remember a time in which a band calling themselves the Butthole Surfers enjoyed mainstream appeal. I don't know which is more indicative of cultural decay, but either way something's not right. You ever have one of those nightmares where you're not in direct physical danger, but can't shake the foreboding feeling that some fundamental aspect of reality has gone wrong?

I really want to like this, but the sampling and industrial influence really gets in the way. If they could produce this kind of atmosphere with just their raw instruments so that it could feasibly be played in a live setting, I'd call this excellent. As it is, it's good, but with a huge asterisk.

I'll put the Butthole Surfers output above any band using said V in their name/album name all day long.

Alright guys, we get it: The 'V' can be utilized as a 'U' as well. I can't imagine you're saving that much from not buying one extra letter stamp for your printing presses. Who knew black metal bands were so frugal?

But then it wouldn't let all the CVLT kids know that it's the good shit. It's a filtering tool.
