I have looked around, and there isn't a Discord server about Metal that isn't a private friends server. Discord is a great software, having almost perfected all the existing technologies for live chatting platforms, making it the one stop powerhouse for all your real time communication needs. Same as forums, They're both about bringing likeminded people closer, forming communities and friendships. But you can get a community only so close with a forum, since all you can do with it is to make posts and slowly discuss it through making comments. The usage of Discord became common for a lot of platforms around the internet, because it's real time, and stacked with lots of other tech.
