  1. This is not terrible Doc. Considering it's grabbed the "post" tag I had to go in ready for the fact that it'd be fairly tame and civilized (and refined as you like to say) but it's not completely un-barbaric and sterile. I dug the quiet parts, only the clean vox made me wince, but at least they kept that shit to a minimum.

Think I might even give the whole album a go from the beginning now, hope I don't regret this. I must say track 2 is not starting off too well. But it'll be OK, it's only just past 7:30 I've got plenty of time to listen to goat metal later after dinner to get the post taste out of my mouth if needed.

  2. I am familair with Siouxie Sue, my buddy had some of her records back in the day. I know I've checked out Joy Division at least a dozen different times because they have a legion of fans and their name comes up a lot but it just goes right out of my head, I honestly can't remember what they sound like. Same with the Cure, I know I've heard a few of their songs on the radio way back when but I can't remember them now. I just remember the dude's haircut. I think my little sister was both a Cure and a Bauhaus fan at one time in the 80's but I had already moved out by then so I don't think I've ever bothered to hear them either. If you think I'm closed minded and intolerant now you should have seen me in the 80's. I was that metal or punk or GTFO guy back then with just a very few special exceptions.

Only band in that vein I was ever really super into from that whole era was Sisters of Mercy. I still listen to their 3 records and consider myself a fan. But they're a little bit harder than the rest of these, probably why I like them so much.

Alright here we go, Gnosis track was very interesting, I liked it but it's not something I'd buy. The Wraith was giving me heavy Lords of the New Church vibes, just not as catchy or edgy. And there will only ever be one Stiv. Poison Ruin was pleasant enough but not something I'd seek out again. Secret Shame was my favorite of the bunch, that song was great. Was that actually from the late 80's? Because if not they nailed the sound and the vibe 100%. I will explore them further. I guess I must be sexist or a homophobe or something because I have to admit I am more willing to accept this kind of new wave/post punk sound from a chick than I am from a dude with an androgenous, effeminate voice. Infidel demo was my second favorite, lots of guitars there, I'd listen to that again.

But anyway the verdict is: I'm gonna go listen to First and Last and Always now, haha.

  3. I still haven't figured out what Darkwave is. I know a lot of the post punk band names but I have no idea what Echo and the Bunny men or Bauhaus sound like tbh. I'm currently in the laundromat parking lot happily grooving on Dopethrone with 12 minutes left til I have to throw my shit into the dryers but maybe I'll check out some of those youtubes later when I get home.

  4. Most sound guys at small clubs don't know what the fuck they're doing. I've heard many more bad sound gigs at small club shows than I have good or even passable sound. Sometimes they'll get it somewhat figured out midway through or towards the end which pisses me off because why couldn't they have done a dry run soundcheck and figured it out earlier?

Well in our defense we've never had a separate section of the forum set aside just for dedicated sub-genre threads. That's completely foreign to us. 99% of our posts were made in one of two sections: Let's Talk Metal and/or Everything Else. We got used to throwing caution to the wind and mixing things up by talking about different sub-genres in the same thread and even within the same post. By contrast this place has seemingly dozens of section headers with dozens of topics each. It's hard to navigate because it's not intuitive. I'm beginning to learn my way around now but I still can't seem to wrap my head around the idea that they keep their What Are You Listening to Now thread filed under Forum Games (?) and their new 2021 release thread filed under Upcoming. We're also not used to having pedantic topic police moving our shit around and forcing us to conform to rules 'n shit. I think our sole beleaguered mod Jay might have flexed his mod powers and moved or locked maybe two threads in the entire 5 years I was there. We were given the leeway to be lawless, unruly and wanton going off topic and threadcrapping at will. Of course it goes without saying that as the newly arrived guests it behooves us to try and get on board with how they do things around here. We must be contrite and seek atonement for our sins.

  6. I have two non-metal albums from the last decade that I go back to again and again when I am not in the mood for filth, annihilation and brutality:

All Them Witches - Dying Surfer Meets His Maker

    Dorthia Cottrell - S/T

And of course, there is the one that has consistently captivated me since the week it came out 45 years ago when I was just a young lad of 15:

Their last three albums have all been great! Needless to say I'm looking forward to this.

Hell yeah, that put a smile on my face. I think everyone who knows me knows how I feel about the last 3 Darkthrone albums.

Don't like to dwell on upcomings too much since once I've heard a track I get impatient and annoyed about having to wait for the official release date to get it when I know it's already in the can. How very entitled of me, yes I know. I like finding shit just after it's been released so if I'm digging it I can get it right away. So most of what I will post on this thread will be new shit from the current year that's already dropped.

That said I'm currently listening to a preorder!

  8. I must be on a different wavength than everyone else in the world or have a different definition of "flawless" or I could somehow be misinterpreting the question. Because unlike most people you talk to I don't find it all that unusual to love every single song/moment on an album and rate it 9.5 out of 10 or above. I could easily list 50 albums I feel that way about just off the top of my head, probably a lot more than that. I won't, but I could. I mean I've been a heavy music fanatic since an older kid up the block turned me onto Led Zeppelin II around 1972, so nearly 50 years. That only averages out to one flawless album per year and I know there have been more than that for me. I could probably post 2 of them every week for a year and still have more. I feel like if you're having trouble finding albums you love and that you think are flawless then just maybe you're expecting too much from an album.

First two that popped into my head:

    Nefarious Dismal Orations

    Shades of God

I'm probably looking in the wrong places, but I can't see the unadulterated praise here for the new ALTARAGE that it richly deserves.

Are people here not worthy too?

I've gotta say this new one the boys from Bilbao just dropped has been the first one I've had a positive initial response to since their massive and unfuckwithable debut. All the follow-ups have left me cold until now. This new one seems like a keeper.

Well, none of the above.  Music in general for me works on a deep psycho-physical level and provokes emotion rather than evoking memories of places/times, except when I am analysing it which activates a different part of my brain.  Metal does all of this, more intensely and directly than most other music.  But I don't always want to be emotionally engaged, so then I will listen to abstract composed music or ambient music.

And this, for those unused to Thatguy, is the kind of wankery I typically indulge in.

Having trouble imagining you being emotionally engaged T-Doc. You seem far too rational and low key and stoic for that. Navy as well, he's pretty calm and low key. Hungarino though that's another story, I could totally see him getting exceedingly emotional on the regualr.

I would agree though that music provokes a strong emotional response, that's mostly why we listen to it. I was just saying that certain bands or albums from decades past have the ability to stir up a strong nostalgic response as well. But as you know, 90% of what I listen to is from the current calendar year or from the last few years and for this music there is no nostalgia attachged so no transporting back to the 70's or 80's, new music is pure visceral emotion.

  11. Just bought tickets last week at a good friend's request to see two bands in November in Brooklyn that I reeeeally don't want to see. Now all I can secretly hope for is that they cancel the show for pandemic reasons before then. I'll go if they have the show, but I'd hate for my first live show after all this time to be that rubbish.

Still have my 2020 MDF tickets as well as credit for my hotel room that I had to cancel. They cancelled last year's festival obviously, then they went ahead and cancelled this year's as well. They're obviously in no position to refund everyone's money as I'm sure they had already advanced quite a bit of it to bands and stuff so now we're all stuck waiting to see which year they will be able to actually hold this thing again and which bands will and won't be on the bill. Sometimes I wonder if I'll even live long enough to redeem these tickets.

@Navy, a bunch of my off-board friends are going to Psycho LV in August as well and they were asking me just a week or two ago if I was planning to join them. But I looked over the lineup and there just wasn't enough there that interested me to justify flying cross country. Whether European bands will be playing or not, I'm not an Emperor fan, and due to my Boomerness I was fortunate enough to have seen the full classic Fate lineup back in the mid 80's with Motorhead and Exciter. I'd see them again if they came closer to me but not with all that other garbage on the bill. And Vegas in August is fucking brutal. They seemed to think that the opportunity to get together with them should be enough of a draw in and of itself to entice me to go and I guess they do kinda have a point, but sorting out the babysitting situation alone was enough to shut that idea down. Maybe next year.

Who's playing Mass Destruction this year? Or haven't they announced the lineup yet?

1914 - Where fear and weapons meet October 22, presumably on Napalm Records.

"Blind leading the blind" was my favorite album of 2018 so I'm really looking forward to the follow up. For those unaware, 1914 is an Ukrainian black metal band (no Nazi) that mainly sing about WW1. They're not the rawest, nor the most commercial, but straddles that nice middle ground of being memorable while still being fucking intense.

    T

Haven't heard Blind, but the 1914 album I have, Eschatology of War from 2015 is death/doom. Are you saying they changed style from death/doom to black metal?
