Tyshawn Sorey - For Wadada Leo Smith (Adagio)   ...new classical, low-tuned and slow. Only for Thatguy, and maybe markm or Macabre if they're feeling patient. I loved it. Pulitzer winner this year. Unprofessional recording here:

Lovely and very nicely paced. Thanks.

By way of contrast, this is what I listened to this morning.

    BONGRIPPER - Empty

And just before I came here for a visit, and before I resume work on a series of pieces I'm writing for 3 marimbas, vibraphone and double bass

BING SATELLITES - Extensions Of Reality

But I'll listen to the whole Sorey's piece before I start.

  2. DISTANT SHAPES - Distant Shapes. Just when I think I'm getting into it it goes soft and drops in some cheesy synth  or wholesome singing. Still, good in parts

CONFIÈRE - L'impôt du Sang. This also goes soft and sounds like crap to boot.

VALBORG - Barbarian. By way of contrast, VALBORG never disappoint.

NP - GLASSING - From the Other Side of the Mirror. Just starting on this before I head on out with Mrs Thatguy - it will be SBS Chill while we drive - and it seems like a good antidote to the softness of the first two.

I'm just throwing a little shade your way Thatguy. In truth I definitely have a mental list of movies that I know to only watch by myself. At some point we all learn to maintain our defenses in or around company.

All good. And I'm only half joking.

NAXEN - Descending Into A Deeper Darkness. This does not manipulate Thatguy into feeling anything but pumped up and ready to run.

depictions of diminishing childhood innocence perched just above the looming darkness of adulthood.

This kind of theme is aimed at manipulating Thatguy's emotions, and that kind of malarkey is not Thatguy approved. So I've made a point of avoiding all such movies, and suchlike books too, Orca.

These are Thatguy approved and I listened to them this morning:-

MÆRE - ...And The Universe Keeps Silent. I think I called this spare the other day. Perhaps austere is a better word.

WALK THROUGH FIRE - Till Aska. You'd have to call this austere too, but it is entirely different to the above.

NP - SLOWDIVE - Pygmalion. These guys had their day back in the 1990s apparently but I only just discovered them via a couple of new releases. This one is from 1995. Shoegazey quiet music reminiscent of Cocteau Twins but without Elizabeth Fraser's glorious voice. Very noice indeed.

  5. INTER ARMA - New Heaven. Noisy, varied, interesting. Fits the bill for new metal for me in 2024.

Not to be confused with NIKOLAI KORNDORF's symphony - A New Heaven. And yes I am being a dick by referencing a piece of music I am familiar with while none of you will be just because I can.

FLUISTERAARS - Manifestaties van de Ontworteling. This is not metal, It is rather abstract electronic music. Most of you will hate it.

  6. BIG|BRAVE - A Chaos Of Flowers. There are some beautiful passages here. They are further from metal than ever but that's OK.

ENGULFED - Unearthly Litanies of Despair. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Noice, but.

MÆRE - ...And The Universe Keeps Silent. Spare, thoughtful music.

That's crazy. I honestly thought they only said silly shit like that in the movies. Did you pick that up when you lived in the UK, or is it common for Aussies to use that particular exclamation?

I probably did pick it up in the UK and I probably started saying it ironically or to mock them. I've been saying it for so long that I forget. Here, it's probably just me and the son - who used to put on a Sarf London accent when he was a teenager just for fun. There is no end to the mystery of Thatguy.

NP - BLOODMIST - Trace. Despite the name, this is not metal at all.

    Do they sell fruity beer?

    Regrettably they do.

I'll do ya one better, they sell actual fruit right there at the Fyshwick markets.

Yep. And Mrs Thatguy and I bought our fruit and veg at that very shop this morning.

...but no, I didn't realize you were specifically talking about sours.

    There's yer problem.

Sour beer is the only beer I hate.

So wine. Man T-Guy, you sure hate a lot of stuff. Little kids and puppy dogs are probably on the list too right next to rainbows and sunny days.

    Well played.

There's a lot of music I hate too.

I assume none of y'all enjoy stouts, porters, pale ales, dark ales, IPAs, DIPAs, ESBs, Kolschs, dubbels, trippels, quads, saisons, wheat beers, barley wines...

For that matter, considering the majority of beers out there have some degree of citrus or dark fruit flavor to them, what the hell kind of beer do you "real beer doesn't have any fruit flavor in it" guys actually drink?

Blimey. First I got accused of hating kittens, now I hate beer. I will post a picture of the next beer I drink which I intend to be tonight while I watch the football.

Yep there are fruity flavours in all beer, as there is in wine, and tea, and even coffee. I am - as you very well know - talking about yer so-called 'sour beer' which is fermented fruit juice. And nasty.
