Thanks guys - no substitute for hearing it myself, but I'm away from a good listening connection. I'll have to wait till Monday to give it a spin. "Furrow" didn't really do much for me, but I'm interested to check it out anyway.

    Fair enough, no worries

Also I checked out Perverse Offerings To The Void by Golgothan Remains, I think I'm satisfied with it so far. Any opinion about that album?

How does it compare to their other stuff? I'm a big fan of Autumn Aurora and The Swan Road but I've had a hard time connecting with the more recent albums I've heard.

It's probably their best work since Microcosmos, I really liked it. The overall tone is particularly upbeat, but you'll probably like it if you already enjoyed Autumn Aurora

  3. Upon reflection, I think 1991 is the year I feel most connected with:

    Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

    Autopsy - Mental Funeral

Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten

    Immolation - Dawn of Possession

Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients

    Darkthrone - Soulside Journey

    Coroner - Mental Vortex

    Death - Human

Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick

    Gorguts - Considered Dead

    Master's Hammer - Ritual

    Sadistik Exekution - The Magus

    Sabbat - Envenom

Protector - A Shedding of Skin

Beherit - The Oath of the Black Blood

    Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence

I have mentioned the last 3 in this thread before, but they're still excellent choices. I know the first 2 by name, but haven't actually listened to them. Thanks for the links.

Yeah, I unintentionally mentioned the same Goreaphobia EP (sorry for that). And about those links, no problem! Unfortunately I couldn't find that Morbius full-lenght album on youtube, there are just a couple of songs.

  5. Death metal is my favorite subgenre, so I usually try to keep myself updated on both old and newer releases as well. Since I have some spare time to write, I can suggest you some albums that I like. I'll try to keep away from this list the most known bands, because at this point I guess most of you are already aware of them.

Morbius - Sojourns Through The Septiac

Not to be confused with the namesake vampire created by Marvel Comics, Morbius is an american death metal band which seems to unfortunately fly under the radar of most listeners. Despite their spacey lyrical themes and aesthetics, Morbius barely use any synths/electronic keyboards to enhance the atmosphere, in fact their approach is quite completely the opposite, and would be easily compared to bands like Arghoslent, Corpus Rottus or Morpheus Descends rather than Nocturnus or Mithras. They indeed play an amalgamation, a sort of progressive touch to death metal, while at the same time retaining much of the sound a USDM band should have. As a a whole I feel like this album is very enjoyable and never fails to keep you entertained, although the only issue could be its inacessibility, due to the scarcity of online material.

Perdition Temple - The Tempter's Victorious

(moderator's note: The video which was included here could not be recovered)

Pretty good blackened death metal band founded by ex-Angelcorpse bassist Gene Palubicki. Although we aren't near to Angelcorpse's levels of quality at all, this is still some nice worship with an handful of great riffs. It' could be possible to compare The Tempter's Victorious to a "Of Lucifer and the Lightning" V.2, mostly because each song follows the same structure, songwriting-wise, and the production job is strangely clean for an old-school inspired blackened death metal band, but these are just minor considerations that, upon reflecting a little bit, probably don't do any harm to the album itself. Give it a spin.

    Uncanny - Splenium for Nyktophobia

Uncanny was a fairly underappreciated Swedish death metal band, that never got a fair amount of recognition despite sharing a similar sounds with more known bands such as Dismember and Edge of Sanity.  Even though guitars aren’t the strongest nor the most menacing you could possibly hear from a Swedeath band, they still pack a strong punch, even behind the melodic leads that frequently change tempos from furious assaults to downright melancholic passages. With time I actually managed to dig this album even more than ATG's early material... this just sounds like a great continuation and improvement of the already enstabilished Gothenburg scene, and it's quite of a rarity to find a death metal band which churns out great riffs and melodies at the same time. I'd recomend this album for any melodeath fan out there.

I liked this album, although "Discontinuities" and "Vast Chains" seemed a little more coherent to me. Definitely couldn't hurt to download a few of them from his bandcamp page and give them some time when you're in the mood.

Definitely going to snag a physical copy of Discontinuities, I like what I'm seeing so far

Some of his newer stuff is a bit too off the deep end for me to find listenable, but visit his bandcamp page and check it out. The only similarity to Bethlehem is in the vocals - pretty bloodcurdling and intense. I read an interview where he said that someone (the mailman?) heard him recording, thought he was torturing somebody, and called the cops, and he had to take the cops through his recording studio before they'd believe him.

Didn't know that, truly sounds crazy... but turns out I dig this song, although it's pretty weird for a black metal band. There is an interesting atmospheric passage that starts more or less at 3:54, it seems to me like an amalgamation between Krallice and DsO. There is also a split between this dude and Spectral Lore, might check it out soon.

  8. Krypts is some nice spacey death metal, I like all their material with a slight preference on their 2009 demo over anything else they released, but the last two albums are still great. I'd reccomend them if you are into Burial Invocation, Corpsessed and the likes

Oldenhelm is a great Dungeon Synth project.  Honestly, I am new to the genre myself also.

Wormlust sounds interesting.  Any recommendations on which release is the best starting point?

I'd say the bands I already mentioned are some of the most known in the dark ambient genre. Burzum's ambient albums are pretty interesting too (Dauði Baldrs and Hliðskjálf) although fans seem to like his black metal material much more. Wormlust at the other hand has just one full-lenght album but I think it's pretty solid, so you should check that out.

That Blood Incantation album is awesome. Those guys were killer live too.

Agreed, it's very enjoyable and weird at the same time. I think it will be cosidered a landmark in the genre, just a matter of time before that happens.

So you like some of the more ambient bm?  Do you listen to any Dungeon Synth?

I'm definetely working on that. I already listen to dark ambient (stuff like Darkspace, Wormlust and late Beherit) but I still need to check out some dungeon synth albums. Any suggestion?

Welcome, death and black metal are a lot of what I listen to as well. What are some bands you dig?

As far as death metal goes: Immolation, Angelcorpse, Hypocrisy, The Chasm and Order From Chaos are some bands I really like. As regards black metal I'm quite fond of Deathspell Omega, Paysage D'Hiver, Beherit and Grand Belial's Key. What are yours?

  14. Hello there, glad to be part of this community! A few things about myself: I like most metal music with a preference on death and black metal, but I consider myself pretty open minded when it comes to other forms of music aswell. Hope I'll make some friends here :) cheers!
