It's really more of a progressive metal album than a black metal album, and it does have a really bizarre sense of pacing. It's eccentric and out there and pretty inaccessible, and it can certainly be overindulgent at times. It's most definitely the first Ihsahn album, since Samoth is merely listed as "additional guitars" in the credits, and was a clear departure from the Emperor sound in most cases. I dig it, but I also dig Ihsahn's solo albums and Peccatum.

It has it's moments, but nothing about it really made an impression on me. When I first heard it, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and decided it was just over my head or something and after subsequent listens I'd get some better grasp of it. But still, nothing about it stuck with me. It's like every song has parts that butcher any momentum that starts to build. Prometheus is basically an Ishahn album.

I knew it probably wasn't, I just posted it because it's an over-the-top cover and seemed like an amusing and fitting reply. In response to the other comments between here and there, I didn't take issue with any of it of course and you explain your perspective on the subject well. Maybe a lot of Marduk and such albums by Dark Funeral and Zyklon do sound like shallow, mindless blasting to some and that's understandable. Since the conversation's moved on already, I'll just say that one man's trash is another man's treasure. And after IX Equilibrium, Prometheus was redundant. Cheers.

Definitely not as developed as Deicide's debut, but there's some really cool stuff in here. I'm not the biggest Deicide fan, but this is a very enjoyable listen.

Awesome. Sacrificial definitely sounds more filled out than the album.

Thanks. Same here for the Thorns and Zyklon albums. Diabolis is a hell of a good album; the drumming in particular is intense.

9. Dark Funeral - Diabolis Interium

Excellent, straight-forward black metal. Used to see lots of people wearing this shirt back in the day.

8. Marduk - La Grande Danse Macabre

Very fierce album from Marduk and also fairly diverse.

7. Pungent Stench - Masters of Moral - Servants of Sin

More rockin' depravity from Stench.

6. Enslaved - Monumension

May be my favorite Enslaved album. Very ecletic.

5. Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape

Avant-garde, experimental, psychedelic... Sigh.

4. Zyklon - World ov Worms

Zyklon's debut. Catchy, aggressive, lots of cool riffs.

Atmospheric, electronic-tinged black metal. Also featuring Attila. Killer.

Mine were Hellbilly Deluxe and Antichrist Superstar (on cassette). I kinda liked them at the time, but I guess it wasn't really what I was looking for. Sometime in '99 I had some birthday money that I took to Disc Jockey and picked up the Black Album, Peace Sells... and Bigger Than the Devil by S.O.D. I'd only heard of Metallica and Megadeth by then but not S.O.D. I bought that one just because it looked cool and I thought the song titles were great; "Kill the Assholes," "Free Dirty Needles". I remember coming home with them and listening to them all several times in a row like it was the greatest thing. I ended up getting rid of Hellbilly Deluxe and and I lost Antichrist Superstar somewhere, The Black Album got stolen from me. Don't miss them really, but I still have the other two. I remember my Mom was kind of bummed out when I showed her what I bought, but I think it was just because I spent all of my money on CDs. She listened to Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Edgar Winter, etc. growing up and my grandparents gave her shit over it, so she didn't really care what I listened to. Still, she did say something like "I don't see why you'd want to spend all your money on all that depressing, noisy music. You better not start blasting that shit to where I can hear it." lol It's like she knew what was coming. It wasn't long after that when I got into Slayer, Motorhead and Pantera, then Cannibal Corpse and so on and then I was mail-ordering in metal stuff and hitting up used record stores all the time.

Earache put out a bunch of Best of compilations last year. Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, Carcass... probably of any band that's not on their label anymore that they've got their hands in the pockets of.

Morbid Angel are great. I first saw them live on the Extreme Steel tour with Pantera and Slayer. Jared Anderson was on vocals for that tour. Saw them again in 2013 when they played Covenant in its entirety with David Vincent and it was also cool to hear David on some of the Steve Tucker songs like "Ageless, Still I Am." They worked well as a three piece, and I like Steve Tucker, but the Vincent/Azagthoth/Brunelle/Sandoval line up is hard to beat. Beyond that, I have all their albums, also on vinyl, some bootlegs too. Hard to pick a favorite but I like Altars, Blessed and Formulas the most. Illud Divinum Insanus at least had three good songs I liked on it. Apart from that one, I think Gateways was their weakest. Domination was weird, but in a good way.

Pretty funny that David Vincent's making country music now.

3 is a weird, obscure, one man band from Italy.

The Peel Sessions 1988-90 is worth finding too. I think Earache reissued it on vinyl a couple years ago.

I've only kept up with Obituary occasionally since Frozen in Time came out, but I did hear their new one. To me it sounds more like World Demise and Back From the Dead (which are fine albums IMO, aside from that fuckawful rap track at the end of Back...) except less focused and unmemorable. It's not bad, just kind of generic. Donald Tardy is still a beast.

Jim Jones and the Kool-Ade Kids - Trust Me from 1986. Good mix of crossover and doom. Reminds me of old Entombed in a way, and Slaughter from Canada.

Love Immortal, I've listened to I and Abbath's album had some good stuff on it. I liked that Armagedda was on I's Between Two Worlds--I really liked his drumming on Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism.

Hello, I just signed up today. Didn't want to make a new thread, so I posted here. I'm 30, been into metal since I was 13. My all time favorites are Megadeth, Slayer, Venom, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, Voivod and Mercyful Fate. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Pungent Stench, Enslaved, Krisiun, Immortal, Marduk,  Goatwhore, and finally got around to hearing Gorguts' Pleiades' Dust, to name a few.

Been a while since I posted on a forum. This one seems cool so I thought I'd try it out.
